D. Crow and Nancy Roberts.2,3 William Thomas Crow married Lola Victor Mims on 13 April 1887 at Home of J. J. Mims, near Robeline, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, According to the wedding certificate, a copy of which is in possession of Rev. Melvin Ray Holt, Sr., a grandson of Tom and Lola, the wedding took place in the home of Josiah Jackson and Lacero Martin Mims, the parents of Lola. The minister was Rev. Lilly and the witnes was John Fisher.7,5,8,9 William Thomas Crow died on 26 April 1947 at Home of Melvin and Nannie Holt, Robeline, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, at age 86.10 He was buried after 26 April 1947 at Lambertown Cemetery, Shamrock, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.11
William Thomas' nickname was "Tom."; Everybody who knew William Thomas called him Tom.12 The Us 1870 listed William Thomas Crow in addition to Joseph W. Gibson, Alice R. Gibson, James M. Gibson, Nancy Roberts, Fannie Augustus Gibson, Albert Bradford Crow and Margaret M. Crow in the household of John P. Gibson, in District # 8, Milo, Pike County, Alabama; John is a 57 year old white male, his occupation is farmer, the value of his real estate is $700.00, the value of his personal estate is $600.00, and he was born in Alabama.13 William Thomas Crow witnessed the purchase of land by Albert Elias Mims on 18 November 1904 at Robeline, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana; The description of the property as given in the conveyance deed is The NW 1/4 of NE 1/4 Section No. 2, Township 8, Range 10 containing forty acres more or less lying and situated in Sabine Parish, LA.14 William Thomas Crow resided on 28 January 1930 at Precient 1, Ward 5 near Marthaville, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, He was registered as a democrat for voting purposes. This is not surprising as his father, W. L. D., died as a prisoner of war in the Civil War. His occupation was given as farming. He had been living in Ward 5 since coving to Louisiana in 1879.15 Granddady never remarried after the death of Lola in 1917. From my earliest memories he lived in the home of my parents, Melvin and Nannie Crow Holt. We grandchildren used to love to hear him talk about this youth. I am so disappointed now that we never recorded those conversations.
Granddaddy never knew his daddy. He was born in June of 1860 and his daddy died as a prisoner of war during the Civil War. The family moved to the Palo Pinto area if Texas after his mother, Nancy, married Berry Lambert. I do remember him talking about being a cowboy near Weatherford, TX and coming down the Red River to Louisiana in 1879. He always love his Lola and he love his children and grandchildren.16

According to the 1860 census W. L. D. was born in Georgia. This is the only William Crow I can find in the right age range. .3 W. L. D. Crow married Nancy Roberts, daughter of Jesse Hancock Roberts and Margaret McCorkle, after 1852 at Georgia If the family tradition is correct and Nancy was the second marriage for W. L. D. then the date of the wedding would have to have been after 1852, when John was born, and 1855 when Margaret was born.1 W. L. D. Crow died on 2 February 1865 at Camp Chase Military Prison, Columbus, Ohio. He was captured at Nashville, TN December 16, 1864. He was transferred to Camp Chase where he died just short of two months later of pneumonia. We believe he contracted pneumonia from complications following measles.4,5 He was buried on 2 February 1865 at Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.4
     W. L. D. Crow is head of household in the Us 1850 of an unknown place I am not sure this is my W. L. D. Crow. The age range makes me think this is him.
.. Enumerated with W. L. D. Crow was Elizabeth Crow.3 W. L. D. Crow resided at Milo, Pike County, Alabama, in 1860 According to the 1860 census which was enumerated on July 20, 1860, W. L. D. Crow was living in Milo, Pike County, AL with his wife Nancy, and children: John C, Margaret, and Andrew B. William Thomas is not listed so the census must have been taken before his birth. W. L. D. lived house # 703 and was family # 710. He Real Estate valued at $960 and a Personal Estate valued at $895.

There is a deed dated February 17, 1860 on file on page 270 of Deed Book L in the Pike County Courthouse at Troy, AL stating that William Crow bought land from James McCaleb Wiley.1 He purchased land on 17 February 1860 at Pike County, Alabama, The land was purchased from James McCaleb and Cornelia A. Wiley and from Hugh R. and Sarah A. Segars for the sum of sixteen hundred and sixty six ($1666.00). It consisted of the north west quarter and west half of the norteast quarter and the west half of the southwest quarter and the west half of the southeast quarter in section nineteen, township eight and range twenty in Pike County.6 According to the 1860 census for Pike County, AL W. L. D. and Nancy were living at Milo, Pike County, AL on July 20, 1860 when the enumeration took place; According to the 1860 census which was enumerated on July 20, 1860, W. L. D. Crow was living in Milo, Pike County, AL with his wife Nancy, and children: John C, Margaret, and Andrew B.

There is a deed dated February 17, 1860 on file on page 270 of Deed Book L in the Pike County Courthouse at Troy, AL stating that William Crow bought land from James McCaleb Wiley.1 W. L. D. Crow is head of household in the Us 1860 of the Eastern Division, Milo, Pike County, Alabama W. L. D. is listed as a Farmer, age 36, born in Georgia, with Real Estate valued at $960.00, and with a personal estate valued at $895.00. The Crow family and the Roberts family -- Nancy's birth family -- were adjacent to each other. Also the youngest son seems to be given the name of Andrew B. The family Bible gives it as Albert B.. Enumerated with W. L. D. Crow was Nancy Roberts, John C. Crow, Margaret M. Crow and Albert Bradford Crow.1 W. L. D. Crow began military service on 12 February 1863 at Greenville, Butler County, Alabama, He was a private in Company A of the 57th. Alabama Infantry. He was recruited by Major C. J. L. Cunningham and enlisted for the duration of the war. The muster roll for July and August gives the Regiment as the 54th. Alabama Infantry Regiment and states that it later became Company A of the 57th. Among his service records is a special requisition made October 24, 1864 in Cuthbert, GA for a pair of pants and a pair of drawers. The requisition states: "This soldier being destitute of the above articles. The Surgeon-in-charge was D. H. Thomson and the Quartermaster was Major J. M. Thomson. It is signed by W. L. D. Crow.7 He ended military service on 2 February 1865 at Camp Chase, Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, His military career ended with his death in the Camp Chase Military Prison in present day Columbus, OH, the state capital of Ohio.8 A history of the 57th. Alabama Infantry Regiment in which W. L. D. Crow fought during the Civil War details some of the terrible battles that the unit was engaged in. It suffered some of the heaviest casualties of the Civil War. It was while he was engaged in battle near Nashville, TN. in November of 1864 that W. L. D. was captured. He was first carried to Louisville, KY and then transferred to Camp Chase, which is now a part of Columbus, Ohio, the state capital of Ohio. He died of Pneumonia while he was a prisoner there. My wife, Elizabeth, and I are the only members of our family, as far as I am aware, who have had the privilege of visiting his grave site. It is in a lovely location and is carefully maintained by the Historical Society of the State of Ohio. On a sign over the entrance to the Cemetery is the one word "Americans." I thank the people of Ohio for their sensitive recognition of the patriotism of these men, even though in retrospect we now know that their cause was a hopelessly flawed one. We their, descendents, can be proud of their bravery and dedication, even while we recognize that it would have been a tragedy if they had prevailed in that bloody conflict. It is time that we put the past completely behind us and as common American brothers and sisters work to make this the great nation we all desire for it.9

Nancy Roberts was born in 1834 at Georgia The census gives her age as 26, which would give her a birthdate of about 1834.1 She was the daughter of Jesse Hancock Roberts and Margaret McCorkle.2 Nancy Roberts married W. L. D. Crow after 1852 at Georgia If the family tradition is correct and Nancy was the second marriage for W. L. D. then the date of the wedding would have to have been after 1852, when John was born, and 1855 when Margaret was born.1 Nancy Roberts married John P. Gibson, son of Theodosia (?), on 7 October 1869 at Troy, Pike County, Alabama, The officiating minister was the Rev. J. J.Macon, minister of the Gospel.3,4,5 Nancy Roberts married Berry B. Lambert, son of Isaac Buck Lambert and Ellenor Thompson, on 2 May 1874 at Erath County, Texas, The ceremony was performed by M. J. Morton, L. M. One curiosity in the marriage license, which I located in the archives of Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Erath County, Texas, is that the marriage date given is earlier than the date on the issuing of the License itself. I speculate that M. J. Morton was a circuit riding minister who showed up before they had the license, so they went ahead and had their religious service. Afterwards they went to Stephenville, secured the license, and the next time Bro. Morton was back in the area he filled in the date of the service and then filed it the next time he was in Stephenville, which was 12 Feb. 1875.6,7,8 Nancy Roberts died in 1909 at Robeline, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.9 She was buried in 1909 at Central Baptist Church Cemetery, Robeline, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.9

The Crow family and the Roberts family -- Nancy's birth family -- were adjacent to each other. Also the youngest son seems to be given the name of Andrew B. The family Bible gives it as Albert B.1 Nancy Roberts resided at Milo, Pike County, Alabama, in 1870 Page 364 in the 1870 census for Pike County Alabama. In the 1870 census John and Nancy with their children were living in house number 22 in the Milo community. They had assests worth $700 and had real estate valued at $600.10 The Us 1870 listed Nancy Roberts in addition to Joseph W. Gibson, Alice R. Gibson, James M. Gibson, Fannie Augustus Gibson, Albert Bradford Crow, Margaret M. Crow and William Thomas Crow in the household of John P. Gibson, in District # 8, Milo, Pike County, Alabama; John is a 57 year old white male, his occupation is farmer, the value of his real estate is $700.00, the value of his personal estate is $600.00, and he was born in Alabama.11 Nancy Roberts and Berry B. resided at Grand Ranche, Palo Pinto County, Texas, in 1875 There is a certified letter return receipt on file in the probate records of Pike County, Alabama saying that Nancy and B. B. Lambert lived in the community of Grande Ranche, Texas which is no longer in existence. According to a letter I have received from the United States Postal Service in Washington, D.C., there was a Grande Ranche Post Office in Palo Pinto County, Texas. This Post Office was established on March 10, 1876 and was discontinued on February 1, 1881. Palo Pinto is the next county west of Parker County, of which the County Seat is Weatherford. Tom Crow, my granddaddy, used to talk about being a cowboy in Texas. Aaccording to the recollections of some of my siblings the family came down the Red River to Louisiana.
According to the recollections of some of the other siblings they traveled the road between Fort Gibson and Shreveport, Louisiana. I would think they probably used the wagon road. According to an article on Old Roads by Allen Ramsey in the book History of Palo Pinto County Texas, Grande Ranche was south of the present day community of Santo in southern Palo Pinto County, Texas.12,13 Nancy Roberts and Berry B. Lambert were Named in the record of the sale of Crow land in Pike County, Alabama to the eldest son of W. L. D. Crow and Nancy, John Crow, who evidently remained in Pike County, Alabama when the rest of the family leftfor Texas.Margaret Crow Lambert, Nancy and W. L. D.'s daughter, also signed the document. The witness was a man by the name of Isaac Taylor. The Justice of the Peace who executed the document in Palo Pinto County, Texas Precient 4 was William E. Wade. on 7 March 1877 at Justice of the Peace Office in Palo Pinto County, TX, Palo Pinto, Palo Pinto County, Texas.14 Nancy Roberts and Berry B.
