Second Generation

3. Photo Charlie (Kittel) (CC) MOGEN was born on Mar 10, 1882 in Numedal, Norway. He died on May 11, 1959 in Livingston, MT. Changed name from GROTERUD to Mogen upon immigration. Charlie spent his first four years in Norway, emigrating to America with his Aunt, Mother and three siblings in 1886. They lived a short time in western Minnesota, later moving with the family to Blooming Valley township in eastern South Dakota when it was opened for homesteading. Charlie grew up there, striking out on his own in 1903.

Margit Olson was also born in Telemark Brasper Amtsaude, Norway on Sept 18th, 1879. At the age of six she emigrated to America with her parents, settling in Wisconsin. After working for a year on a tobacco farm, the family moved to eastern North Dakota to prove up a relinquished homestead near Milton, ND.

About 1903 or 04, the Eastern half of Mckenzie county in western North Dakota was opened to homesteading. Margit and two of her brothers and a sister along with two neighboring brothers and sisters headed west to Mckenzie county to find homesteads. They all located near each other in what is now Keene Township, bringing a herd of cattle with them to start ranching.

During this same time period, Charlie became acquainted with a young man who was also looking for homestead land. They hired a locator who knew the country. They were on the north side of the Missouri River, but needed to get to the South side. They found a cable ferry that took the locator, his team and buggy, Charlie and his friend over to the South side where they located land for a homestead. This homestead was to be the home where Charlie and Margit lived until moving to Livingston, MT to be near Roald and Alice who lived there.

During the early years, Charlie worked for other ranchers in the area. The one he talked about the most was a horse rancher, and working for him was when he learned to ride and handle rough stock.

Charlie's homestead was located about five miles from Margit's homestead. Roald does not remember how they met, but it was most likely at one of the dances that were common in those days. Charlie and Margit were married at Margit's home church in Walsh county near Milton on December 31, 1908.
