Pedigree of Ray Holt
Reuben Holt was born on 30 January 1817 at Tennessee.6,5 He was the son of William Holt Jr. and Rhoda Powell.3,4,5 Reuben Holt married Catherine Ann Pierce, daughter of William Pierce and Sarah Nelson, on 18 November 1841 at Vowells Mill, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.7 Reuben Holt died on 12 July 1867 at Vowell's Mill, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, at age 50.8,9,10,11 +Reuben Holt was buried on 13 July 1867 at Old Cedron Cemetery, Vowell's Mill, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.10,12 His estate was probated on 25 April 1873 at Natchitoches, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.13
Reuben Holt purchased land on 3 January 1842 at Natchitoches, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.14 He purchased one slave on 15 November 1842 at Natchitoches Parish Courthouse, Natchitoches, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Reuben bought a slave at public auction at the courthouse in Natchitoches, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana as part of the Succession of the estate of John Litton. I believe that John Litton was the father-in-law of Reuben because in the 1850 census there is a Sarah Litton living in the household of Reuben. Ruben's spouse was Catherine Pierce, so Sarah must have been married to a "Pierce" before she married John Litton. I come to this conclusion because I cannot discover any reason why Sarah was in Reuben's household.15 Reuben Holt is head of household in the Us 1850 of Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Enumerated with Reuben Holt was Catherine Ann Pierce, Sarah Nelson, Julia Virginia Holt, Margaret Edna Holt, Charles Edwin Holt and Algorinia Holt.16 .17 Reuben Holt purchased land on 9 November 1859 at Natchitoches, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.18 He was not in the Although it apppears Reuben and Catherine moved to Vowell's Mill community before 1860, I can find no mention of him in the 1860 census. on 1 June 1860 at Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.19 In the book Records of LA Confederate Soldiers & LA Confederate Commands we read the following: "Holt, Reuben, Pvt. Co. B, Maddox's Regt. La. Reserve Corps. On Roll of Prisoners of War. Paroled at Natchitoches, LA June 1865. Res. Natchitoches, LA.20 There is conflicting evidence about the place of birth of Reuben as some say he was born in Utica, Hinds County, Mississippi.7 This information comes from the death certificate of John Jefferson Holt, the son of Reuben.21 It was given by Lettie Hall Holt, the widow of John Jefferson Holt, the son of Reuben. I would consider the Tennessee information most reliable as it is what Reuben himself said was his place of birth. While this is not proof he was born in Tennessee, as Reuben cannot bear personal witness to his place of birth, it is Reuben who would have received the information directly from his parents who were personal witnesses to the event. He was the son, and sixth child, born to William and Rhoda Powell Holt.5 Reuben is also mentioned in the probate of William's estate22, and there is a power of attorney on file in the Natchitoches Parish Courthouse in which Reuben declares his brother-in-law, George Jenkins of Vicksburg, Mississippi to be his representative in the distribution of his father's estate.23
Nothing is known about the early life of Reuben. It is believed that William Holt and Rhoda Powell were born in the State of North Carolina, were married in either North Carolina or South Carolina, migrated to Eastern Tennessee, and then traveled down the Natchez Trace to Hinds County, Mississippi where they settled in the vicinity of Utica in the southeastern tip of Hinds County. 5 We do know that William received a Federal Land Patent in 1826 in Hinds County24 and that he died there in 1836. 22 William is not in the 1820 census for Hinds County, but he is in the 1830 census as head of household. 25 Listed in the household are 2 males under 5 years of age, 1 male 10 to 15 years of age, 1 male 20 to 30, and 1 male 50 to 60 years of age. There are 1 female under five, 1 female 10 to 15, 2 females 15 to 20 and 1 female 40 to 50. 25If it is true that Reuben was born 30 Jan 1817 then he could be the 1 male 10 to 15 years of age.
In the 1840 census for Hinds County, there is a Rhoda Holt listed as head of household. In the household there is 1 male 5 to 10 years of age, 1 male 10 to 15 years of age, 1 male 15 to 20 years of age, and 1 male 20 to 30 years of age. There is 1 female under 5 year of age, 1 female 5 to 10 years of age, 1 female 20 to 30 years of age, and 1 female 60 to 70 years of age. Ag26ain, based on a birth date of 30 Jan 1817, Reuben could be the 1 male 20 to 30 years of age.
We do not know the exact date of Reuben's arrival in Louisiana. If he was the 20-30 year old male in the household of Rhoda Holt in the 1840 census of Hinds County, Mississippi, we can say that it was sometime between 1840 and 18 November 1841 when he and Catherine Pierce were married.26 I would speculate that he arrived in the latter half of 1840 which would give plenty of time for him to meet and court Catherine.27 The earliest official reference I can find of Reuben Holt in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana is an entry in the Index to Conveyances in Natchitoches Parish for the years 1800 to 1880. The index states that Reuben bought land from Thomas Gibson on January 13, 1842 for cash and the deed was supposedly recorded in Deed Book 34, Page 27.28 I could not find a copy of this deed in the Deed Book specified. There is another entry in the index book that states Reuben bought land from Elizabeth G. Corzine on June 14, 1842 for cash and this deed was recorded in Deed Book 31, Page 176. 17 The pertinent part of the deed reads: Elizabeth G. Corzine to Reuben Holt: Sale of land for $300.00 S « of NW ¬ of Sec 19 in Twp. 10, R 10 consisting of 40 48/100 acres more or less. The witnesses were
Benjamin B. Fisher and William Ferguson. There is a note in the margin reading: Original taken by me on this 6th. day of August, 1842. This land was located in the northwestern corner of Natchitoches Parish near the town of present day Marthaville in what is known as the Jennings Chapel community.
29 In the 1850 Federal Census for Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana we find Reuben Holt as being 33 years of age, a farmer owning real estate valued at $400 and born in the State of Tennessee. Others enumerated in his household were Catherine, age 24; Margaret, age 8; Charles, age 6; Julia, age 4; Algerina, age 2, and Sara Litton, age 48. 30Sara Litton must have been the widow of John Litton. I believe that she was also the mother of Catherine Pierce, the spouse of Reuben Holt. If this is so, then John Litton would have been her second marriage.
27 On 9 November 1859 Reuben purchased the following land from Mrs. Bartlett Fleming, et. al: the SE quarter of Sec. 32, Twp. 11, R 11 containing 160 acres. This land is northeast of the present day town of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana in Sabine, Parish and slightly northwest of the Jennings Chapel Community. I also have copies of three land patents issued by the Federal Government through the Register of the Land Office at Natchitoches, Louisiana. The first, certificate No. 13079, signed on behalf of President James Buchanan and dated 2 April 1860, states that Reuben paid full payment for the Northeast quarter of the Southwest quarter of Section thirty three in Township ten of Range ten and the Northeast quarter of the Northeast quarter of Section 5 in Township nine of Range ten ...containing eithty acres and and thirty one hundredth of an acre. The second, certificate No. 14382, signed on behalf of President James Buchanan and dated 1 June 1860, states that Reuben made full payment for the Southwest quarter of the Northwest quarter and the Southeast quarter of the Southwest quarter of Section thirty three, the Southeast quarter of the Northeast quarter of Section thirty two in Township ten of Range ten and the Northwest quarter of the Northeast quarter of Section 5 in Township nine of Range ten...containing one hundred and sixty acres and ninety hundredths of an acre. The third, certificate No. 17070, signed on behalf of President Abraham Lincoln on 1 April 1861, states that Reuben made full payment for the Northeast quarter of the Northeast quarter of Section thirty two in Township ten of Range ten...containing thirty nine acres and ninety hundredths of an acre. All of these patents are for land to the north of the present day town of
Marthaville, Louisiana in Natchitoches Parish. I've often wondered why his older children were born in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana in Sabine Parish. If you study a map you can see that he was much closer to Pleasant Hill than he was to Natchitoches. Marthaville did not exist as a town at that time. The land purchased from Mrs. Bartlett Fleming, et. al. is to the northeast of Pleasant Hill and northwest of the Jennings Chapel Community. According to Tommy Jennings the Holt homeplace was near the Fleming Family Cemetery located about 6 miles east of Marthaville, Louisiana. All of this land stayed in the family until it was sold during the probate of his estate in 1872
Sometime shortly before 1860 or during 1860 Reuben moved his family to Vowell's Mill in the southwestern part of Natchitoches Parish. Vowell's Mill is an extinct town a few miles south of the village of Provencal and east of the town of Many, the Parish seat of Sabine Parish. It was before 7 May 1860 because that is the birth date of John Jefferson Holt and he was born in Vowell's Mill. I have been unable to find the records of Reuben's purchase of land in the Vowell's Mill area. I did, however, discover a homestead certificate issued to John Jefferson Holt in 1901 for land in Vowell's Mill. According to Eliza Jane Holt Clark, the daughter of Reuben and the sister of John Jefferson, John continued to live on the Reuben Holt homestead. My speculation is that
Reuben had filed claim on the land and for some reason the patent was not issued. John Jefferson then applied for homestead rights which were granted 8 May 1901.
There is not much known about the life of the Reuben Holt family in either Jennings Chapel or Vowell's Mill. From the book History of Elijah and Eliza Jane Holt Clark written by A. V. Clark for distribution to the members of the Clark-Holt Reunion in 1984 and compiled and edited by Marilyn Clark Linde in 1999 we gain some insight into the life of Reuben and Catherine. When Reuben moved to Vowell's Mill, he owned « section of land, 320 acres and some slaves. After Reuben's death the land was given to Catherine. These were hard times for the family. Their wealth, which had been fairly large, had been destroyed by the war. There was a large family. Somehow she managed and each of the children was able to get at least some education. When Catherine died the land was divided among the children. Elijah Clark, the
son-in-law married to Eliza Jane, bought most of the east half and John Jefferson bought one half of the west half. This is evidently the land he received as a homestead in the Homestead certificate already cited. Eventually all the Holt heirs sold their rights to the land to Elijah Clark
and the land is still in the hands of Elijah's heirs.
Reuben purchased an old log house from someone and moved it on his land in Vowell's Mill and rebuilt it. He added a plank section on to it. It was a large house with a chimney at each end and had been used as a storehouse before the Civil War. There was plenty of room. The kitchen was about 30 feet away from the main part of the house for fire protection. In the kitchen there was a large chimney. One could put a 7-foot stick of wood in that fireplace and that was where the food was cooked.
Reuben evidently was in the militia of the Confederate Army during the Civil War as Private Reuben Holt, Co. B, Maddox's Regt. La. Reserve Corps. He was 44 years old when the war began, so I doubt that he was involved in much fighting. I do suspect that he was called up in 1865 when General Banks came up the Red River and invaded northwest Louisiana. The last major battle of the Civil War was fought at Mansfield, Louisiana which ended in a defeat for General Banks' army. Reuben was evidently captured during the battle as he is listed on a roll of Prisoners of War paroled at Natchitoches, LA in June of 1865. He died 12 July 1867 in Vowell's Mill. I do not know the cause of his death, but it could have been the result of his war experience. . He might also have died of a broken heart as all of his wealth had disappeared and all he had worked for since his arrival in Louisiana was destroyed. He was fifty years, five
months and 13 days old when he died. I also wonder if he might have died of a heart attack. His father, William, was only about 51 years old when he died. I don't know if John Jefferson had heart problems or not as he was killed in a sawmill accident at the age of 60. My Dad, Melvin David, the son of John Jefferson, had a major heart attack in his early sixties. I have had by-pass surgery twice and several heart attacks in addition to angioplasties and stents. Four of my sisters have heart disease. Perhaps it's just in our genes. Reuben is buried in Old Cedron Cemetery in Vowell's Mill.
While there is not too much personal information concerning Reuben Holt, his legacy is alive and growing. He and Catherine were the parents of thirteen children, eleven of whom grew into adulthood, married and had children of their own. They had six sons and seven daughters. They were as follows: 1)Margaret Edna (born 12 May 1842, died 8 Nov 1882) who married first John G. Carmichael by whom she had three children, and second Pleasant Alexander Barnhill by whom she had eight children; 2)Charles Edwin (born 16 September 1844, died 7 April 1929) who married first Alice Stone, and second Eliza Jane Scarbrough; 3)Sarah V. (born 11 February 1845, died 3 October 1848); 4)Julia Virginia (born 9 December 1846, died 16 December 1902) who married Patrick McCann by whom she had ten children; 5)Algirinia Rena (born 11 December 1848, died 15 March 1939) who married John Jefferson Wagley by whom she had fourteen children; 6)Mary Elizabeth (born 18 December 1850, died 15 December 1862); 7)James Rufus (born 1 June 1852, died 24 February 1916) who married first Sarah Williams by whom he had three children, and second Lula Henrietta Lester by whom he had no children; 8)Eliza Jane (born 22 March 1834, died 22 December 1950) who married Elijah Augustin Clark by whom she had sixteen children; 9)William Travis (born 31 December 1855, died 19 January 1927) who married first Clarissa Fox by whom he had no children, and second Victoria Ann Lester by who he had eight children; 10)Emma Catherine (born 27 July 1858, died 12 May 1936) who married John Massey by whom she had five children; 11)John Jefferson (born 7 May 1860, died 27 May 1920) who married Lettie Hall by whom he had eleven children; 12)Washington Kelly (born 4 January 1862, died 9 October 1935) who married Isabella Lester by whom he had seven children; and 13) Reuben Lewis (born 23 June 1866, died 5 August 1888) who married Martha Davis by whom he had two children.
From this large family has come a host of descendants. From a little unknown place in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana called Vowell's Mill they have spread all across the United States and to other countries. From their progeny have come doctors, lawyers, pastors, engineers, teachers, soldiers, farmers, and many other professions. They have made their contribution to the growth of this nation and they are still doing so. The descendants of Reuben and Catherine served and are serving with distinction in all of the conflicts this country has been involved in this century and then have returned to take their places in the lives of the communi-
ties in which they raised and are raising their children. They have been active in their churches and in various civic organizations. They have volunteered their time, talents and possessions in many worthy causes. In other words, they have been good citizens of these United States of America. They have been among those who, mostly without calling attention to themselves, have worked to make this country great. Reuben and Catherine left a good heritage and their children, grand children, and now the multi-great grandchildren have taken advantage of that heritage. Those of the present generation are challenged to continue that heritage that this nation might truly be one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all. Someone has said
that parents can be judged through their children. Looking at the children who have descended from the union of Reuben and Catherine Holt, I think the verdict is in. Their life was not in
vain. Their children bring honor to their name.      Zadock Harman was born in 1744 at Lewes Town, Sussex county, DE. He married Elizabeth Clark circa 1762 at Lewes town, Sussex County, DE. There is a chapter devoted to Zadock Harman in the book The Trader-Merchants: The Black People, Free & Slavewritten by E. russ Williams, Jr., former head of the history department at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA for the Monroe-Ouachita Valley Bicennial Commission. It relates that Zadock was a mulatto who was born in Sussex County, DE, migrated to the French Broad River in Burke County, NC./ A humurous story recounted by Williams is that Zadock was a horse theif who stole horses from the whites and sold them to the Indians and then stole them back from the Indians and resold them to the whites. They both found out what he was doing and the Indians tried to take his scalp while the whites were threatening to hang him. He decided he had outlived his welcome in that place and migrated to the settlement of Fort Miro in the Ouachita Valley and settled along Bayou DeSiard. This area is now part of the city of Monroe, LA. He became a protege of Governor Fihiol and apparently did quite well. He did so well, in fact, that he invited the envy of his white neighbors who made several complaints against him to Fihiol who rejected them all. In 1807 he is in the Nacodoches area of the Spanish Province of Texas and was one of the original settlers in the La Trinidad de Salcedo settlement along the Trinity River sourthwest of Nacadoches. His son, Warner, remained in Ouachita and died there after 1810 after the area became a part of the State of Louisiana in the United States of America. It is believed that Zadock returned to Louisiana and is the old man listed in the 1820 census of Natchitoches Parish as a member of the household of Elizha Nelson, his son-in-law. There is a reference to Zadock Harman in The American State Papers Vol. 2, page 833. It is in Document B 1120 of July 10, 1811. Zadock is the person under whom the land was claimed and Patrick Poor is the man in whose favor the land certificate was returned. The Nature of the claim is given as Order of survey and occupancy, the County is Ouachita on Bayou DeSiard. The number of acres is 406.21. I interpret this to mean that Patrick Poor took possession of the land by right of occupancy, which must mean that Zadock had not lived on the property for a length of time.3,4
