Daniel Higgins joined for duty and enrolled at Jefferson City, Kentucky
on October 11, 1861 at the age of 29 in Captain Stephen's Company,
Battalion, Kentucky Mounted Volunteers*, He was mustered in as a Private
on December 23, 1861 for 3 years or war. On a roll ending February 22,
1862 he is listed as absent sick. On a roll dated August 31, 1862 he is
absent sick at Cumberland Gap, Kentucky. Same through Jan/Feb 1863 roll.
Again on April 17, 1863 roll. Also on June roll. Deserted from hospital
at Louisville, Kentucky on or about July 1, 1863. Another page gives
October 20, 1862 as date of desertion.
This organization subsequently
became Company "A" 6th Kentucky Cavalry.

admitted to Brown General Hospital, Louisville, Ky, May 3,1864, with
Varioloid* (Vaccinated) and transferred May 5, 1864; was admitted to
Eruptive General Hospital, Louisville, Ky. with Smallpox and returned to
duty September 17, 1864.Arrived at Louisville Barracks September 17,
1864 and sent to Nashville (Tn) September 19, 1864,he arrived at Camp
Webster, at Nashville Tn, March 17, 1865. No disposition given.
Another note dated June 17, 1884 states; Application for removal of
charge of desertion has been denied.

August 17, 1861 at Louisville, Kentucky for 3 years service. On Aug to
Dec 1862 muster roll states he is absent at hospital at Louisville,
Kentucky. On muster roll ending Feb 28, 1863 states he deserted from
Camp Chase at Louisville, Kentucky on Jan 23, 1863. On May/Jun 1863
muster roll states he is under arrest and awaiting trial. Returned June
14, 1863.. Acquitted of the charge of desertion and returned to duty by
competent authority on August 10, 1863. Discharged on February 11, 1864
at Rossville, Georgia by virtue of re-enlistment, Re-inlisted on
February 12, 1864 in Veteran Reserve Corp. Absent sick in hospital at
Chattanooga, Tennessee since May 18, 1864. On muster roll ending August
31, 1864 it states he is absent sick in hospital at Nashville,
Tennessee. On muster roll ending December 31, 1864 it states he is sick
in hospital at Louisville, Kentucky. On May/Jun 1865 roll he is present
with company. Present with Company until November 11, 1865 when he
accidentally drowned at Lavaca Bay, Texas. Within his file exist a
letter dated May 21, 1865 from the surgeon at Crittenden General
Hospital at Louisville Ky stating he is a "drunken & disorderly
character" that abuses the citizens when drunk. Personal Information:
Born Ireland, a farmer by occupation, 5 ft 9 3/4 in tall, Fair
complexion, Blue eyes, Brown hair.

age 37 as a private in Captain Kelley's Company*, 19th Kentucky Infantry
on October 7, 1861 for 3 years service. Was on furlough from July 31,
1863.
On Sept/Oct 1863 roll it is noted that he overstayed his leave of
absence, sentenced by regimental court martial. Held by feild officers.
Has to forfeit $5.00 of his pay. Sentence approved by Brigade Commander.
Mustered out January 26, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.

Company "A" , 1st regiment Ky Volunteers* at Camp Holt for 3 years
service.
Reported for duty and enrolled August 18, 1861 at Jeffersonville,
Indiana.
Appears as sergeant on most 1861 muster rolls.
Absent sick at home at Bardstown, Ky December 1862.January 1863 absent,
wounded, in hospital at Louisville, Ky.
Promoted to 2nd Lt. of Company "D" August 15, 1862 from Orderly Sergeant
of Company "A" ,Takes a leave of absence to visit dying uncle on or
about January 19,1864. Promoted to 1st Lt and transferred to Company "B"
February 7, 1863. According to his file, he was 19 when he took the
promotion to 1st Lt. March 1864 - absent - Escort for General Howard of
11 Corps. Resigned April 12, 1864 (special field order 103,DC) Absent on
furlough from January 25,1864 to February 18,1864.(special order 23,1864
DC). Not borne on Muster Out roll of Company.
Personal Information: Age 19,5 Ft 7 In Tall, Brown Complexion, Blue Eyes,
Brown Hair, Born in Ireland, by occupation a Shoemaker.

invalid's pension May 15,1886 for his service in Company "C" 1st Louisiana Cavalry. His wife Annie
Higgins received a widows pension September 22,1897.
Hugh Higgins appears on 1890 Veterans Census Schedule for New Orleans, Orleans County, Louisiana and refers to
his service as noted above.
