In the year, 1744, John Penn, Thomas Penn, and Richard Penn, Esquires, were the true and absolute proprietors and governers-in-chief of the province of Pennsylvania and the Counties of New Castle, Kent and Sussex on the Delaware.  In pursuance and by virtue of a warrant under seal of their land office, bearing date twenty-seventh day of April, there was surveyed and laid out unto Jacob Kline, Lawrence Hoff, Conrad Glassbrenner and Alexander Zartman all of the county of Lancaster for the use of the Lutheran congregation in Warwick township, within the said county, a certain tract of land situate within the said township of Warwick, bounded and described as follows, viz, * * * * containing twenty-nine acres.
    The parties already named, members of the congregation and trustees for the same applied for a confirmation of the said tract of land for the use aforesaid.  The twenty-nine acres were given, granted, released and confirmed to the said trustees and George Thomas Lieutenant Governor of the Province,
set his hand to and caused the great seal of the said province to be attached to the deed, May 10, 1744.
    In the following year on February 24th, the Lutheran congregation, at a meeting held at the church, unanimously resolved and agreed to change the said trustees and the said Jacob Kline, Lawrence Hoff, Conrad Glassbrenner and Alexander Zartman agreed and consented to convey and make over all their estate, right, title, trust and interest in the said tract of land and premises unto Martin Wydeman, George Albert, Leonhard Mueller and David Behler being the new trustees chosen and elected by the said Lutheran congregation at their said cemetery.
    The cemetery situated with this tract, is almost square, containing about 3 acres, and is still under the control of the trustees of the Lutheran Church.
    The cemetery has probably been used by the people of the neighborhood for the burial of their dead from the time that the church was established which was in the year 1730, and from a private record of Leonhard Miller, we note that a churchbuilding was erected in 1733, which stood about 200 yards southwest of the present church building, and tradition has it that the first building was used as a hospital during the Revolutionary war.
    During the year 1819, the burial ground was enclosed by a stone wall at considerable expense of which only the wall along the Horseshoe turnpike, the wall along the western boundary was removed about seventeen years ago, some of the stones being used to wall the cellar of the Lexington hotel.
    The graves are in rows and most of the early ones are marked with undressed and unlettered sandstones placed at the head and foot ends.  These, of course cannot be identified.  There are however a number having headstones with inscriptions mostly all the early ones are sand stones much worn by time, the lettering in most cases being almost effaced, it is therefore for preservation that I make a list of all persons buried, that were born prior to 1800.

    Here rests Elizabeth whose lifeless body is committed to the earth until Jehova calls her to another life.  God has already freed the soul in love and wounds of Jesus from the fetters and thralldom of sin.  This is the tribute which posterity pays her memory.

    This record of the Old Cemetery at Brickerville was typed from microfilm copies of the "Ephrata Review".   Some of the print was extremely hard to read.  Please keep this in mind.   It was my intent to make this available as an aid for research.  I do not guarentee an exact copy.  Further research can be done at the Ephrata Historical Society.  There have the microfilm.
