Gene Harlan Church (Includes photo)
(September 21, 1924 - September 3, 2011)
Gene Harlan Church, 86, of Crab Orchard, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 3, 2011, at the Bowers Hospice House, in Beckley, WV, following a short illness.
Born on September 21, 1924, in Ashland, WV, in McDowell County, Gene was the son of late Harrison "Harry" Church and Julia Haire Church.
Gene was also preceded in death by his devoted wife of 54 years, Macie Shrewsbury Church. Gene and Macie were married on September 17, 1948; this year they will be able to spend their anniversary together again in Heaven. Gene was also preceded in death by 3 brothers-in-law, Paul Cook, Williard "Hatch" Hatcher, and Arnold Reed.
Gene grew up in Sophia, WV. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II as an Artillery Sergeant.
After World War II, Gene attended Louisiana State University and National Business College in Roanoke, VA, where he received his Bachelor's degree in Accounting. After receiving his degree, Gene worked at Tams Coal Company as the accountant for 10 years. Gene then decided to open his own business and specialize in taxes and book keeping. He opened Gene Church and Associates in 1961, and his last day of work was January 7, 2011. Gene loved going to work and often referred to his clients as "friends first, clients second." Gene served as President of the Raleigh County Building Commission from 1991 until present. He was the Raleigh County Airport Accountant for at least 10 years. He was also a Charter Member of the Lions Club in Crab Orchard, WV. Gene was a true businessman, and the only things he loved more than that were his family, his two cats: Simon and Mia, and telling stories about World War II and France.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Harry Church and his wife Jana of Beckley, WV, Steve Church and his wife Judie of Beckley, WV, Anita Church Wood Adams of Crab Orchard, WV, and Joe Church. Grandchildren include Stephen Church II and his wife Erika of Winston-Salem, NC, Matt Church and his wife Sheri of Kernersville, NC, and his "doll" Julia Wood of Crab Orchard, WV. 2 Stepgranddaughters Jessica Turner Jones of Richmond, VA, and Emily Turner of Beckley, WV. 2 Great-Grandsons Eric Church and Carson Church. 3 sisters June Church Reed Hatcher of Edgewater, FL, Peggy Church Cook of Grandview, WV, and Connie Church Shumate and husband J. C. Shumate of Coal City, WV. Gene is also dearly loved by nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. As well as extended family Marlene Church, Sharon Lou Church, and James "Woody" Wood. Gene will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Funeral Services will be conducted by Gene's friends at Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel in Beckley, WV, on Friday, September 9, 2011, at 1 p. m. with Rev. Phillip Farrington officiating, with a eulogy by Danny Reed. Entombment will follow at the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in the Peace Chapel in Prosperity, WV. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post 3110 Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be nephews. Visitation will be Thursday, September 8, 2011, from 5 to 9 at the Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Gene Church's memory to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, WV 25801.
A special thanks to the Nurses and Staff at the Bowers Hospice House, as well as the CCU Nurses and Doctors at Raleigh General Hospital, and Niece, Paulette Cook, for all the hours she spent with her beloved Uncle. Online condolences may be sent to our guestbook at www. roseandquesenberry. net. Arrangements are by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, 1901 S. Kanawha St., Beckley, WV.
