THE COUNTIES OF IRELAND


 
 

Ireland is divided into four Provinces - Ulster, Connaught, Munster and Leinster.  Each province is divided into counties and each county is divided into
Parishes which are civil  and ecclesiastical (local church administration) divisions.
Baronies divisions of land based on the Gaelic Clans and family holdings; and Unions comprising many townlands within an average of ten miles, with a large market town as centre.
Townlands being small divisions of land, within the parishes, with an average of 350 acres.


ULSTER - consists of the counties of Donegal, Londonderry, Antrim, Tyrone, Down, Fermanagh, Armagh, Monaghan, Cavan.

CONNAUGHT - includes the counties of Mayo, Sligo, Leitrum, Roscommon and Galway.

MUNSTER - covers the counites of Clare, Tipperary, Limerick, Kerry, Cork, and Waterford.

LEINSTER - consists of the counties of Longford, Westmeath, Meath, Louth, Offaly (Kings), Kildare, Dublin, Leix (Queens), Wicklow, Kilkenny,  Carlow and Wexford.
 
 

Below is a list of all the County's of Ireland - not all the county's have references to the Darmody or Dermody surname.   The different county pages also include links to relevant county information.

The Darmody and Dermody families are distributed throughout Ireland with the highest concentration being in Galway, Kilkenny and Tipperary.  There are also references to the name in Scotland and England included on the International Genelogical Index which are detailed on another page.

Using only  the Griffith's Valuation as the source, there were 265 family's with the surname of Darmody/Dermody/Durmody occupying land in Ireland, during the years that the valuation took place, which was between, 1848 and 1864.

The Griffith's Valuation was a Tax Valuation conducted in Ireland.  The Index only lists  the "Head of Household" Name, County, Parish and Townland.   The complete Griffith's Valuation will have a description of the house, land, any out-buildings, the landlord's name and the tax value of the property.

The surname DARMODY appears 99 times; DERMODY appears 165 times; and DURMODY only once.

The table above shows the highest concentation of the surname in County Kilkenny followed by Galway and Tipperary.

Click on county to view townland map.  It attempts to show the distribution of the different Darmody and Dermody familys.  I have coloured the different townlands, in greenand blue, to match the spelling of the surname, Darmody and Dermody, in the hope of making it easier to see how the different family's may have dispersed.   Where there is two different spellings for one townland, the two colours have been used.
