Herman Hoffman

Herman Hoffman was born on September 10, 1837 in Prussia. He came to the US in 1861 at the age of 24. He was a farmer and of the German Methodist faith. In 1867, Herman married Augusta Schultz who had come to America in 1866.

1870 Federal Census lists Herman(37), wife Augusta(30), and daughter Emma(6) all born in Prussia. Sons Albert(3) and August(1) were born in Wisconsin. Herman and family are living in Stettin, Marathon, WI and farming.

In the 1880 Federal Census, Herman and family are now living in Rib Falls/Wein, Marathon, Wisconsin. By 1880, Herman and Augusta have given birth to Ida (1873) and son Rudolf (abt 1875). Augusta's father John Schultz is also living with them in Rib Falls.

In the 1900 Federal Census lists Herman(62) and Augusta(57) living with son August. By 1900, Augusta has given birth to 10 children and only 5 have survived. It is interesting that Herman and Augusta have listed different immigration dates. Could either be an error or Augusta remained in Prussia for 5 years. Emma was born in Prussia around 1864 so that further clouds the issue.

Augusta passed away on Oct 25, 1900. At the time of her death, Herman moved in with this son Albert and his family in Rib Falls, Marathon, Wisconsin. (1910 Federal Census) August's wife passed away in 1910 and it appears that Herman moved in with August's family to help with the care of his three grandchildren. (1910 Federal Census) Herman passed away on Feb 2, 1920 in Rib Falls and was laid to rest in Rib Falls Cemetery, WI.
