Simon Mould or Moulds, one of four children of Charlotte Ale and Simon Mould,  was christened at St Andrews,

Enfield, Middlesex on 10.11.1776.

He next came to attention in the Essex Assizes, as a young labourer, for his involvement in four offences of

cattle stealing in 1796 and 1797 with another young man, William Presnell/Presnall. Fortunately, the sentences

for these capital offences were reduced to transportation.

Simon Moulds and William Presnall's offences.

Tried at Essex Chelmsford Lent Assizes on 8 March, 1797. Tried with William Presnall. Assize records from

Public Record Office (Ass 135/237 pt. 1 1p/386) labourers from the parish of Plaistow, County of Essex.

"on the Eighth day of February in the Thirty Seventh Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third,

King of Great Britain, with force and arms at the parish aforesaid one Mare of the Price of Ten Pounds of the

Goods and Chattels of John Que then and there being found feloniously did steal take and lead away against

the peace of our said Lord and King his Crown and Dignity."

Also, 1796:

"William Presnell....and Simon Moulds, late of the same, Labourer, on the sixteenth day of August, in the thirty

sixth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third King of Great Britain with force and arms at the

parish aforesaid in the County aforesaid one cow of the price of ..pounds and one heifer the price of ..pounds...

goods and chattels of Joseph Osborne...."

" Committed 13th September, 1796, by Thomas Barnard Esq. charged upon the oaths of John Hicks and

others for feloniously stealing one cow calf to the value of thirty shillings the Goods and Chattels of Elizabeth

Hicks- Simon Moulds charged upon the oath of John Bonnott and others for feloniously stealing one Heifer of

the value of Seven Pounds the Goods and Chattels of the said John Bonnott".

Sentenced to life.

Her grandmother was

 Ann Davis

Simon soon began his relationship with Ann Davis, a convict who had arrived in Australia from Gloucestershire

on the Lady Juliana in 1790 at the age of about 16. Ann had had three previous relationships, having had

children in all three, she had three young children already and had been blind for a few years when they began

their partnership around 1802-1804.  They were to have four children, three of them named after Mould family

members (Simon b 29.3.1805, Susannah b 10.9.1808 and Charlotte b 1.4.1811) the fourth being John b 29.3.

1814. For no obvious reason Simon and Ann waited until 21.2.1820 before being married at St Johns,

Parramatta. They were to remain together throughout their lives.

John and Mary had the following children:

+          2 F         i.  Sarah Ann Kirk  was born on 11 Apr 1860. She died on 6 Sep 1883.

xe "Kirk, Albert William"

2nd Battalion

The 2nd Battalion was among the first infantry units raised for the AIF during the First World War. Like the 1st,

3rd and 4th Battalions it was recruited from New South Wales and, together with these battalions, formed the

1st Brigade.

The battalion was raised within a fortnight of the declaration of war in August 1914 and embarked just two

months later. After a brief stop in Albany, Western Australia, the battalion proceeded to Egypt, arriving on 2

December. The battalion took part in the ANZAC landing on 25 April 1915 as part of the second and third

waves, and was led by Lieutenant Colonel G. F. Braund, who was killed in action nine days later. On 6 August,

the 1st Brigade led the charge at Lone Pine. Among the dead was the commander of the 2nd Battalion,

Lieutenant Colonel R. Scobie, killed during a Turkish counter-attack. The battalion served at ANZAC until the

evacuation in December 1915.

After the withdrawal from Gallipoli, the battalion returned to Egypt. In March 1916, it sailed for France and the

Western Front. From then until 1918 the battalion took part in operations against the German Army, principally

in the Somme Valley in France and around Ypres in Belgium. The battalion’s first major action in France was at

Pozières in the Somme valley in July 1916. Later the battalion fought at Ypres, in Flanders, before returning to

the Somme for winter.

In early 1917 the German Army withdrew to the formidable defences of the Hindenburg Line. As the 2nd

Battalion advanced towards these defences in April 1917, Private T. J. Kenny attacked several enemy machine

gun positions with grenades, earning the 2nd Battalion's only Victoria Cross. The battalion spent much of the

rest of 1917 fighting in increasingly horrendous conditions around Ypres.

In 1918 the battalion returned to the Somme valley and helped to stop the German spring offensive in March

and April. The battalion subsequently participated in the Allies’ own offensive, launched to the east of Amiens

on 8 August 1918. This advance by British and Empire troops was the greatest success in a single day on the

Western Front, one that German General Erich Ludendorff described as “the black day of the German Army in

this war”.

The battalion continued operations until late September. At 11 am on 11 November, 1918, the guns fell silent.

The November armistice was followed by the peace treaty of Versailles signed on 28 June 1919.

Between November 1918 and May 1919 the men of the 2nd Battalion returned to Australia for demobilisation

and discharge.

someone coming to our place to say that Mrs.Kirk down Ironbark Road had been badly scalded. I had to go

over to my aunty's (Dad's brother lived near us) and Mum got the pony and rode down. Mrs. Kirk had been

washing. Lots of people then washed in a kerosine tin of water on an outside fire, and she was carrying it in

and somehow spilt it all, and she ended up with all this boiling water all over her legs. She had a young baby

and a little boy. I don't know what Mum took down with her, but she fixed Mrs. Kirk up as best she could and

brought the Baby home. Somebody took Mrs. Kirk to hospital and we had the baby for such a long time while

she was in hospital."

In about 1994, a lady name Doreen, who was a Kirk, contacted my mother to see if our family had any old

photos. My mother told me this lady had a sister named Mavis who had already passed away and that the

father of these two ladies was known by the name 'Henry'. This particular Henry Kirk oversaw the voting at

elections at Dural. In error at one election he missed ruling out my grandmother's name and my grandmother

received a fine notice, Mr. Kirk sent off the appropriate letter and solved the problem._

Hi John,

Sorry to have taken so long to find that 'Kirk' phone number.

I have tried ring the number a few times tonight but it is given the old style engaged signal.

My Mum heard from Doreen as long ago as  10 years +-.

The Number 9636-2453.

I do not have any idea of the surname now.

All the best,

Marian
