8.1 Sarah MICHELMORE ( Mary Ann , William (4) , William (3) , John (5), Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was christened on 14 Dec 1834 in Churchstow and died in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, in 1906.
Sarah was illegitimate. Her mother married when she was 3 years old and it appears she was then brought up by her grandfather William (4). After she left home, she worked as a servant in Loddiswell and Stoke Fleming, Devon, until her marriage. She then seems to have lived with her husband in Prestleigh, near Shepton Mallet, Somerset, for the rest of her life. In 1901, she was recorded as a shopkeeper living next door to her daughter Elizabeth and her family.
Sarah married thatcher Luke MARKS in 1865 in Sherbourne, Dorset. Luke was born about 1820 in Sandford Orcas, Somerset, and died in Shepton Mallet in 1900.
Sarah and Luke had the following children.

John appears to have worked on his father's farm until he married, after which he became a rather itinerant gardener. He was living with his family in Above Town, Dartmouth in 1881, at 5 Adas Crescent, Morthoe [near Ilfracombe] in 1891 and in Dunchideock [near Exeter] in 1901. His children's birth places indicate that the family also lived in Halwell in 1881, in Bridgewater in 1886 and in Landkey [near Barnstaple] in 1891.
John married Maria Stammers CROCKER. Maria was born in about 1848 in Totnes. She had married Joseph Stephen HORSWILL in 1872, but he died in 1877. Maria died in the Tiverton district in 1909.
Maria was keeping a lodging house in Dartmouth in 1881 and in Morthoe in 1891.

8.15 William Henry (1) MITCHIMORE ( John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5), Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was christened on 18 May 1834 in Dartmouth. Known locally as "Butcher Bill", he died on 10 Mar 1881 in Dartmouth and was buried on 16 Mar 1881 in the Dartmouth suburb of Townstal.
Bill was initially
apprenticed to farmer William FEAL in the nearby village of Street,
Devon, but by 1856 was a butcher and had set up
a business at his residence, 23 Lower Street, Dartmouth, which he
continued to the end of his life. Later, he also took up farming again.
In 1872, Bill was
involved in three court cases. Two involved trespassing on Brownston Estate,
Kingswear, where he (and his aunt Mary) were tenants, and one involved his "savage dog loose and unmuzzled".
He lost all three cases.
His will shows that Bill died a rich man. By 1881 he owned "The Island" at Bayard's Cove, two houses in Newcomin Road, two houses in Carlton Terrace, fields and a slaughterhouse at Batts Park, fields and premises at Ridges, and three boats—an estate valued at £8000 (the equivalent of nearly £5 million today). He was obviously well respected in Dartmouth. A notice in the Dartmouth Chronicle of 11 March 1881 commented, "Perhaps a brighter example of what perseverance, tact, and general aptitude for business, can achieve, was never known, and his career should be a stirring example to the rising generation, of what is possible to be achieved”. The following week, the Chronicle reported that “his funeral cortege comprised seven carriages and was followed by above 100 of the principal inhabitants of the town and neighbourhood, nearly every shop on the route from Lower Street to Townstall cemetery being partially closed.”
William married (1) Sophia EASTMAN, daughter of Totnes butcher William EASTMAN, on 23 Sep 1856 at Bridgetown, Totnes. Sophia was born in Totnes and christened there on 10 Nov 1833; she died on 24 Feb 1858 in Dartmouth.
William and Sophia had the following child.

Charles John MITCHELMORE, who was born on 3 Dec 1866 in Dartmouth and christened at Dartmouth St Petrox on Christmas Day 1866, became a farmer and horse dealer. In 1891 and 1901, he was living with his mother and her brother at 2 Carlton Terrace, Dartmouth; in 1911 he was boarding at Dartview Terrace, Dartmouth. He is said to have owned a farm at Blackdown (presumably bought with the 200 pounds he inherited from his father on reaching the age of 21) and to have supplied horses to the Bristol Fire Brigade. He made a journey to Canada and the USA in 1912, presumably to buy or sell horses. In 1921 he travelled on the Saxon to Cape Town, South Africa, indicating that he intended to settle there. |

8.18 Nathaniel MICHAMORE ( John (2) , John (3) , John (4) , John (5), Peter (1) , Peter (2) , Henry ) was born on 9 Jun 1839 in Dartmouth and christened on 23 Jun 1839 at Dartmouth St Saviour. He died in Dartmouth on 3 Apr 1897.
Nathaniel founded a painting business which was to extend over the next two generations. He was first recorded as a painter in 1861 when he was resident in St Helier, Jersey. By 1862, he had returned to Dartmouth. He lived in South Street, Torquay, for a time, and in 1871 was resident at Little Picton Place, Littleham, Devon (near Exmouth).
Nathaniel had returned once again to his place of birth by 1873. Advertisements for "Nathaniel Mitchelmore, House Decorator, Lower Street" first appeared in a Dartmouth trade directory in 1878. By 1890, his son Charles had entered the business so that its name had become "Nathaniel Mitchelmore & Son". A weekly advertisement appeared in the Dartmouth Chronicle. The business premises in Lower Street had a shop front as well as a workshop and accommodation for the family.
In his will, Nathaniel left his business and stock in trade to his widow Elizabeth and his sons Charles and Ernest. The two sons set up separate painting businesses: Ernest in Lower Street (possibly in his father's house) and Charles in Newcomin Road. Elizabeth appears to have sold her interest and bought a house and shop in Hanover Square.
Nathaniel married Elizabeth HOLE on 17 Apr 1862 in Townstal, Dartmouth. Elizabeth was born about 1836 in Tormoham [Torquay], Devon, daughter of brewer and innkeeper John HOLE and his wife Elizabeth née GRUIT, and died on 26 Dec 1899 in Dartmouth.
Various census entries put her birth in 1833-1839, but no record of her birth or christening has yet been found.
In her will, she left her house and shop in Hanover Square to her daughter Emily, who herself died two years later.
Nathaniel and Elizabeth had the following children.
