The Hargis' I have listed as possibly children of John & Jane are William
b. 1779 m. Rachel Mease, Chloe b. 1782 m. James Adkins, Abraham b. c1784 m.
Susannah Price, Sarah b. 1787 m. Daniel Stogsdill, Thomas b. 1791 m. Naomi
Barnes, John b. 9 Jan. 1792 m. Sabra Morgan, & James b. 1794 m. Mary Brinson.

The only ones I feel that I have sufficient proof of are Sarah "Sary" &
Thomas (if the name Jean is used interchangably w/Jane), because Jane names
them as her daughter & son when she gives consent for their marriages.
Though Jane/Jean gives her consent for Chloe's marriage to James Adkins,
she does not name her as her daughter. Though I haven't really worked on my
Hargis line for a couple of years, I believe that I listed the others as
children of John & Jane with only circumstantial evidence, with the
evidence of James being the strongest (belonging to the same church,
traveling to Mo. with Daniel & Sarah, etc). I have not been able to find
any other Hargis' that early in Pulaski County as possible parents except
for the following which I have never been able to connect with Jane.

Grace Elizabeth Culp was born on 4 August 1886 at Denton, Doniphen County, Kansas.1 She was the daughter of Cornelius Mace Culp and Cynthia Hargis.1 Grace Elizabeth Culp married George A Roberts.1 Grace Elizabeth Culp died on 17 October 1947 at North Little Rock, Arkansas, at age 61.1
Grace Elizabeth Culp had her only child out of wedlock. She was livingat home with her mothe r in Denton, KA. Her mother, Cynthia ElizabethHargis Culp, was a single mother with three ch ildren to raise after herhusband left her. She ran a boarding house for railroad workers an d tookin laundry. Grace had grown up with and loved a young man whose familyowned the bank o f Denton. They had every intention of getting marrieduntil his mother learned about it and t old him he could not marry thedaughter of the town washer woman and retain his inherited plac e in thefamily bank. After nine months of promises from him, whose name wasGeorge Roberts, h e came over to her mothers house to be with her duringher labor and subsequent delivery o f a baby girl and cried and promisedthey would marry in spite of his mother. After Grace rec overed from thedelivery, he told her he could not marry her. After awhile, Grace suedGeorg e for child support. He claimed paternity for Irene, Gave her hisname on her birth certifica te when she was born, and paid Grace $2000 tomaintain the baby. A boarder in her mothers hom e became very attached toIrene. He also had been present at her birth and loved her and herm other from the start. He asked Grace to marry him and he would be afather to Irene if she pr omised never to tell Irene or anyone else thatshe was not his. Grace agreed and when Irene w as two years old theymarried and moved to Van Buren AR. Irene did not know Edward Powell was not her father, and she went by the name of Irene Powell all her life.EdwardPowell did not ad opt her altho he wished to, because he didn't wantanyone to know she wasn't his.

When Irene was about 35 years old and living in New Orleans, her husband,Paul Stuart worked f or the Upjohn Company. The Company was instituting anew insurance health care program for it s employees and asked for birthcertificates for all employees and families. Irene asked he r motherGrace where her birth certificate was and Grace took her over to the parkand explaine d to her that the name on her birth certificate was not theone she thought was hers. She exp lained to her what had happened. Irenewas stunned. She remembered a man, when she would vis it her grandmother, that was always very nice to her and took her for rides in his buggy butsh e thought he was a friend of her grandmothers. She also hadmysteriously recieved gifts suc h as a piano, from time to time that shedidn't question but later knew her father couldn't ha ve afforded. Hermother told her that she and George Roberts had loved each other alltheir li ves but his mother was adamant about him marrying her and hewasn't strong enough to give up t he bank and make it on his own. It wasa very sad story. George Roberts saw a lot of Irene u ntil she was twoyears old and moved away and I'm sure he became attached to her.

On the other side of this story, George Roberts became the president ofthe bank, which he ra n all his adult life, married and had a family andlived in Denton, KA. His family were alway s aware of the story aseveryone in Denton knew about it and teased George when he was young.H is son says he would leave the family for long periods of time and theyknew he was off to se e Irene and they resented it. He never made himselfknown to Irene but apparently watcher he r from afar and visited Grace andalso attended Irene's wedding. She also inherited a famil y ring from himthat she thought belonged to her mother.

I only learned of this story about my mother when I was about 35 yearsold and started to do s ome research on my family lines. She and her AuntNell would not tell me things I wanted to k now and finally several yearsafter being ignored, my mother told me the whole thing. I wen t up toDenton one day and walked into the bank and asked to see Mr. Roberts -who was the so n of George, George having died of cancer some years before- and the son, Tom, took me into h is office and gave me a whole file ofpapers to read. He knew the story of course but I didn' t know he knew itand I had a hard time telling him what I wanted. He said later he knewwh o I was when I came into the bank and had expected to hear from someonein Irene's family at s ome time. He did not know that we did not know anyof this story. He invited me to stay wit h he and his wife, which I did,and I looked at the papers and all the pictures he had and h e took mearound to the cemeteries to see all the family grave sites and get datesfrom them. H e told me he was aware his father had never loved hismother. He felt it had been his fathers ' fault for being so weak and ithad affected his family. George had left nothing to Irene i n his willand had named her in his will. I guess the Roberts family thought atfirst that Ire ne wanted to claim her share. However, when they found outwe weren't interested, they opene d up and I have enjoyed knowing them. Ilook a lot like their side of the family.

Irene did go up to Denton in about 1954 - just before George became sick- to meet her fathe r and ask him why he did what he did to her and to hermother and when she sat down in his off ice, he told her she looked justlike her mother and that he did love her and her mother and a t that pointMother broke down in tears and had to leave. She never went back to seehim and h e died shortly after that.

Irene suffered from the label attached to her even tho no one knew ofit. Kansas was the firs t state ot leave the word "illigitimate" off ofthe birth certificates before she was born. T hat's the reason she wouldnever tell us this story and after she told me, made me promise no t totell the grandchildren or anyone else until she was dead.

Since Geneology is a direct bloodline study,I thought the truth shouldbe told. Since decend ents of Irene would be descended from the Robertsline, instead of the Powell line, I decide d to include her story as shetold it to me.

There is quite a bit of info on the Hargis family in the Pulaski historical Society. I am re asonably sure that you must know that Samuel Bailey Hargis was the son of Susanna Price and A braham Hargis. The Abraham Hargis place bordered Whetstone Creek, about 2 miles east of Buc k Creek. Sam Bailey Hargis brother was James Madison Hargis who was the grandfather of Flonni e Bray. This was proved by a deed in which James Madison gave his daughter Victoria and her hu sband Matt Phelps( Flonnie Bray's Mom and Dad) a parcel of land
My greatuncle William R Bob Sears owned a portion of this place and now my dad's double fi rst cousins, Carl and Seldon Hail own the major part of the Matt Phelps place. The Uncle Bo b portion of the place interestingly enough is owned by Harold Hargis, CM "Mit Hargis' grands on. I think he and his brother Howard own the bulk of the Abraham Hargis place.
As a child I remember seeing James Madison Hargis daughter, Amanda Alexander. I went t o church with Amanda Hargis Alexander's children and grandchildren. Her grandaughter Lois Ale xander Taylor has a big picture of Jim Matt Hargis. At one time she had a hog rifle whose sto ck he had made from curly maple. He had bought the works for it in Nashville, when he had flo ated a load of coal down the Rockcastle River to the Cumberland and then on down to Nashville . He then walked back believe it or not. Itook six weeks! Sadly the Taylors were burglarize d in the early 90's and the gun is gone They still have a picture though.
