John Nightingale of Bredgar, Laborer, will dated 4 Aug 1648
My body to be buried accordinge to the discetion of the Overseers of this my last will

My wife Alice Nightingale shall have and inioy the use and interest of all my monyes specified by bond or bill or otherwise lent as may appeare by a noote heretofore taken, for her maintenance during her naturall life, and the full and free inioyment and disposinge of all my householdstuff whatsoever, except the fetherbed and bolster which I now lay upon

And after her decease, my will is that the principall of monyes shall thus be bestowed :
Inprimis I will that John Lane, Minister, if he survive her, shall have 40 shillings paid unto him soe sone as monyes can be called in; and if he shall discease, then to the 2 daughters of the said John, Margaret and Dorothie.
Item I will and bequeath to James Ward (Wood) minister of Tenham, his wife, 40 shillings alsoe after my wives decease as aforesaid.
Item I give unto John Doe of Hucking, husbandman, 40 shillings according to the foregoinge direction viz. after her decease.
Item I give and bequeath unto my two kinswomen Joane Marchant and Mary Marchant als Denman dwellinge att Chiddenlee, to each of them as is in manner before specified.
Item I give unto all the children of John Miller which he had by Ann Nightingale my sister, the summe of �3 a peece
Item I give unto my two God daughters Elizabeth Bridge, daughter of William Bridge and Ann Anvill, daughter of William Anvill of Stockbury, the summe of �5 a peece
and to the said Ann the fetherbed and bolster before excepted out of my housholdstuffe, all the rest whereof I have given unto my wife whom I make and ordaine sole exedcutridge of this my last will and testament.

The residue of my monyes unbequeathed I give unto the above named Joane and Mary Marchant
Now to the intent this my will may be the better performed I ordaine Thomas Batcheler my landlord and Steven Brockhull of Swanton Court overseers of this my last will and testament

Now if my wife Alice shall enter into a second Marriage after my decease, my will is that she shall have noe profit of my monyes heretofore mentioned, but only enioye the g---- and the former legacies bequeathed in monyes to be presently paid after my decease soe soone as the money can be called on.

This is my last will and testament unto which I have sett my hand and seale the day an yeare above written
