8. Photo Conrad MOGEN was born on Dec 8, 1892 in Blooming Valley Twp, South Dakota. He died on Dec 13, 1962 in Webster, SD. He was buried on Dec 16, 1962 in Waubay, SD. Conrad was born on December 8, 1892, the seventh of thirteen children in the family of C. K. MOGEN in Blooming Valley Township, Grant County, South Dakota. He was the first white child born in Blooming Valley township shortly after the area was opened up for settlement. He attended the elementary grades in the Blooming Valley school, and in 1908 came to Waubay to attend High School. He lived with his oldest sister Gena, Mrs August Hovland. He worked at various jobs in the community while going to school. He started working part time at the State Bank of Waubay on April 1, 1911, several months before he graduated from high school second in his class. His part-time job lasted over 50 years.

Conrad served in the US Army Signal Corps during most of 1918, and was aboard ship ready for transport overseas when the Armistice was signed on November 11. 1918. In 1919, in partnership with his order brother Gilbert and others, he purchased the State Bank from Silas T. LaSell. In 1926 due to reverses in the economy, the bank was closed. After a short period, Conrad and Gilbert were hired by the new owners to operate the bank. They eventually purchased the bank from these backers.

On June 19, 1929, Conrad married Myrtle O. Sletten of Pierpont, SD. She was the daughter of O J and Petra Sletten. To this marriage were born three children: Carol Sue in 1930, Richard Sletten in 1932, and Conrad Joseph in 1942.

Conrad served the community of Waubay in many ways. He was active in civic and community affairs before and after his marriage. He served as city and school treasurer for forty years. He was a charter member and served as a service officer of the Brady-Monson American Legion Post. He was a member of the Day County OPA board during WWII and was a member of the Day County Draft Board during the Korean Conflict.



Conrad and Myrtle both became ill in early 1962 with cancer. Myrtle passed away in October, Conrad in December of that year.

Conrad MOGEN and Myrtle Olivia SLETTEN were married on Jun 19, 1929 in Pierpont, Day County, SD. Photo Myrtle Olivia SLETTEN (daughter of Ole J (OJ) SLETTEN and Petra Mathilda KNUDSON) was born on Nov 21, 1899 in Pierpont, Day County, SD. She died on Oct 19, 1962 in Waubay, SD. She was buried on Oct 22, 1962 in Waubay, SD. Myrtle graduated from Pierpont High School in 1918 and attended St Olaf College in the 1918-19 school year. She later attended beautician school in Minneapolis and worked in Aberdeen until her marriage in 1929. She, too, was very active in her community and church. She served as a member and officer of the PTA during the time her children were in school. She sang in the choir for many years at the First Congregational Church. She was a long-time member and officer of the Tuesday Literary Club and also served as a member of the Day County Museum in Webster. Conrad MOGEN and Myrtle Olivia SLETTEN had the following children:
