Paul Allen Stuart1

M, #14898, b. 5 March 1905, d. 28 October 1993
Paul Allen Stuart was born on 5 March 1905 at Dalark, Arkansas.1 He married Nellie Irene Roberts, daughter of George A Roberts and Grace Elizabeth Culp, on 25 August 1926 at North Little Rock, Arkansas.1 Paul Allen Stuart died on 28 October 1993 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at age 88.1
Paul Allen Stuart was a registered Pharmacist, graduating from theUniversity of Arkansas. Hi s parents were divorced when he was about 18months old. It was a long and bitter custody bat tle. His mother woncustody but finally his father had to go to court to get visitationrights . Paul's grandfather, Moritz Ohls, would not let his father cometo see him and they would hi de Paul every time Allie drove the 6 miles toDalark to see him. Finally, the judge ordered b oth parents to drive the35 miles to Fordache, which was the county seat, and his courtroom ev eryThursday afternoon so Allie could have a few hours with his son byhimself in the Judges' c hambers. This went on until Paul was 6 years oldand his mother had remarried and moved to No rth Little Rock, AR. Paulworked in his grandfather Ohls general merchandise store as soon a s hewas old enough to run errands and sweep the floor. They had big barrelsof molasses up o n sawhorses in the storeroom of the store and one dayPaul opened the spigot on the barrel (af ter he had been told to leave italone). When he couldn't get the spigot to close again, he j ust ran offand hid rather than tell anyone because he was afraid of hisgrandfather. It was n ot discovered until all the molasses had run out onthe floor. His grandfather went looking f or him and when he found him,he didn't chastise him, only made him clean it all up all by him self.Paul said it took him hours to clean up. His grandmother never learnedto speak much Eng lish and she spoke it very brokenly. One day he mockedher (this was just before Christmas Da y) and so when Christmas Dayarrived, everyone received presents but Paul only received a sac k ofashes and switches. He moped around all day but wouldn't cry, andfinally late in the eve ning they gave him his presents.

His grandfather would pay him a dollar for working in the store as hegrew older until he lear ned that Paul's stepfather was taking his money.Paul had gotten a job at Argenta Drugs in Nor th Little Rock makingdeliveries on his bicycle and had several dollars saved when hisstepfath er came in one day and took all his money. After that, GrampaOhls tore his dollar bills in h alf and gave Paul one half and he kept theother. When Paul grew up and wanted to go to colle ge, Grampa Ohls gavehim all his torn up dollars and Paul had enough to start college. Hisfat her helped him as much as possible and Mr. Poch, at Argenta Drugs, influenced him to take up p harmacy. He worked for Mr. Poch for manyyears and they had a very special relationship Aft er Paul and Irenewere married, Paul was approached by Upjohn Company to come to work forthem . Mr. Poch encouraged him to do so even tho it meant losing him fromhis own employment. H e felt he had a future there with his growingfamily. Paul worked for 22 years for Upjohn mov ing to Newport, AR ;Bryan, TX; Alexandria, LA; New Orleans LA, Twice; Natchez, Miss; McComb,M iss; Memphis, Tenn and Birmingham, AL. While in Birmingham, he wastransferred to Kalamazoo Mi ch. when his family became upset at having tomove again. Martha Nell had just entered colleg e and Bobbie had justentered Highschool. He bought a drugstore instead and stayed there fo r 6years, through WW11. After retiring, he moved back to North Little Rockwhere he opene d a drug store with his younger half brother for a brieftime. After that, he worked for frie nds in different stores around thecity on a part time basis. During his 80th year, the Unive risty ofArkansas conferred on him an honorary PHD in Pharmacy for his many yearsof service t o that profession. He saw many changes in his liftime, fromhorse and buggy to a man walkin g on the moon. He was a man of highprincipals and honor and a wonderful husband and father.

Linah acquired 358 acres on Lickinghole Creek and sold it to David Mims on April 17, 1733. It appears that neither he nor the witnesses to the transaction could write as they all signed the document with their mark. This says something about the educational opportunities available at the time.
We should also note the different spellings of his first name. It is spelled as Lionel, Lineal, and even as Sioul in various documents. By 1811 the spelling settled on is Linah.5
