Riverside Cemetery is situated on the west side of the highway as
you drive south of the town of Riverside on Hwy 97. You can easily spot
it off to your right.
There is a memorial to Mary Williams, 1878-1939, in the cemetery, honoring
this dedicated lady for her civic minded efforts which included many
hours of labor, plus visiting homes for financial backing to accomplish
the restoration of this cemetery. The first owner was a lodge and the
first burial was in 1901.
Sometime after that date, the cemetery must have started
to lack good care, causing it to became very rundown. This is why Mary
started her project. Since 1930 it has been owned and cared for by the
City of Riverside. It is a beautiful cemetery now and very well maintained.
Since my first readings I have acquired a copy of the sexton files which are complete up to Jan 18, 2006.
I have compared my work with these records. Names followed by and asterisk * either did not have a headstone when I was there or are burials since I was there.
I first walked Riverside cemetery on May 22, 2000, transcribing this work
from those readings. As with any older cemetery there were many unidentifiable
stones or many missing.
I used a digital camera both times I visited the cemetery. I do not have a photo of any of the names with an asterisk.
