Biography

1862:

Edward was born on the 10 July 1862 at Solomons in High Halstow, Kent. He was the seventh child of Thomas and Mary Streatfield. Solomons is a farm, but on the birth certificate Thomas is listed as a farm labourer not as the farmer.

1863:

Agnes Ward Packman was born on the 09 January 1863 in Hernhill, Kent. Her father George Packman was a farm labourer. Her mother is listed on the birth certificate as Mary Ann Packman formerly Ward but no marriage between Mary Ann Ward and George Packman was found. In an effort to clarify the situation the birth certificates of several of Agnes’ siblings, identified from census data, were obtained. These all showed that Agnes’ mother was in fact born Mary Ann Smith. Ward was her own mother’s maiden name.

1871:

At the time of the census Edward (10) is living at 1 School Vicinity in Milsted, Kent with his parents (Piece RG10/981 Folio 126 Page 10 Schedule 47). His occupation is listed as scholar, so he receive some schooling. Similarly, Agnes (8) is living with her parents in Ville of Dunkirk, at Ellen Dene Farm House - possibly Ellenden Farm near Yorkletts on the modern OS map (Piece RG10/976 Folio 28 Page 12 Schedule 46).

1881:

The census shows Edward living with his parents at Bogs Hole Farm, Whitstable in Kent (Piece RG11/964 Folio 84 Page 10 Schedule 51). Edward’s occupation is listed as farmers son. Agnes was also living with her parents at the time of the census, but they are now living in the High Street at Seasalter (Piece RG11/965 Folio 56 Page 11 Schedule 61).

Edward and Agnes Ward were married on 08 October 1881 at the parish church in Whitstable, Kent after the saying of banns. They were married by the vicar, H.M. Maugham. The witnesses were William Streatfield and Martha Clark. All but Agnes signed their names, Agnes making her mark. Edward’s occupation is given as a farm labourer and his father Thomas’s occupation as farmer. Agnes’s father is listed as a labourer.

1891:

The census finds Edward and Agnes Ward living in the area of Wingham Well in Wingham, Kent (Piece RG 12/736 Folio 41 Page 6 Schedule 43). Edward is a general labourer. They have four children, daughters Agnes Annie (8) and Gilliah May (6) and sons Edward T (4) and George F (2). Only George was born in Wingham, the other children were all born in Whitstable, suggesting that the family moved sometime between 1887 - 1889.

1901:

Edward and Agnes have moved to Ickham School Lane in the parish of Ickham and Well (Piece RG13/791 Folio 88 Page 9 Schedule 68). The move seems to have occurred sometime between 1886 - 1889. Edward like his father has gone up in the world and is now a farm bailiff. Agnes, Thomas (probably Edward known by his middle name to prevent confusion with his father) and George are all still living at home, with Thomas working as a yard boy on a farm, probably dealing with the cattle. Five more children have been born. Three sons, Shurley (9), William (5) and Roberts (11 months) and two more daughters, Ethel (6) and Lena (3).

Three more children are born to the couple; Beatrice in 1902, Walter in 1903 and Sydney in 1905.

1911:

The family are still in Ickham School Lane, but some of the older children have now grown up and left home, which must have been a blessing in a house of just 5 rooms (RG78PN173 RD57 SD2 ED8 SN65). Edward is still working as a farm bailiff and must either be earning enough for Agnes not to have to work, or is too proud to list his wife’s occupation. William (15) is working as a farm labourer, but the other children are all at school. Still at home are Lena (13), Robert (11), Beatrice (8), Walter (7) and Sidney [sic] (5). The couple have been very lucky, as all their 12 children lived.

Oldest daughter Agnes Annie is living with her husband Stephen Andrews.

Sister Gillyah [sic] May is working as a parlour maid to Somerset Edward Pennefather, an elderly married clergyman from Dublin, living in St. Mary Abbott’s Vicarage, Vicarage Gate, Church Street in Kensington (RG78PN4 RD2 SD1 ED13 SN48). Gillyah is one of 5 servants.

Edward Thomas has been married a year and is living with his wife at 61 Grange Road in Margate (RG78PN185 RD63 SD2 ED7 SN247). He is working as a brewer’s drayman. The couple have no children.

Shirley is working as a footman at a place called Staffords in Dorchester, Dorset (RG14PN12396 RD264 SD2 ED8 SN3B). It must be a grand place as there are 10 servants in total and the owner, George Floyer?, is living on private means.

George Frederick and Ethel Florence have not yet been located in the census. George may well be at sea, since he enlisted in the navy on 7 July 1906.

1928:

Agnes died on 02 October 1928 at Cliffs End Farm, St. Lawrence near Ramsgate, Kent. Her age was given as 66 years and she is described as wife of Edward Streatfield, a market gardener. The death was reported by her son R. Streatfield (Roberts French), of 2 Grove Cottages, Cliffsend, Ramsgate. The cause of death was given as exhaustion and heart failure, combined with gastro intestinal influenza.

1930:

From Kelly’s Directory of Kent 1930:

1934:

Edward was admitted to the Thanet Institution in the parish of Minster on May 25th for treatment for rheumatism in both legs. At this time, prior to the introduction of the NHS, such institutes often provided healthcare to the local community. For some time after Agnes’ death he had been living with his married daughter, Ethel Florence Willis, at Ship Yard Cottages in Ash next Sandwich.

1937:

Edward died on the 16 February 1937 at Thanet Institution, his age was stated as 74. His occupation is listed as a retired farm bailiff. An inquest was held on the 17 February by the Coroner for Kent that returned a verdict of misadventure. The cause of death being given as heart failure due to the shock of falling out of bed on the 14 February, whilst suffering from acute influenza. The Register of Deaths of the Isle of Thanet Union shows that his body was ‘removed by friends’ on the 20th of February. Edward was buried at Minster on the same day.

The following funeral notice appeared in the ‘Kentish Express’:

The Funeral took place at Minster on Saturday of Mr. Edward Streatfield, 74, of Shipyard Cottages, a retired farm bailiff, who died on Feb. 15 following a fall from his bed. Mourners were Messrs. T., G., R. and S. Streatfield (sons), Mrs. H. Cork. Mrs. E. Willis. Mr. and Mrs. A. Baker. Mrs. E. Roast (daughters and son-in-law). Miss I. Willis (Grand-daughter). Flowers were from: Tom and Maude; May and Horace; Ethel, Jim and family; Bob and Louie; Beatrice and Ted; George and Alice; Brother Bill, Son and Daughter; Sister Emma; Kathy and Ted; Ivy; Nicholette; Betty; Edie and Harry.

The National Probate Calendar was checked for the years 1937 - 1941 but no grant of probate was found, suggesting that Edward died intestate.
