Query: Looking for any info on Higgins families from the Maryland counties of Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne's, Talbot, Caroline, or Dorchester. My own line is from Daniel Higgins (1801/06-1877) married Mary Matilda Furniss, 1856.
There is also a copy at my website where I am making a list of any Higgins references from the eastern shore of Maryland.

My name is Alexander M. Higgins
My father is Alexander R. Higgins, and his father is Robert Higgins from Colorado. After that my there is a huge gap in the family lineage. I know that we wear the tartan's of the O'Neill and MacNeill clans. The O'Neill tartan is getting harder and harder to purchase. So we mainly wear the MacNeill tartan. Which tartan, if any, do you wear and why?
 I
have traced our families alliances back to these two clans. I know our family does not have colors of our own. Just curious as to if you have found anything out about this matter. I also have a brother Elton M Higgins

Edwin Higgins was the brother of my great-great
grandmother Sarah Higgins. He was born in
Constantine Michigan in 1844. He enlisted as a
bugler boy at age 17, in a Michigan civil war
regiment. He was badly wounded early in the war and
recuperated in Washington where he met up with a
Randall relative who got him a civil service job.
By the age of 24, he was "the boy governor"
(interim) of the territory of Utah. His career had
its up and downs but he was by and large a
successful businessman and lawyer and is buried in
Arlington National cemetery. He died in 1906.

Some of his descendants may be traced out on the
ancestry site by searching on Edwin Higgins and
there are a number of stories about him in the
 Washington Post of the era.

His father was David Higgins and his mother Mary
 Randall
. Some say that David Higgins was born in
Ashburnham Massachusetts but I have been unable to
verify this. Mary Randall and David Higgins were
married in 1828 in Williston Vermont, and trekked
west to Michigan in the 1830's.

No one seems to know anything about David Higgins
parents, etc. Does this line ring a bell with  anyone?

Sarah Higgins, my g-g-grandmother, married Edward Pierce and had one son, William Henry Pierce. She died in 1911.

I came across your wonderful site just yesterday,
and have finally found some wonderful sources to
trace my grandfather, but I think I'm stuck and
could use a bit of your expertise. I'm beginning to
discover that there were a lot of ''untold'' stories
in my father's family, thus explaining my wild goose chase.

I'd known that my grandfather was buried in Saco,
Maine - I'd even visited the grave when I was much
younger, and knew that he was buried with my
father's mother, Grace, and that his year of death
was 1957. Interestingly, I learned from the
 secretary at the cemetery that he was a ''Senior'';
something I'd never known because my father had
never used the title ''Junior''. While the
secretary was more than happy to give me his exact
date of birth, all she would give me was the year my
grandmother died (1941)...no maiden name. Dead
 end...she was from Scotland.

I sourced the Net, came up with your site and a few
other good ones, but NONE of them have any record of
Ernest E(lmer) Higgins who died in Saco, Maine on
12/18/1957 (it reads this way on the
headstone)...till I hit your site. Hitting a link
to Massachusetts, I found an Elmer E. Higgins from
Saco, Maine who married a Marie A. Pyer of
Biddeford, Maine on 2/3/1945! This woman was never
mentioned in my father's house that I can ever
recall. This, however, places me in a dilemma: I
am desperately trying to find a death record for
either him or for Grace, or a marriage record for
them...but that's the only thing I can find.

I've accessed the Maine State Archives, the SSDI,
the LDS, and have checked under all the possible
name combinations I can think of, but there seems to
be no recording of my grandmother Grace's death. (I
know she died of leukemia at the age of 41.) I
urgently need to prove my grandparents' countries of
birth, and have NO idea where to go from here. (I
was told years ago that my grandfather was from
Ireland, but it escapes me as to what county.)
It's clear to me that you've been at this for a long
time, and I'm hoping that you have a direction to
send me in. I have a strong feeling that its a very
simple thing I'm overlooking...can you help?

 Thanks in advance.

My great grandfather's sister (Bridget ROACH HIGGINS)
b.1845 d.1875 came from Mayo Co, Ireland to the USA
in 1866. She married Patrick C. Higgins of Roscommon,
IRE in Dane County, WI. Patrick was a carpenter and
moved his family to Savanna, Carroll Co, IL before or
about 1870. After his wife's death he moved to
Chicago with one of his brothers. Later, he moved
back to Madison, WI

Patrick came to the USA in 1851 with his parents:
Martin J. Higgins and Bridget Veseay/Vesey Higgins,
his brother Bernard aka Byron, and several other
siblings. Bernard died during renovations of the
Madison, WI State Capitol Bldg, which was witnessed
by the young Frank Lloyd Wright.

Patrick and Bridget were the grandparents of John
Martin Higgins, the rear Adm. I have more info on
this family, if you are interested.
John Martin's parents were James Martin Higgins and
Phoebe Harrington. They lived in Madison, WI.

My older relatives tell me we are related to the
Patrick Higgins who is buried in the Red Oak, IA
cemetery. It happens to be the same place where my
great grandfather, James Roach is buried. I do not
live very far from Red Oak, IA....and from reading
your notes it appears you too are related to him as
well. My great grandfather farmed in and around Red
Oak, IA...he had 13 children.

Anyhow, I have pictures, grave rubbings, census
records and even some old photos to verify this data.
Would sure like to be able to connect to anyone else
who has similar information. And compare notes with
you. Perhaps even get more info on your Patrick
Higgins
and my other Patrick Higgins.

Thanks!

My ancestor Catharine Higgins (dob abt 1846) is from Clay County N.C. She married John F. Dale and they had 19 children 16 of which lived to adulthood. I'm trying to identify her parents. Looking for Higgins Family information

I have been trying to find the parentage and siblings (if any) of my great  great grandmother Lula Elizabeth Higgins Banks.
This is what I know about her:
She married my great great grandfather James Marion  Banks on Jan. 4, 1876.  James Marion Banks was born Aug.31, 1853 in Alabama and can be found listed as living with his mother Frances Salina Jones Banks
on the 1860 and 1870 censuses of Chambers County Alabama.
For this reason I am assuming he and Lula Elizabeth may have married in Chambers county.
I have found records of Higgins in Chambers county Alabama, but do not have  a name of her mother or father so cannot make a  connection with any names I have found. I also know there is a Higgins cemetery  in Chambers county but  it has not as yet been transcribed for the web.
Lula Elizabeth and James Marion had the following children:
Walter Palmer Banks b: 13 MAY 1879 in Tennessee
 Willie Banks b: 13 MAY 1879
Ella Arizona Banks b: June 1881

Willie and Walter were twins. Willie died at birth.
Ella Arizona was my great grandmother and married George Thomas Stevenson in Texas.
Lula Elizabeth died when Ella was about four years old and James Marion moved the family to Texas where he remarried.
I would like to find the family of Lula Elizabeth  and where she is buried.
Just checking to see if you have any information on this family.
 Thank you for your time

My great grandmother, Bridget Devaney Mitchell's mother Mary Higgins Devaney was born somewhere in Ireland. Mary Higgins married James Devaney and they are in the 1881 Preston, England census.
They later immigrated to Fall River Massachusetts. Bridget Devaney married Frank Mitchell in Fall River on Dec. 31, 1885. I would appreciate discovering which one of these Mary Higgins is related to me. If you could help I would appreciate it. Thank you so much.

24 Sep 2004
My name is Ron Tarburton---I am historian of the First State Medal of Honor Roundtable and I am looking for info on a very special but presently obscure fellow.
He was a First Class Fireman aboard Picket Launch No 1 when it destroyed the Rebel ram Albemarle at her dock in Plymouth North Carolina, Oct. 1864. He was the senior rated enlisted man aboard and all the other enlisted men received for their heroism that fateful night the thanks of a grateful nation in the form of the Congressional Medal of Honor.
For some unknown reason, even though Samuel Higgins lost his life on that mission he never received the Medal of Honor. I believe that he didn't because of some error or perhaps because the US Navy only awarded One and only one posthumous Medal of Honor during the entire  Civil War. I am trying to track down the family of this man in the hope I might therefore identify him and determine where he came from. I know that he was familiar with steam engines and had worked himself to very nearly an engineer's rating at the time of his death. That takes years at sea and lot of proven experience.
It is just a hunch but I learned that a Samuel Higgins signed aboard the CS Sumter under Rapahael Semmes, a rebel raider in 1861 as a coal hear (stoker in the engine room) He signed aboard at New Orleans Louisiana shortly before the ship sailed. Most of the crew was left ashore after being paid in Gibraltar quite a while later in the war. Thought this might be the same man and later he joined the US Navy, being experienced with steam and quickly working his way up the ranks.
Also have learned that a Edward Higgins was mariner and former US Navy officer, operating out of Louisiana and after this Samuel Higgins was born in 1842, when Edward was 21, Edward was still in the US Navy but in his early manhood this Edward was operating mail steamers between New Orleans and New York.
Then a Samuel Higgins joins the same artillery unit that is led in part by Edward Higgins, there in La. at the start of the war.
About this same time a Samuel Higgins signs aboard the CS Sumter and sets off to war shortly thereafter.
There are variations and questions here but just playing a hunch.
Could you find if Edward Higgins---born VA 1821 Died San Francisco 1875 had a child named Samuel who was in the Confederate Navy. I really do believe that through some grievous error Fireman First Class Samuel Higgins, believed buried at Plymouth North Carolina, was wrongly denied the Medal of Honor and I will do all I can to correct this error, if I find that it has in fact taken place. But to do that I have to find his roots, his family and then his present day Congressman. After that we can start working on justice for this long forgotten hero that should never have been overlooked.
I sincerely hope you or someone can help
me. Ron Tarburton

PS Reference to this man and his death can be found online via the Official Records of the
Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion Cornell University. Use that search criteria and then so site search using name Samuel Higgins and you will find the date and place of both his death and burial. He died one of the most gallant fighting men of the
Civil War but never received anything for his heroism. RT

Reference to the ramming of the Abermarle, but not mentioning Samuel Higgins

Title: Official records of the Union and Confederate Navies in the War of the Rebellion. / Series I -
Volume 10: North Atlantic Blockading Squadron (May 6,1864 - October 27, 1864)

Report of Captain Smith, U. S. Navy, regarding a boat
expedition from the U. S. S. Wyalusing for the purpose of destroying
the C. S. S. Albemarie.

U. S. S. MATTABESETT,
Albemarle Sound, North Carolina, May 30, 1864.
SIR: I have to report that an effort was made on the 25th instant at 11 o'clock by five volunteers from the steamer
Wyalusing to destroy the ironclad Albemarle.
Tue party left at 2 o'clock p. m. of the 25th (having made a reconnaissance two days before) and ascended the Middle River in the Mattabesett's dingy with two
torpedoes, each containing 100 pounds of powder and their appendages, which they transported on a stretcher across the island swamp. Charles Baldwin, coal heaver, and John W. Lloyd, coxswain, then swam the Roanoke River with a line and hauled the torpedoes over to the 1~lymouth shore above the town. They were then connected by a bridle, floated down with the current, and guided by Charles Baldwin, who designed to place them across the bows of the rain, one on either side, and Alexander Crawford, who was stationed oii the opposite side of the river in the swamp, was to explode them upon a given signal. Everything had worked favorably from the time of starting until the torpedoes were within a few yards of the ram, when Baldwin was discovered and hailed by a sentry on the
wharf. Two shots were then fired and a volley of musketry followed, which induced John W. Lloyd, who heard the challenge and report of small arms, to cut the guiding line, throw away the coil, and swim the river again to join John Laverty, who was left in charge of his clothes and arms. These two men, with the boat keeper, Benjamin Lloyd, returned to the ship the morning of the 27th, after an absence of thirty-eight hours in the swamp, encountering the additional discomfort of a rainy day and night. Two days' unsuccessful search was made for Baldwin and Crawford, both of whom made their appearance on
Sunday, time 29th instant, much fatigued by travel and somewhat exhausted from the
loss of food. No traces of their intended designs were left behind them.
I can not too highly commend this party for their courage, zeal, and unwearied exertion in carrying out a project that had for sometime been & consideration. The plan of executing it was their own, excellent in some minor details, and although defeated in their purpose
(by accidentally fouling a schooner), I deem it my imperative duty to recommend that Alexander Crawford, fireman, and Charles Baldwin, coal heaver, be promoted to a higher grade, and that all receive the pecuniary reward awarded by act of Congress for distinguished services. Four deserters from the rebel ram Albemarle were brought off by the Picket boat yesterday, but can not, without detaining the army boat, communicate the
intelligence they bring. They state, however, that the Neuse is afloat and in all respects ready for service. Very respectfully, your obedient servant,
MELANCTON SMITH,
Captain and Senior Officer in Sounds of North Carolina.
Acting Rear-Admiral S. P. LEE, Commanding North Atlantic Blockading Squadron.

From County Monaghan, Ireland

My great greatgrandfather was James Edward Higgins b. 1828 County Monaghan according to his tombstone at Holy Cross in Farrar (Story County) Iowa. He married Lydia Mathis, who is buried at Keller Cemetery Elkhart (Polk County) Iowa -- I was always fascinated they were buried separately because he was Catholic and she was not. I have a lot of Mathis genealogy info and contacts but not one scrap of info on GG Grandpa Higgins. A lot of relatives in northern Polk County & Story County Iowa were from Ohio via Indiana, and Kentucky -- would love to find out how James Higgins got here. Great website! Good hunting & God bless!

Sandy, Utah

My grandmother Anne Helen Higgins was born in Sandy, Utah in 1904.
Her parents were Lawrence Higgins and Margaret Helen O'Brien. Supposedly parents died and Anne was taken back to NY/NJ by Aunt Catherine [O'Brien] VanAuken when she was three. Can't find any info on Lawrence except he was born in the USA. Margaret came from Ireland.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Higgins researchers:

I am searching for a James W. Higgins whose address  in 1953 was 2826 N. Lambert St., Philadelphia, PA.  Jim is an Officer Candidate School (OCS) classmate  of mine. We graduated from US Army OCS at Ft. Sill Oklahoma on May 19, 1953. My classmates and I are  in the process of searching for all members of Class #37. The Lambert Street address was used by Jim in our graduation book. So far we have not been able to track down Jim.

If you have any information concerning the J. W.  Higgins I have described I would appreciate having it.

Thank you in advance for any information or hints you may be able to provide.

This is an excellent site. It is great to read about the Higgins generation. Just wish I could find a missing link to mine. I have James Knox Polk Higgins, 2nd going back to James K P Higgins, Sr. belief: b. 1804 - 1808. I can find him in the census 1830 - 1860. Can't find his parents or proof of birth, siblings or anything except he married Nancy Jane Hensley, daughter of Larkin B Hensley from VA. living in TN at that time. My guess is they married around 1830. They were found living in Hickman Co., TN 1830 census. First child Elizabeth J was born 1832 in Coles/Clark Co. IL as were the next four. Last Nancy A was born January 22, 1850 in Lewis Co., TN. It is like he did not exist until then 1830. I received information he is most likely son of Samuel, or Richard. Also the son of James Higgins and Catherine Van Pelt. I am lost in a round Higgins room with no way out. My out would be 1806 back through the 1700's. I would appreciate any help I can get. I am proud to be of the Higgins family. My mother was a Higgins. Starting with my grandchildren going back to James K P Higgins, Sr. takes them 8 generations. I have always believed I was a Scottish descendent, as my name is, Alva. My husband is Scottish. I have gone to the Borough of Alva Scotland, where my husbands mother is buried. I think it is a great help for the Higgins families to have this site. I will be checking in often. Thank you for your work and help through this site. Alva

Please see Inquirer's Notes for what is believed to be the parents of James Knox Polk Higgins.

Harris (Harrison) Higgins

I am looking for any additional information on Harris (Harrison) Higgins b. 1809 in New York State. Harris Higgins died 19 Nov 1882, Juanita, Michigan and was laid to rest in Watrosville Cemetery, Tuscola County, Michigan.
Harris married Speede (Spede, Speedie) Sharp, daughter of Andrew and Jane Sharp, on 14 March 1836 in Wayne Township, Ashtabula County, OH and the family is found there until after the 1860 census when they moved to Michigan.

The children for Harris and Speede Higgins are:
               James M Higgins  b 1847,
                   Ella C
Higgins      b 1850
               Dwight Higgins    b 1851, and
               Thatcher Higgins b 1858
All born in Ashtabula County, OH.
Can anyone tell me who Harrison's parents are?
Brothers? Sisters? Where in New York was he born?
Any information would be greatly appreciated and I would be happy to share any and all information I have on this limb of the family tree.
Sincerely ~ Charlene Huckabee-Hubbard

Looking for all ancestors and descendents of Michael Higgins (born abt. 1844) who married Ann Devaney (born abt. 1845). Children from this union include Winifred Mary, Delia, Bernard, Elizabeth, Ann, Michael, Thomas, James, John and Stephen. Ann remained in Ireland and married a man named Burns. Stephen also remained and his descendents still live on the family land. Unsure what happened to Michael. He might have immigrated to Colorado. All other children came to the USA and settled in Essex County New Jersey.

Part of the Higgins' family moved to Kansas, Oklahoma
and Texas. Many of them lived in Higgins, Texas. I had
a great, great grandfather, Morgan Higgins, who lived
in Oklahoma and who was a 7 ft. tall Methodist
preacher back in the mid-19th century. My father's
name was Herman M. Higgins born 1900 in Randolph
County Indiana, died 1988 in Pomona, California. He
married Wava Johnson of Losantville, Indiana in
Delaware County. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Can you help
12 Feb 2004

My paternal grandmother's two sisters emigrated to the USA in 1913 from Cobh. They came from Ballyglass, Kilmovee, Ballaghadreen, Co. Mayo.
Their names were Mary Higgins (born 1896) and Catherine Higgins (born 1899). Mary married John Kennedy from Blessington, Co. Wicklow and Catherine married John Cawley from Moygara, Ballymote, Co. Sligo (not sure of dates). Catherine and John had two sons, one of which died from a drowning accident in 1944 aged 17 years.

I would like to trace the families of these 2 women somewhere in the USA. Does anybody have any idea as to how I could do this with the limited information I have?

I am looking for William Higgins who married Ann Black in 1830 in Lanark, Scotland. They came to US sometime after. In 1836 they had their first son, James in PA. Then had second son John in 1842. There is possible a daughter Elizabeth. It is also possible that they lived in IN on their way to IL. That is where I pick up the trail. Ann, James and John lived in Cumberland Co., IL and show up on 1870 census. James served in Civil War on Union side. I lose John after the 1880 census, but do know that he and wife Sarah had a daughter Daisy b. 7 Feb 1886, (1900 Census states July 1887). I know they had other sons and daughters but have lost them after that. I come from James who married Rose Anna Partlow.  James Higgins, age 64, and Anna, age 35, in 1900 census in Crooked Creek Township, Cumberland County. and James Higgins, age 74, 1910 census, in the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Danville, Vermillion County, Illinois.

On 21 SEP 1848 Samuel Higgins married Mary Hays in Jasper Co., IL.
I believe I found this family on page 175 (89) of  the  4 SEP 1850 census in Homer Champaign Co., IL.
Line  20 Family 20 is as follows:

Samuel Higgins, age 25, male,  blacksmith, born IL
 Mary                        24 female                 born OH
William Barns             20 male               born Indiana
Hanna M                  16 female             born Penna
Isabel A. Hays            7 female             born in Ohio
Charles Hays              5 male                born in IL

Suspect Isabel and Charles are niece and nephew of Mary. I am looking for children of Samuel and Mary.

My great grandmother, Theresa Alvira Higgins,
whose  mother reportedly was Mary Hays, born in Ohio and
father  was Higgins, born in IL, was born in Sep 1850
supposedly  in Jefferson Co., IL. Moved to California about 18
months of age but can not find her there until 1870 when she
 married  there.
Trying to confirm parents of Theresa.
