Old Mission Cemetery
Kootenai County, Idaho

Take Exit #39 from I-90 between Coeur d'Alene and Kingston Idaho. The town of Cataldo is in Shoshone county, the mission is in Kootenai county.

At least 300 people are buried here, according to the records of the mission, but only these few stones remain. Most had no stone when buried, just a mound of dirt over them. Even the mounds have flattened out through the years and it is difficult to tell where the plots are.

This was the cemetery for the Mission of the Sacred Heart, which has two sections. The main one in front of the mission and the other down the hill west of the mission. This small account does not do justice to the large number that are buried here.

The limits of the cemetery, as of Apr 12, 1978, still have not been defined exactly. The fenced in area is what they have decided is for sure cemetery. Many of the mounds are simply unmarked graves.

I walked and surveyed this cemetery on Sep 04, 2001, then transcribed from my findings, which are meager. I later found some old records and have added them. There still are many I do not have.

Polotkin, Louise Siuwheem, b. 1800, d. 1853, photo, another marker said, Louise Siuwheem, Apostle to the Coeur d'Alene Indians, Louise was one of the first Coeur d'alene Indians baptized a Christian by Fr DeSmet on his visit in 1842. She was married to Adolph Polotkin and had three grown sons. They moved to the First mission near St Maries in 1843 and then came here when the mission was relocated in 1846. Louise was descended from Chief Circling Raven who had an ancient vision of the coming of Blackrobes who would bring a new religion. God prepared Louise to be the apostle of her tribe in the new ways. She taught religion to the children. Cared for the sick and the orphans, taught hymns and prayers and came to this cemetary every night to pray for those buried here. Louise died and was buried here in 1853 during the construction of the big new church on the hill. The Missionaries called Louise the Spiritual Director and Guardian Angel of her whole tribe.
