Introduction
This index is based on information from one film covering order papers from July 1788
to April 1804. Quarter Sessions for West Kent were held at Maidstone every quarter in
January, April, July and October. There are 4636 entries.
The index has seven fields, not all visible on screen at once. They are Surname,
Forename, Year, Place, Type of Record, Comment and Folio(s).
The place may refer to residence or be a location associated with the type of record, for example,
fees for bridge repairs or highway diversions. In bastardy cases the place is usually the place
of birth of the child. Some places are hundreds rather than parishes. A list of the
Hundreds of West Kent shows approximately which parishes they
contain. Some parishes may be partly in more than one hundred.
In bastardy cases, the names given are the names of the parents. The name of the child is not given although the sex usually is.
Additional information may exist in Sessions Papers.
With the year and folio you can look up the date of the session.
