William Sexton Family

5.  Andrew H. Sexton

Andrew H. Sexton was born 8 October 1809 in Cabell County, (West) Virginia, and died After 30 June 1880 in Hamilton County, Illinois.  He married (1) Mary Malcolm ?, daughter of Joseph Malcolm, 8 October 1830 in (West) Virginia.  She was born 2 March 1806 in (West) Virginia, and died 5 November 1846 in Cabell County, (West) Virginia.  He married (2) Mary F. Reynolds 11 April 1847 in Cabell County, (West) Virginia.  She was born 22 February 1828 in Virginia, and died 30 November 1895 in Wayne County, Illinois.

Andrew likely first appears in Cabell County records when he appears in the enumeration of the Personal Property Tax (PPT) records for 1827.

William Jr. is not listed starting this year because he is either in Sangamon County, Illinois,
or on his way there.

3/9/1829 Elizabeth Saxton 2 6
The entries are of such poor quality for this year, that no other Sexton or Saxton entries
can be made out.  It is presumed John is among the 2 males in Elizabeth's household.

3/22/1830 Andrew Saxton 1 3
4/19/1830 Elizabeth Saxton - 1
4/19/1830 John Saxton 1 1
It appears the previous assumption was correct since Elizabeth now has no men over the
age of 16 in her home, and John now reappears, along with Andrew for the first time by
name.  It appears John was counted head of household in 1827 and 1828, and Andrew
was the other male over 16 years of age.

3/2/1832 Andrew Saxton 1 2
3/2/1832 John Saxton 1 1

It would appear Andrew is a member of this Cabell County Sexton/Saxton family.  Further cementing this idea is a deed entered into for 50 acres of land on Fudges Creek, Cabell County (Cabell County Deed Book 4, page 600) purchased jointly by John and Andrew Sexton from James Lemay.  In 1831 Andrew purchases 40 acres on Fudges Creek, Cabell County from Pyrhus McGinnis (Cabell County Deed Book 4, page 635).  In 1834 Andrew and Mary sell this 40 acre tract on Fudges Creek to Strother W. Harmon (Cabell County Deed Book 5, page 440).  Then in 1835 Andrew purchases 40 acres from Strother W. Harrison (Cabell County Deed Book 6, page 303).  In 1837 Andrew and Mary sell out the original 50 acres on Fudges Creek to brother, and partner, John (Cabell County Deed Book 7, page 34).  Then in 1838 Andrew received a land grant for 75 acres on the North side of the left fork of Fudges Big Creek.  In 1847 Andrew received a grant for 140 acres on the waters of Fudges Big Creek.  In 1853 Andrew and Mary sell 40+ acres (4 tracts) on Fudges Creek to C. L. Roffe (Cabell County Deed Book 11, page 111).

Andrew appears in the 1850 Cabell County, (West) Virginia, page 001,

On the same page is Joseph M. Sexton, age 26 and born in Virginia (son of Andrew), and James Sexton, age 21 and born in Virginia (son of Adam).  It would appear that when Andrew and Mary sold the 40+ acres on Fudges Creek in 1853, they were preparing for a move west.  The census record appears to show a birth location of In for James W.  Could that mean Indiana?  Could it be that they stopped in White County, Indiana and lived near his sister Catherine before deciding to move on to Illinois?  Perhaps they traveled to White County with brother Jacob's family?  Or is it just a census taker's mistake?
