SLAVE OWNERS/WILLS

'Puff Adders Head'
This Kente motif is a symbol of exploitation,
being over-burdened with work.
From the African proverb,
"I cannot even carry the python, yet you are asking me to
use the puff adders head as the carrying pad."
The information below was taken from the Ste. Genevieve County Records and transcribed by Kathryn Grant. The Will below includes information that pertains to slaves only. |

Motion to strike out slaves from Inventory:
*Hiram
BLACLEDGE states and shows to the court, that on the 1st day of January 1858, he was the legal owners of certain negro slaves: Peyton, Nelson, Samuel, Martha, Charlotte, Eliza, Jane, Reuben and Matilda. That being the owner as aforesaid and having said slaves in possession. Louis C. Menard being the administrator of the Estate of Joseph Coffman, dec'd, illegally, erroneously and wrongfully inventoried the above named slaves as the property of and belonging to the said Estate of Joseph Coffman Dec'd; he therefore moves the court to strike and discharge said slaves from said Inventory. |
