In the name of god amen the last day of July In the year of our lord god 1593
I Batholomew Pettit of the parish of Staple being sick in body but of good and perfect remembrance praised be god do make this my last will and in manner and form following
first I bequeath my soul unto almighty god my maker I hope that ... the death of Jesus Christ to have .... my sins and my body to be buried in the churchyard of the parish of Staple

Item I will and bequeath a close lying in a place called new leese hard by Whitfield being by estimation 2 acres and a half be it more or less to be sold by my executors and the use of the money to remain towards the bringing up of my children
And I will that my executors shall have the oversight of my children and the putting out of their money of the lands that shall be sold by my executors

Item I give and bequeath all the Residue of lands whatsoever sold by my exeuctors and house by estimation 2 acres unto my two sons William Pettit and Richard Pettit and their heirs of their bodies lawfully begotten to be divided to them by equal? portions when that they shall come to be of the age of 20 years
If it shall fortune that any of my two sons do die without heirs of their bodies lawfully begotten then I will the one to be the others heir
And I will that the farm of the lands and the use of the money of the lands that shall be save by my executors shall remain in the hands of my executors towards the bringing up of my children and then bequeath the ... do give unto them

Item I bequeath to my four daughters Anne Pettit Elen Pettit Joan Pettit and Alice Pettit to any of them ... to be paid to them by my executors so soon as they shall come to the age of 23 years of age
if it fortune that any of my daughters do die before that they shall come to the age of 23 years or without heirs of their bodies lawfully begotten then I will that her or their portion shall remain amongst the other sisters to be divided amongst them by even portions

Item I give to my daughter Anne Pettit a bullock straight after my decease and I give more to her a christening sheet and a christening .archer and a great kettle straight after my decease
and I give to Ellen Pettit the stand kettle next to the bigger straight after my decease
Item I give to my daughter Jone Pettit a coverlet and a blanket at the day of her marriage or when she come? to twenty years of age
Item I give to Alice Pettit my daughter a feather bed and the bolster that is to the bed at the day of her marriage or at the age of twenty years
Item I give to Anne Pettit my daughter my great chest and I will and give .... Pettit the next chest and to Elen the least chest

All the residue of my goods both corn and cattle householdstuff or wooden anything that is out of my will unbequeathed I give to my executors towards the bringing up of my children
Also I do make and ordaine Thomas .... and Edward Hall my executors to this my will
and I will that William Pettit and Anne Pettit shall not change my executors neither meddle with my executors to call any account of my executors but take the portions when the time shall come

Bartholomew Pettit & Alice Asbury married 29 Mar 1573 at St Mildred's, Canterbury.
Alice the wife of Bartholomew Pettit was buried at Staple 14 Jan 1592/3.
Bartholomew was buried at Staple 1 Aug 1593.
