NINTH GENERATION

260. Edward BOSWELL was born about 1750. He died in 1830 in Orange Co,NC.

261. ?CRAVEN? died prior 1820 in Orange Co,NC. Children were:

child i. Craven BOSWELL(35) was born on 12 Nov 1774 in Prince William Co,VA. He died on 3 Feb 1847 in Henderson Co,KY. Left North Carolina and came to Kentucky in 1805 and is said to have purchased 10,000 acres on the Green River. The town there is now known as Hebbardsville. He returned to North Carolina to marry Rebecca Windsor and then returned with her to Kentucky. He built several log cabins, hired a teacher for the children, in effect establishing a school. His slave labor began making the brick with which his son James H. Boswell built a house. When James died in 1850 the house passed on to his brother William and is still occupied today [1986] by William's grandson, James Cabble Boswell. There is a cemetery on the property where Craven and Rebecca are buried along with a number of members of their family.
child130 ii. John BOSWELL.
child iii. ?William? BOSWELL(35) was born about 1777 in Virginia. He died prior 1826? in ?Caswell Co, NC?. Per Pippenger & Boswell:
"We do not know the name of the father and mother of Brown BOSWELL. He and his wife must have died before 1820, leaving their son, Brown, to be raised by his grandfather Edward and his Aunt Charlotte. Researchers have believed his name might be William and that his wife's maiden name could have been BROWN, given the name chosen for their son, but this is only speculation."
child iv. Susannah "Sukey" BOSWELL(35) was born on 5 May 1778 in Prince William Co,VA. She died after 1850 in Missouri. Per Pippenger and Boswell:
"Susannah married Thomas LEACHMAN in 1798 and he died in 1816. Susannah is still in North Carolina in the 1820 census. Her son Littleton is in Monroe County, Georgia in 1830 and then we find Susannah with Littleton and John in Polk County, Missouri in 1850. Susannah's brother Matthew lived in St. Clair County, Missouri and he may have encouraged her family to come to that area."
child v. Thomas BOSWELL(35) was born on 27 Sep 1779 in Prince William Co,VA. He died on 6 Oct 1822 in Henderson Co,TN. Per Pippenger & Boswell:
"Thomas Boswell was born in Prince William County, Virginia. He was married to Mary Sims, daughter of Edward Sims in 1802 in Caswell County, NC. He bought 100 acres of land there from his father, Edward Boswell, in 1809.

He left North Carolina and travelled to Henderson County, Kentucky, where his brother Craven had settled. His daughter, Susannah, was born while they were there. The Chickasaw Cession with the Chickasaw Indians, signed in 1818, allowed settlers to legally settle in West Tennessee and spared them wars with the Indians. By 1819 and 1820 settlers were entering Henderson County area regularly. Thomas moved to Henderson County, Tennessee about 1820 and died thre in October of 1822. There were a number of other family members who came to Henderson County, Tennessee about this same time, possibly with Thomas and his family -- his brothers Matthew and Edward Boswell, his nephews Brown Boswell and James Iverson Boswell and most likely the GRAVES and FIELDER families.

Cumberland Presbyterians were the first to have ministers in Henderson County. The Methodist soon followed. Thomas' son, Craven Carlyle, became a Cumberland Presbyterian minister and his son, Thomas Leachman, became a Methodist minister.

After Thomas died, his wife Mary continued to live there and was listed with their son Edward and his wife, Barzilla, in the 1850 census. She moved to Madison County, Tennessee some time after this because that is where their three daughters had settled with their husbands. She died there in 1858."
child vi. Charlotte BOSWELL(35) was born about 1783 in Prince William Co,VA. She died after 1850 in Henderson Co,TN. Per Pippenger and Boswell:
"Charlotte is listed as Edward's daughter in his will in 1830 in Orange County, North Carolina. Apparently she never married. After Edward's death she went to live with her nephew, Brown Boswell, in Henderson County, Tennessee where we find her listed in the 1850 Census but not in the 1860 census. There have been attempts by researchers to list her as the mother of Brown Boswell, but we find no evidence of this."
child vii. ?Elizabeth? BOSWELL(35) was born about 1784 in Prince William Co,VA. She died prior 1826. Per Pippenger and Boswell:
"We are not sure of the name of this daughter of Edward's because she was apparently dead before his will was probated in 1830, but her husband and children are listed. Some researchers have suggested that she was named Elizabeth so we are using this as a working premise."
child viii. Edward BOSWELL(35) was born on 8 Jul 1786 in Prince William Co,VA. He died about 1840 in Henderson Co,TN. Per Pippenger and Boswell:
"Edward served in the War of 1812 and received his final settlement in May of 1815. His birthdate is one of the few legible in the Bible of his brother, Thomas Boswell. Edward is on the Henderson County, Kentucky Tax list in 1814, not in 1815 or 16, but again in 1817 and 1819. He is in Henderson County, Tennessee, along with Matthew, Mary the widow of Thomas, and a Joseph Boswell in the 1830 census. His wife Emily is along with the children in the 1840 census but since her youngest child was born about 1840, we assume that Edward died about 1840. There are several other very young children listed in the 1840 census which may or may not be sons and daughters of Edward and Emily."
child ix. Nancy BOSWELL(35) was born about 1790 in Prince William Co,VA. She died after 1842 in Orange Co,NC. Per Pippenger & Boswell:
"Nancy married John Bracken in 1816 in Orange County, NC and they had one child, Julia Ann. When John made his will, he believed that Nancy might be expecting another child, but only Julia Ann is mentioned in her grandfather Edward's will. John died in 1822 and Nancy married James Wilkerson in 1825. He had probably been married before also. Nancy was in ill health in 1842 according to a deed executed at that time. Nancy and James probably had children, but we do not have records to verify this at this time. It is thought that they both might have died around 1843."
child x. Matthew BOSWELL(35) was born in 1792 in Prince William Co,VA. He died on 13 May 1852 in Saint Clair Co,MO. Per Pippenger & Boswell:
"Matthew Boswell possibly left NC with his brother Thomas about 1818 and traveled first to Henderson Co, KY where he is shown on the tax rolls in 1819. They then journeyed on to Henderson Co, TN where Thomas died in 1822. Matthew was married here and his first four children were born here. Matthew and his family came to Henry County, MO (now St. Clair County) in 1837 in a caravan of wagons drawn by oxen. He homesteaded land on the Little Weaubleau Creek which is still owned and occupied by his great granddaughter, Lola Boswell."
child xi. Catherine "Kitty" BOSWELL(35) was born on 5 May 1797 in Prince William Co,VA. She died on 16 May 1892 in Alamance Co,NC. Per Pippenger & Boswell:
"Catherine married George Graham in 1818 and they lived in Orange Co, NC n that part which became Alamance County. They had at least one daughter, and possibly another child when in 1824 they had triplets - Martha, Eli Stockard and George William."
child xii. James BOSWELL(35) was born about 1798 in ?VA. He died in 1843 in ?NC. Per Pippenger & Boswell:
"James Boswell seems to have remained in Orange County, NC, but we have no records on him after 1839. It is not known for sure that he was the James that married Mary Merony in 1819, but he is known to have married Nancy Simpson. She is most likely the 'Aunt Nancy' referred to in a letter from John Boswell, brother of James, written to his daughter Lucinda in Texas in 1851. Her sister Catherine was John's wife."
