Nancy Fernandoz Crow was born on 10 October 1895 at Marthaville, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, Marthaville is a small town in the northwestern corner of Natchitoches Parish, LA about 10 miles north of the town of Robeline.4 She was the daughter of William Thomas Crow and Lola Victor Mims.2,3 Melvin David Holt, Sr. and Nancy Fernandoz Crow received a marriage license May 16, 1914 at the Natchitoches Parish Courthouse in Natchitoches, Natchitoches Parish, LA.5 Nancy Fernandoz Crow married Melvin David Holt Sr., son of John Jefferson Holt and Lettie Hall, on 17 May 1914 at Shamrock, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, She was the daughter of William Thomas Crow and Lola Victor Mims.6,4 Nancy Fernandoz Crow died on 20 October 1970. At age 75 The cause of death was given as Hypatic Failure due to or as a consequence of Biliary Cirrhosis due to or as a consequence of Chikedocholithiosos, Other significant conditions were Arrteriosclerotic Heart Disease, The death certificate was signed by Dr, Roy A. Cook, her family doctor, Dr. W. W. Knipmeyer, the Natchitoches Parish Health Officer and J. H. Blanchard of the Blanchard Funeral Home.7 Nancy was buried October 22, 1970 in the Lamberttown Cemetery at Shamrock, Natchitoches Parish, LA.8
Nancy Crow's nickname was "Nannie."; Nannie was the name my daddy called my mama and the name she usually went by.9 Mama was the spiritual inspiration for our family. From her we learned how to trust in God regardless of the circumstances of life. She lost three of her sons at young ages in very tragic ways. James was trying to give her his coat as he leaned out the window of the school bus. The driver did not see him, started off, and the head of James struck a tree. He bled to death on his mama's lap on the way to the doctor. Junior died of Spinal Meningitus contacted from an ear ache. Roy took two long years to die of Encephalitus. Through it all her faith remained strong and she knows she was able to get through these experiences because she was surrounded and upheld by the love of God. She loved the Methodist Church and she was so thrilled when her youngest son, Ray, made the decision for full-time ministry in the church. She loved her Melvin and each one of her children. She is remembered with love by her sons and daughters and her grandchildren.
Mama was a staunch Methodist all her life. She united with the Methodist Episcopal Church which became The Methodist Church in 1939 and The Unitec Methodist Church in 1968. While we were children growing up near Robeline we were members of the Congregational Methodist Church. There was no church in our neighborhood until Mama and Mrs. Maude Freeman decided we needed one. It was easier to establish a Congregational Methodist Church than a Methodist Church so the Congregational Methodists were invited to begin a church that became the Hickory Grove Congregational Methodist Church. It was in that church that I first discovered the power of God's love to save. When we moved to Coushatta in 1950 we became members of the Carroll Creek Methiodist Church. It was there that I received my calling into the Ministry of the church.10

He only completed the seventh grade in his formal education. He was, however, a "well educated" man, especially when it came to mathematics. In his chosen vocation of lumberman he had to be good at Mathematics. Elizabeth Jones Holt, his daughter-in-law was a college graduate in education with a focus on mathematics, but Daddy could add up figures faster in his head than she could put them on paper. He could look at a pine tree and tell you almost exactly how many board feet of lumber he could get out of it. He was also a loving family man. He loved his "Nannie" and he loved each one of his children. He was a hard worker and he provided for the needs of his family. He was not as involved in our religious training in the early years, but he supported our mama in her desire to raise us in the church. In his later years he became a devoted member of the church and his faith only became stronger as he grew older. He is remembered with love by all of his children and grandchildren, and also by the host of friends he had made over the years.10

Marshall Alexander Sanford was born on 1 January 1838 at Wilson County, Tennessee.3 He was the son of James Sanford (Samford) and Jane G. Martin.1,2 Marshall Alexander Sanford married Ann Elizabeth Bowman, daughter of George Owen Bowman and Nancy Penelope Carter, on 25 November 1865 at Conyersville, Henry County, Tennessee.4 Marshall Alexander Sanford died circa 1912 at Conyersville, Henry County, Tennessee.3
The Us 1860 listed Marshall Alexander Sanford in addition to Jane G. Martin, Sarah Caroline Sanford (Samford), Harriet Amanda Sanford (Samford), Lavisa Sanford (Samford), Lois Mildred Sanford (Samford), Lucy White Sanford (Samford) and Rufus Sanford (Samford) in the household of James Sanford (Samford), in District 14, Henry County, Tennessee.5 Marshall Alexander Sanford served in theRevolutionary War between 1861 and 1865 I don't know what the nature of his wounds were, but he came home with disabilities that eventually seperated him from his wife and children as they left him in Tennessee and immigrated to Central Texas, in the Josua area south of Fort Worth where Ann Elizabeth had brothers who had immigrated earlier.6 He served in Company G 5th. Tennessee Infantry as a Private and was wounded in the leg. The ball was never removed. He received a medical discharge for seizures following two battles. His grandson, Malcom Jones, was a Medical Doctor in World War II: He believes the seizures were caused by Cannon concussion.

The family Bible of James' parents listed the surname as SAMFORD; Marshall's Civil War Records all used SANFORD. The children with the middle name "WOOTEN" were named for Betty Bowman Sanford's ancestral surname. Lucius was also a handed down family name. Annie Sanford Jones (Marshall and Betty's daughter) named her twins Lucius, misspelled as Lucian, and Lenton, also a family name. Source of this paragraph is Ann Ruth Jones, granddaughter of Betty and Marshall, from oral records by Annie Sanford Jones. Also Samford Family Bible and Civil War Records.

Of the ten children born to Marshall and Betty, 5 were born and died in Tennessee and 5 were born in Tennessee and died in Texas. Of the 5 who came with Betty to Texas only 3, Annie, Johnnie, and Nola lived to adulthood, to marry and have children and the burial places for all except Sarelda Ann are unknown. Annie was buried in Caddo Cemetery, Joshua, Johnson County, Texas. Three of these Texans are buried in Union Hill Cemetery, Joshua, Johnson County, Texas, where Betty was eventually buried. The burial locations for Marshall and the children who died in Tennessee have not been located. Annie was the only one of the children to outlive Betty. The burial place for the children to die young in Texas is at Union Hill Cemetery, Joshua, Johnson County, Texas.
