Alanson McNally,
my great-great grandfather. He was born April 13, 1837 at
McNally's Ferry and died May 10, 1901. He was the son of Moses and
Martha Guiou McNally. His death notice in the Daily Gleaner stated that
he "was one of the most highly respected men of York County and
that he had the esteem and confidence of his fellow men and of those who
knew him best is amply evidenced by the fact that he was for 19 years
one of representatives of the parish of Queensbury in the Municipal
Council, having first been elected Councillor in 1882. The late
Mr. McNally also served as Warden for one year."
Alanson's wife,
Annie Jane Colter McNally with her grandchildren in the summer of 1914
and with her sons George and Sandy. She was born in Sheffield, NB
in 1843 and died in 1916. She was the daughter of Alexander and
Eleanor Johnston Colter.
Above
is a portrait of my great grandfather, Alexander Colter McNally
as a young man. He
was born on the family farm that he took over from his father
Alanson. He was a farmer, maple sugar producer, and at one time a
fisheries officer. He was born in 1868 and died in 1939. Below
he is pictured in later life along with his wife, Ella Fraser McNally
On
the left above is a portrait of my great grandfather Alexander
"Sandy" McNally standing with his
cousin
Harry Clinton McNally of Montana.
Harry is standing on the left. The next
photo is the family of Dr. George Johnston McNally,
brother of Sandy McNally. He was at one time a mayor of the city of
Fredericton, NB but later moved to Berwick, Nova Scotia to practice
medicine. The third photo is
G. Fred McNally, a half 1st cousin to Alexander and George. A
former teacher, principal and school inspector, Dr. G.Fred McNally
served as Alberta's Deputy Minister of Education, 1935-1946 and
as Chancellor of the University of Alberta, 1946-1952. He died in
Edmonton December 7, 1965. He is responsible as well, for the
early research done on the McNally family. The last photo is
also of G. Fred McNally along with his wife, children, sister and
mother. The photo would have been taken prior to 1941,

The photo above is of Henry Clinton McNally and his wife Esther Jones of
Montana. Henry was the son of Moses McNally and brother to Alanson,
pictured at the top of this page. He
went to Montana when he was 22 years old. He first worked in placer
mines and on his own claims. He worked for the Bratton Bar Pioneer
Company in the vicinity of Gold Creek. After working at Bratton's Bar,
he went to Greenhorn Gulch near Helena and bought into the diggings
there He stayed ten years, working two years for practically nothing.
From Greenhorn Gulch, Mr. McNally went into the Blackfoot country and
there married Esther Jones in 1883. There were three children of this
union but a daughter died at an early age. He raised horses in the
Blackfoot country. He sold that ranch in 1912 and finally settled in the
small town of Ovando, 17 miles from Helmville. This information
came from Narda Gard McNally, wife of Robert Coles McNally, Henry's
grandson. The biographical information was taken from the book
"Profile of Early Ovando" by Hazel Jacobsen. He was also
proclaimed a Pioneer of Montana by the Sons and Daughters of Montana
Pioneers.
