In the name of god amen the third day of March 1591 and in the four and thirty year of the reign of our sovereign lady Elizabeth by the grace of god of England France and Ireland queen def etc. I John Page of Elmsted senior in the county of Kent being sick in body but of a perfect remembrance thanks be to god do make and ordain this my testament containing my last will in manner and form as followeth First I give and bequeath my soul to almighty god my maker and creator hoping assuredly that he will pardon my sins and accept me for one of his children and accompt me among his Saints by the only means and merits of Jesus Christ his Son my only Saviour and Redeemer Also I will my body to be buried in the churchyard of Elmsted aforesaid etc.

Item I bequeath to the poor people of the parish of Elmsted 3s 4p to be distributed when most need shall be after my decease
Also I do give unto my sister Alice Page one bushel of wheat
and to Agnes fode one peck of wheat to be given them at my burial
Item I give unto my son John my cupboard Standing in the hall and my great brass pot with both of them I will him to continue and remain in my house as belongs thereunto

All the rest of my goods my debts and legacies discharged I give and bequeath unto Margary my wife every of my children kept with reasonable meat drink clothing and harbour until they come to 20 years of age whom I make my sole executor

Moreover as concerning the disposition of my houses and lands I will that my wife her executor or assigns shall enjoy and receive all the commodities and profits each and every of them for the maintenance of her self and keeping of her children in manner as before said for long as she shall a widow and keep her self unmarried

and after her decease I will that my son John shall have my mansion house with appurtenances and land belonging there unto forever and also that my son Sampson shall have my lands with the barn lying and being at Northlye (North Leigh farm?) and 2 acres of land lying at Stone Street called Croft at the Oak for ever Provided always that if either of my said sons die before he shall be 20 years old then I will that the survivor or longest liver of them shall have all my houses and lands

And if then both die before the time before expressed then I will that my daughter Christian shall have all my said houses and lands after the decease of my wife for ever and the keeping her self a widow but if it shall happen that my said wife shall marry then I will that she her executor or assigns shall have ( keeping my children in manner as before said) the commodities and profits of my aforesaid mansion house and lands which I have given unto my son John until my son John be 20 years of age and then I will that my son John shall have the said house and lands paying afterwards out of the land yearly at one of the four usual feasts in the year Viz Michaelmas Christmas Lady Day or Midsummer which shall follow in twelve months after, after his entrance and occupying the said lands and house 40 shillings unto his mother my wife during her life and also I will that if it shall happen my said wife shall marry then I will also that she her executors or assigns shall have keeping my children in manner as aforesaid the commodity and profits of the houses and lands which I have given unto my son Sampson until he be 20 years old and then I will that my son Sampson shall have the said lands paying afterwards unto my wife whilst she liveth out of the said lands 10 shillings yearly in manner and after the same sort as his brother shall pay the 40s before specified Provided always that if the said son of 50s be not yearly paid according to my true meaning unto my said wife by my said sons or their assigns after them said then I will that my wife or her assigns shall come to their lands in manner as before and distrain upon his land through whom the fault of non payment is and at all times and so often as any part of the aforesaid money is behind and not paid shall do the like and distress carry away and keep or otherwise until the full yearly sum of fifty shillings be paid Then I will that my said wife during her or her assigns enjoying the aforesaid houses and lands while she shall be widow or married shall keep the said houses maintained whichever & shall nether strip nor waste the said lands & shall pay the lords rent yearly and other yearly duties going out of the house,

Item I give unto my daughter Christian ten pounds to be paid her when she shall be 20 years old which ten pounds I will shall be paid out of my mansion house and lands which I have given unto my son John for not payment whereof I will that my Daughters executor or her assigns shall distrain in the said house or on the said lands or otherwise take up the remedy the thereof until the said ten pounds be fully paid any thing in the premises to the contrary not withstanding Provided always that if it shall happen my said daughter shall die before shall be 20 years old then I will that the person enjoying the said house and land shall be eased and not charged with paying the sum 10 pounds
