William Sexton Family

9.  Abraham B. Sexton

Abraham B. Sexton was born Abt. 1822 in Cabell County, (West) Virginia, and died Abt. November 1852 in Cabell County, (West) Virginia.

This, presumably, is the Abraham everyone has taken for the progenitor of the Cabell County Sexton Clan.  The book "1860 Cabell County Census Annotated", compiled by Ernestine Hippert, for KYOWVA Genealogical Society, Box 1254, Huntington, WV 25714-1254, page 66 states, "342/331 John Sexton, 58, farmer [s/o Abraham B. Sexton; married Louisa Ann, 1820-30, Dec., 1848] ".  We are not certain where this information came from since there is no source information listed, and no supporting source information has been found.  There are two pieces of data that might have suggested this to people, but we feel this leap of faith will not prove out.

Item #1: John Sexton is named the executor of Abraham B. Sexton's estate 26 September 1853 (Cabell County Wills and Estates, Book 2, page 145).  There was no will as such, just an estate sale and settlement.  It was settled 7 February 1856 (Cabell County Wills and Estates, Book 2, page 244).  Since there was no will, there is no document that lists John as the son of Abraham, but it is logical that someone might conclude he was, especially in light of item #2.

Item #2: The first, and only, direct census listing of Abraham was in the Cabell County 1850 census.  There he is listed on page 39 as a farmer living in the Dicy Barrett residence.  The census copy is of poor quality and many have interpreted his age as 78.  Perhaps the above estate sale and settlement pushed people to the interpretation of the age as 78, but it seems clear from the curve of the lines that his age is 28.  Some 12 lines above his name on the same page is a boy age seven and the manner in which the census taker wrote the 7 is clearly not the same as used in recording Abraham's age, especially when looking at a magnified image.

Reviewing the PPT table listed under Jacob H. Sexton, it appears that John Sexton as head of household for the Sexton family has 2 able bodied males of age 16 in 1836 and again in 1837, including himself.  In 1838 the count of able bodied males of age 16 in John's household goes back down to 1, and Abraham appears on the scene.  That would be fairly consistent with Abraham B. showing up in the 1850 census as age 28.

Abraham never married.
