Extract of Will of Dinah Pearson

of Brenchley, Kent

Will of Dinah Pearson widow of Brenchley, dated 4th August 1641

Item: to Stephen my son 12d
Item: to Elizabeth Hugget my daughter, wife of Thomas Hugget 12d.
Item: to Elizabeth Clerk wife of John Clerk daughter of the said Thomas Hugget £30 to be paid within one month after the death of her husband.
If she died before her husband and had children then her brother William Hugget shall pay them the £30 as they each reach the age of 21.
And that the executor shall pay 42s 6d yearly until £30 is paid.
10s to be paid to Elizabeth Hugget yearly for life in full and the other 32s 6d to be paid to Elizabeth Clerk yearly until payment of the £30 and, after the death of her mother, Elizabeth Clerk to have the whole of the 40s 6d.

Item: if Elizabeth Clerk died leaving any child or children incapable of writing the interest paid to their mother by should go towards the better education of the children.
Item: if Elizabeth Clerk died without issue - then the £30 be given to Stephen Huggett brother of Elizabeth.
Item: to Mary Hugget, Elizabeth Huggett, and to Stephen Ferrall and John Ferrall sons and daughters of my daughter Dorothy Ferral £30 to be paid when they severally reach 21 years of age or on the day of their marriage to be shared equally amongst them.
In the meantime my executor shall pay 40s a year equally amongst them. If either Mary or Elizabeth die then the other to receive her share. If either Stephen or John die then the other to receive their share.

Item: to Mary Tasker, granddaughter, £5 when she is 21 or marries. If Mary dies the sum to go to Elizabeth her sister.
Item: to Mary Huggett and Mary Tasker, god-daughters, three pairs of sheets to be delivered to their mother for her use.
Item: to John Tasker, son-in-law, £30 which he owes me by bond.
Item: to my daughters Dorothy Farrell, Mary Tasker and my grandchild Elizabeth Clerk daughter of Thomas Huggett, all my household stuff (except the sheets already given) and all my apparel and my (three words undecipherable) in my house to be divided between them.

Item: Dinah owned land in Brenchley, some of which had been mortgaged for £100 by a third party. The said money was for the use of Mary and Elizabeth Huggett.
Item: appointed John Ferrall, son-in-law, as executor who would receive the said £100 when it is repaid and put it to the use of Mary and Elizabeth Huggett.
Item: bequeathed the said lands, tenements and appurtenances to John Ferrall on condition that he paid the said £100 to Mary and Elizabeth Huggett.

Item: the residue of her goods to John Ferrall who is appointed as her Executor who should be paid 5s for his pains.

And if John Ferrall does not want to undertake the job then John Tasker, son-in-law, be appointed and he be given the mortgaged lands.

Notes: Dinah's maiden name was Davie. She married John Pearson on the 20th of July 1590 in Brenchley.
John Ferrall was the vicar of Brenchley. Dinah was buried 21st August 1643 in Brenchley.
