Home Surname List Name Index Sources Email Us | Second Generation9. Bertha MOGEN was born on May 2, 1895 in Blooming Valley Twp, South Dakota. She died in childbirth on Jan 24, 1929. After grade school where undoubtedly her older sisters were her teachers, Bertha graduated from Summit high school in 1914 and then attended Northern "Normal" school, as did her future husband, Clayton Schmidt. Both of these young people taught in area schools, met, and were married on August 9, 1921. They made their home in Wilmot, SD where Clayton was the Superintendent of the Wilmot Schools. During the next few years, four children were born: Clayton and Clinton, born June 3, 1922, twins who were born prematurely--Clinton did not survive; Beth Elaine, born October 17, 1925, died March 12, 1928, at age three; and Craig, born January 24, 1929. Bertha died after the birth of Craig and was buried in the Schmidt family plot in the Wilmot Cemetery. Bertha MOGEN and Clayton SCHMIDT
were married on Aug 4, 1921.
Clayton SCHMIDT
was born on Oct 2, 1890 in Mildmay, Ontario, Canada. He died in Apr
1954 in Peever, South Dakota.. After the death of Bertha in 1929,
Clayton reared the two boys with family help. He never re-married. For a few
weeks Grandma Mogen and Aunt Lillian cared for the children and later Clayton's
sisters, first Euphemia and then Emma came to live with the family and acted
as mother to the boys. Clayton continued to be the Superintendent of the school
and along the way completed work and received his Master's degree from USD.
In 1940, Clayton left Wilmot and lived on his farm in Goodwill Township, Roberts
County, until the next year when the Peever school asked him to become the Superintendent.
He continued in that position until his untimely death on April 10, 1954.
He is buried in the Wilmot Cemetery beside Bertha and the two young children.
