James Richard Atkinson Sr., 79, a longtime resident of North Platte, passed away at home in February 2015.
Jim was born on March 15, 1935, in Houston, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest child of Charles and Rowene (Fife) Atkinson. Jim grew up in Houston and graduated from Chartiers-Houston High School in 1953. He then joined the U.S. Army, serving most of his term of duty in occupied Japan.
Following his discharge in 1956, Jim moved to Painesville, Ohio, and worked for Western Union for over 25 years.
On April 20, 1957, Jim married Anna Tolbert in Ruff Creek, Pennsylvania, and they later divorced.
Jim married Linda Bringewatt on June 27, 1971, in North Platte, where they made their home. Linda passed away on Nov. 14, 1989. After an early retirement, Jim drove a truck for many years and most recently worked as a mechanic for Bob Spady Buick-GMC.
Jim was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 551, American Legion Post No. 181, VFW Post No. 1504 and F.O. Eagles No. 2839. He was also a life member of the Nebraska AmVets. He will be greatly missed by his many friends at the Moose Lodge and the VFW in North Platte.
Along with his wife, Linda, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, David; and parents, Charles and Rowene.
Jim is survived by his four children, Cheryl Cherie (John) Clark, of Morrisville, North Carolina, Rhonda (Bruce) Winn, of McCool Junction, James Richard Rick Atkinson Jr., of Painesville, Ohio, and William Henry Willie Atkinson, of Nickerson, Kansas; four grandchildren, Damon (Shelby) Winn, Shelby Winn, Dustin Pinneke and Brody Atkinson; a great-granddaughter, Madilynn Winn; three sisters, Elizabeth Anderson, of Buena Vista, Colorado, Louise Carroll, of Mason, Ohio, and Charlotte Fritz, of Campbell, California; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family.
A memorial has been established. Online condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 6, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore. The casket will be closed. Burial with military honors will follow at Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Memorial book signing will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements.

From her Obit:
She took a deep interest in public affairs and was progressive in her convictions. For a number of years she had been an ardent advocate of suffrage for women. She was a forceful speaker and was always active in church and community meetings until in her later years when her advanced age made if necessary for her to lead a more retired life.
