     Very likely that the Alexanders were originally from Scotland. Many Scotish Presbyterians l eft Scotland due to religious persecution between 1610 and 1688. Seven Alexander brothers im migrated to Manhattan, NY in 1688. Some remained there and others settled in Cecil Co, MD an d Pennsylvania. Later many Alexanders moved to Catawha Co, NC, including Abraham Alexander o f Mecklenburg. He apparently was born in Cecil Co, MD around 1717 and died in Mecklenburg Co , NC on 28 Apr 1778. Abraham was was one of the original signers of the Mecklenburg Declarat ion of Independence from Great Britain, said to have been written on 20 May 1775. Abraham wa s for many years an elder of Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church and was prominent in politics al so. Abraham and Dorcas (died 28 May 1778) had five sons and one daughter: Abraham, Isaac, N athaniel, Elias, Joab and Elizabeth. Elizabeth married William Alexander, son of Hezekiah Al exander. (Abraham, Adam, Charles and Ezra Alexander were the cousins of Hezekiah and John Mc Knitt Alexander - from Dr. G. W. Graham's book on the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence .) Abraham Jr. was the father of Alfred Alexander of Pulaski Co, KY.²

I James Hargis of the county of Pulaski & state of Kentucky, for, and in
consideration of the Regard, good will, and esteem, I have, and do
entertain of Randal Alexander & Elizabeth Alexander, children of William
Alexander, of the county and State aforesaid, have, and by their presents,
do give grant alienate & conform unto the said Randal Alexander & Elizabeth
Alexander all the following property, to wit; One Roan Horse, one mans
saddle, one cupboard, two feather beds and furniture, one ten gallon
Kettle, one four gallon kettle, one oven one skillet, eleven pewter plates,
one pewter dish and on pewter bason & six delf plates, all of which
property I purchased at a constables sale under an execution in favor of
James & Thomas Hargis against William Alexander
the claim of every other person or persons whomsoever unto the said Randal
Alexander & Elizabeth Alexander & their Heirs forever.
In Testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand and affix my seal this eighth
day of May A. D. 1820.

I William Hargis of the County of Pulaski and State of Kentucky do make
Ordain and declare the following as and for my Last Will and Testament
hereby revoking and Annulling all former and Other Wills by me heretofore
made. I give and bequeath unto my wife Rachel all my Estate both Real and
personal during her natural life then if Elizabeth my daughter Should out
live her Mother I give to her one Bed and Sufficient Bed Clothing, and
remainder of Beds and bed Clothing to Sold at public Sale together with all
my personal property And the money to be Equally divided Among my Children
To as to make them equal. And if Rachel ____ my daughter Should Out live
Elizabeth and takes Care of Elizabeth I will her Rachel one half of my land
for her Services. If ____ and the other ___ _____ half to be Sold and the
proceeds of it to be Equally divided among my heirs. I do nominate
Constitute and appoint my Son George Hargis my Sole Executor of this my
last Will & Testament revoking all other wills and Ratifying this
