I hereby Constitute and appoint my much respected Friends William Wood of Groves in the parish of
Eastchurch in the said Isle of Sheppey Esquire George Evans Baker of the Borough of Quinborow
[Queenborough] in the said Isle of Sheppey Esquire and Samuel Brown of the Parish of Saint Mary
Magdalene Bermondsey in the County of Surry Esquire Executors of this my last Will and Testament
And as to such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me I give and
dispose of the same in manner and Form following (that is to say)
I give and bequeath unto the Parish church of Minster aforesaid two Silver plates and one Silver Flaggon for the use of the Administration of the Sacrament of the Lords Supper to be delivered to the Churchwardens of the said parish of Minster for the time being for the use of the said parish by my said Executors within six Months next after my decease And I will and direct that my said Executors do lay out any sum of Money not less than thirty pounds nor more than forty pounds in the purchase thereof at their discretion
I give and bequeath unto my Nephew Thomas Swift the sum of one hundred Pounds of good and
lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid him by my Executors within six Months next after my decease
I also give and bequeath unto the said Thomas Swift one Annuity of yearly sum of fifty
pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain yearly and every year during the term of his
natural life to be paid him by my said Executors out of my Money in the publick Funds by equal half
yearly payments of twenty five pounds each the first payment there to to begin and be made at the
end of six Months next after my decease
I also give and bequeath unto my Nephew Thomas Swift all my Household Furniture and
Household Linnen that I shall have at the time of my decease (except the Furniture usually belonging
to the yellow Room and which shall be therein at the time of my decease)
I also give and bequeath unto my said Nephew Thomas Swift all the Corn Grain Hay podware Straw and Foder which shall
be standing growing or being in or upon the Lands and premisses which I now use and occupy or
shall use and Occupy at the time of my decease
I give and bequeath unto Thomas Swift Son of my said Nephew Thomas Swift the sum of one
thousand and two hundred pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid unto him
by my said Executors when and so soon as he shall have attained his age of twenty one years
And I do hereby order and direct that the Interest proceed and profit of the said sum of one thousand and
two hundred pounds from the time of my decease until the said Thomas Swift the younger shall
have attained his said age of twenty one years shall be laid out applied expended and disposed of by
my Executors in the Maintenance Education and Cloathing of the said Thomas Swift (the Son) at
their discretion and in such manner as they shall think most conducive to his benefit
I also give and bequeath unto the said Thomas Swift Son of my said Nephew Thomas Swift all the
Live Stock which I shall be possessed of at the time of my decease (except twenty ewes to be picked
thereout by the said William Wood)
I also give and bequeath unto the said Thomas Swift (Son of
my said Nephew Thomas Swift) all the Household Plate which I shall have at the time of my decease
And also the Silver Watch which usually hangs over the mantle piece in my Kitchen to be
delivered unto him by my said Executors when and so soon as he shall have attained his age of
twenty one years
But if the said Thomas Swift shall happen to die before he shall have attained his said age of twenty one Years Then and in such case I give an bequeath the said sum of one thousand and two hundred pounds and the several other Legacies by me herein before given and bequeathed unto the said Thomas Swift the Younger unto and amongst all and every other the Child and Children of my said Nephew Thomas Swift (except the eldest son John Swift) equally to be parted and divided between them (if more than one) share and share alike
I give and bequeath unto William Swift and Edward Swift Sons of my said Nephew Thomas Swift the sum of one hundred pounds each of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid unto them respectively by my said Executors when and so soon as they shall respectively have attained their respective ages of twenty one years
I give and bequeath into Eleanor the Wife of Edward Beadle of Quinborow Blacksmith daughter of Mr. John Penn of Minster aforesaid Yeoman and unto Ann Swift daughter of my Nephew Solomon Swift all my Wearing Apparel whatsoever (except Jewels and Rings) equally to be parted and divided between them share and share alike to be delivered to them by my said Executors as soon after my decease as conveniently it may be done
I give and bequeath unto the said Eleanor the Wife of the said Edward Beadle the sum of twenty
pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid her by my said Executors within six
Months next after my decease
I give and bequeath unto the said Eleanor the Wife of the said
Edward Beadle one Annuity or Yearly sum of ten pounds a Year Yearly and every Year during the
term of her natural life to be paid her by my said Executors out of my Money in the Publick Funds by
equal half yearly payments of five pounds each the first payment thereof to begin and be made at the
End of six Months next after my decease
I give and bequeath unto the said John Penn the sum of ten pounds to buy him Mourning to be paid
him by my said Executors as soon after my decease as conveniently it may be done
I also give and bequeath unto the said John Penn and Elizabeth his Wife one Annuity or yearly sum of thirty
pounds a year yearly and every year during the term of their natural lives and the natural life of the
longest liver of them to be paid them by my said Executors out of my Money in the publick Funds by
equal half yearly payments of fifteen pounds each The first payment thereof to begin and be made at
the End of six Months next after my decease
I give and bequeath unto James Penn Son of the said John Penn the sum of ten pounds to buy him Mourning to be paid unto to him by my said Executors as soon after my decease as conveniently may be done
I give and bequeath into my Nephew Solomon Swift the sum of ten pounds to be paid unto to him by my said Executors as soon after my decease as conveniently it may be done
I give and bequeath unto William Swift Son of my said Nephew Solomon Swift the sum of one hundred pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid unto him by my said Executors when and so soon as he shall have attained the age of twenty one years and the Interest proceed and profits thereof from the time of my decease until that time to be paid to or applied by my said Executors for the use and benefit of the said William Swift in such manner as they shall think most conducive to his benefit
I give and bequeath unto Ann Swift daughter of my said Nephew Solomon Swift the sum of one hundred pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid unto her by my said Executors when and so soon as she shall have attained her age of twenty one years together with the Improvements to be by them thereof made in the mean time
I give and bequeath unto Mary Hedgecock of Quinborowe (sic) aforesaid the sum of ten pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain and the Silver Snuff Box which I usually carry about me to be paid and delivered unto her by my said Executors within six Months next after my decease
I give and bequeath unto Mary the Wife of Isaac Rutton of Eastchurch aforesaid Gent(leman) and unto Valentine Wood Son of the said William Wood the sum of one hundred pounds each of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid unto them by my said Executors within six Months next after my decease
I give and bequeath unto my Godson William Isaac Rutton Son of the said Isaac Rutton and Mary
his Wife the sum of two hundred pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be retained
by the said William Wood one of my said Executors within six Months next after my decease and to
be by him paid to the said William Isaac Rutton together with the Improvements to be thereof made
in the Interim when and so soon as he the said William Isaac Rutton shall have attained his said age
of twenty one years
But if the said William Isaac Rutton shall happen to die before he shall have
attained his said age of twenty one years Then I give and bequeath the said sum of two hundred
pounds together with the produce and Improvements to be thereof made unto Catherine Rutton
Daughter of the said Isaac Rutton and Mary his Wife when and so soon as she shall have attained her age of twenty one years
But if the said Catherine Rutton shall happen to die before she shall
have attained her said age of twenty one years Then I give and bequeath the same unto the said
Mary the Wife of the said Isaac Rutton and the said Valentine Wood equally to be divided between them share and share alike
I give and bequeath unto my God Son Iles Baker Son of the aforesaid George Evans Baker the sum of one hundred pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be retained by his said Father out of my personal [Estate?] within six Months next after my decease
I give and bequeath unto the said George Evans Baker the sum of one hundred pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain upon Condition that he the said George Evans Baker shall and do accept the Executorship of this my said last Will and Testament and do prove this my said last Will and Testament and take upon himself the Burthen [Burden] and Execution thereof and then and in such case I will and direct that the said sum of one hundred pounds be by him retained within six Months next after my decease
I give and bequeath unto the said Samuel Brown the Sum of one hundred pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be by him retained within six Months next after my decease
I give and bequeath unto John Williams who lived with my late Brother Thomas Randall deceased at the time of his decease the sum of twenty pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid unto him by my said Executors within six Months next after my decease
I give and bequeath unto John Hopson of the Borough of Quinborowe aforesaid Hoyman the sum of twenty pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid him by my said Executors within six Months next after my decease
I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth now the Wife of William Thames of Minster aforesaid Yeoman the sum of five pounds to buy her Mourning to be paid unto her by my said Executors as soon after my decease as conveniently it may be done
I give and bequeath unto the four Daughters of the said Samuel Brown by Elizabeth his now Wife,
Viz., Sarah Penn Brown, Eleanor Penn Brown, Elizabeth Charlotte Brown and Angelica Randall
Brown the sum of five hundred pounds each of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid
unto them respectively by my said Executors when and so soon as they the said Sarah Penn Brown,
Eleanor Penn Brown, Elizabeth Charlotte Brown and Angelica Randall Brown shall respectively
have attained their several and respective ages of twenty one years
But in case the said William Wood whom I hereby appoint a Trustee for the said Daughters of the said Samuel Brown until they
shall attain their respective ages of twenty one years should happen to die before they shall attain
their several and respective aged of twenty one years
Then I hereby direct that the said four sums of five hundred pounds or such of them as shall not
before have been paid shall within six Months next after the death of the said William Wood be paid
over and transferred unto the said Samuel Brown Father of the said Sarah Penn Brown, Eleanor
Penn Brown, Elizabeth Charlotte Brown and Angelica Randall Brown and be by him paid them
respectively when and so soon as they shall respectively attain their said respective ages of twenty one years
Also I give and bequeath unto the said Angelica Randall Brown my Gold Watch which I usually wear together with the Seals Chain Furniture and appurtenances thereunto belonging
I give and bequeath unto John Spracklyn of the City of Canterbury Linnen Draper the sum of fifty pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid unto him by my said Executors within six Months next after my decease
I give and bequeath unto the said Catherine Rutton Daughter of the said Isaac Rutton and Mary his
Wife the sum of one hundred pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be retained by
my said Executors within six Months next after my decease and to be by them paid to the said
Catherine Rutton together with the Improvements to be therefore made in the Interim when and so
soon as she the said Catharine Rutton shall have attained her age of twenty one years
But if the said Catherine Rutton shall happen to die before she shall have attained the said age of twenty one years
Then I give and bequeath the said sum of one hundred pounds together with the produce and
Improvements to be thereof made unto the said William Isaac Rutton when he shall attain his age of twenty one years
But if the said William Isaac Rutton shall happen to die before he shall have
attained his said age of twenty one years Then I give and bequeath the same unto the said Mary the Wife of the said Isaac Rutton
I give and bequeath unto the afore named William Wood the sum of two hundred pounds of good
and lawful Money of Great Britain to be by him retained and paid himself out of the first Monies
which shall come to his Hands in the Execution of this my said Will
I also give and bequeath unto the said William Wood twenty Two Sheep to be by him picked out of such Sheep as I shall have at the
time of my decease
I also give and Forgive unto the said William Wood all such sum or sums of
Money as he shall have in his Hands of mine or shall be indebted unto me at the time of my decease
I give and bequeath unto Sarah Carrier Wife of William Carrier of Minster aforesaid Yeoman the sum of five pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid her by my said Executors within six Months next after my decease
And all the rest residue and remainder of my Ready Money Securities for Money Money in the Publick Funds Goods Chattels Rights Credits and Personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever and of what nature kind sort or quality soever the same shall be from and after payment of all my just Debts Funeral Expences the several Legacies by me herein given and bequeathed the Charges of Proving this my last Will and Testament and other Incident Charges and Expences I give and bequeath unto Samuel Brown and John Brown Sons of the before named Samuel Brown and Elizabeth his Wife equally to be parted and divided between them share and share alike to be paid and delivered unto them by my said Executors when and so soon as they shall severally and respectively have attained their respective Ages of twenty one years
But in case either of them the said Samuel Brown and John Brown Sons of the before named
Samuel Brown and Elizabeth his Wife shall happen to die before he shall have attained his
said age of twenty one Years Then I give and bequeath the part and Share of him so dying
unto the Survivor of them the said Samuel Brown and John Brown (Sons of the before named
Samuel Brown and Elizabeth his Wife)
And in case of the death of both of them the said Samuel Brown and John Brown (Sons of the before named Samuel Brown and Elizabeth his
Wife) before they shall have attained their said several and respective ages of twenty one years Then and in such
case I give and bequeath the whole of all the rest residue and remainder of my said Personal Estate
unto and among the said Sarah Penn Brown, Eleanor Penn Brown, Elizabeth Charlotte Brown and
Angelica Randall Brown the said four Daughters of the said Samuel Brown and Elizabeth his Wife
or such of them as shall be then living equally to be parted and divided between them shre and share alike
I will that my said Executors or their Executors or Administrators or the Executors or Administrators of any or either of them shall not be answerable or accountable for any sum or sums of Money whatsoever other than such sum or sums of Money which he or they respectively shall respectively and actually receive by Virtue of this my Will or with or for any Loss or Losses which shall or may happen of my said Personal Estate or any part thereof or of the Dividends Interest Proceed and Profits of any Money to be by them or any or either of them put and placed out at Interest in pursuance of this my Will or any part of such Monies or of any or either of them or of any part thereof so as such Loss or Loss happen without his their or any of their wilful default or negligence nor shall one of them be answerable or accountable for the other or others of them or for the Acts Deeds Receipts or Defaults of the other or others of them but each of them for himself and for own Acts Deeds Receipts and Defaults only
And I do hereby further Will and direct that it shall and may be lawful to and for my said Executors and each and every of them and the Executors and Administrators of each and every if them un the first place by and out of my said Personal Estate or the Dividends Interest proceed and profits thereof or any part thereof to deduct retain repay and reimburse him and themselves for all and very such sum and sums of Money Loss Costs Charges Trouble Damages and Expences which they or any or either of them shall and may sustain Expend bestow or be put unto or obliged to pay for or on account or by reason or means of this my Will or of the Trusts hereby in them reposed or the management and Execution thereof respectively or any other thing in any wise immediately relating thereunto
And lastly I hereby revoke and make void all former and other Will and Wills and other
Testamentary Dispositions by me at any time heretofore made and do declare this only to be my last
Will and Testament contained in nine Sheets of paper set and affixed my Hand and Seal to the last
Sheet thereof and Subscribed my name at the bottom of each of the other Sheets thereof this second
day of September in the Sixteenth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the
Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King defender of the Faith etc. and in the year of
our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy six

This Will was proved at London the fifteenth day of May in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy seven before the Worshipful Andrew Coltee Duracel Doctor of Laws and Surrogate of the Right Worshipful Sir George Hay Knight also doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the Oaths of George Evans Baker and Samuel Brown Esquires two of the Executors named in the said Will to whom Administration was granted of all and singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the deceased they having been first sworn duly to administer Power reserved of making the like grant to William Wood Esquire the other Executor named in the said Will when he shall apply for the same
