Jesse Hancock Roberts was born in 1799 at Person County, North Carolina.4,3,1 He was the son of John Arthur Roberts and Nancy Hargis.2,3 Jesse Hancock Roberts married Margaret McCorkle, daughter of (?) McCorkle, on 2 November 1825 at Lincoln County, Georgia..5 Jesse Hancock Roberts married Mary W. Whaley on 16 April 1871 at Pike County, Alabama.6,7 Jesse Hancock Roberts died on 7 June 1884 at Milo, Pike County, Alabama, The obituary in the Troy Enquirer of June 21. 1884 gives the date of his death as June 7, 1884. The record of deaths in Pike County from 1881 to 1892 published by the DAR gives it as June 8, 1884. The cause of death was the result of paralysis caused by a fall. The attending physician was C. M. Carlisle, M.D.4,2 He was buried after 7 June 1884 at Center Ridge Church Cemetery, east of Hwy. 87, South of Troy, AL near the Coffee County line, Pike County, Alabama.7

He enlisted in the Indian War, likely in 1836. It is not known just howlong he served. In the winter of 1821 he rode horse back from LincolnCounty, Georgia to his grandfather David Roberts home in Lowndes County,Alabama and lived with him during the year 1822. In the winter of 1822he returned to his home in Lincoln County, Georgia. In the winter of 1825he married the widow of William Spires of Lincoln County, Georgia, whosemaiden name was Margaret McCorkle. They moved to Monroe County, Georgiain 1827. The first husband of Jesse's wife (William Spires) drew a landpension for his service in the Indian War. This land was located in LeeCounty, Georgia. Jesse H. Roberts went down to Lee County in the year1828 to look after the land for his wife (Oglethorp was the county seatat that time.) He went down about twelve or fourteen miles south ofOglethorp to see the land. After locating and looking over the land, hewas making his return for home. He had not gone far when he met up withan Indian. He told the Indian about seeing some turkeys cross the road afew hundred yards back. The Indian reluctantly and likely some whatdoubtfully, passed on. Jesse had not gone far on his horse before a gunfired from behind, sending a bullet through the body of Jesse and hisright arm with which he was holding the bridle rein. The bullet lodgedin his sleeve. Jesse did not fall from his horse, but galloped away. Hesoon came to a small stream where he managed to get some water to drinkand dress his wound. After drinking the water he began to feel somebetter. He resumed his course and had not gone far before he met up withNathan Powell, who was the sheriff of Lee County at that time and toldhim about the incident. The sheriff saw to it that Jesse was cared for.Later Jesse named his son Nathan Powell Roberts for the sheriff. In theyear 1870 he moved from Monroe County, Georgia to Pike County, Alabamaand settled about one and one half miles west of Spring Hill (Milo PostOffice) and about eight miles south of Troy, Alabama. Here he lost hisfirst wife Margaret (the widow Spires) and later married a widow Whaley, who had two boys, Milzy and John and one daughter Nancy. He had nochildren by his last wife.

Living in Lincoln County, Graves Mil. Dis. when he won a land lottery in1821 in Monroe County, (#193/15 (15). Moved to Monroe County, before1830 and to Alabama after 1850 He is listed in the 1830, 1840, and 1850Monroe census living with his wife and children and in the Monroe TaxDigest in 1853 where he owned over 400 acres of land, four slaves and hada whole property worth $5985. He and his wife Margaret are listed in the1860 and 1870 Pike County, Alabama census. He was a farmer, who could notread with a value of real estate/personal of $1440/$7800 and $1000/$500.In 1860 he owned seven slaves living in one slave house. He is listed inthe 1880 census living with his second wife Mary W. He died of paralysisfrom a fall. He left no will but there are numerous probate records inbox 51 at the Pike County, courthouse listing his children and assets of$1000.5 In the winter of 1821, Jesse H. Roberts (son of Arthur roberts) rode horseback from Lincoln County, Georgia to his grandfathers (David Roberts) place in Lowndes County, Alabama and lived there during the year of 1822.8 He and Margaret McCorkle immigrated in 1827 to Monroe County, Georgia, from Lincoln County.8 This story comes from a letter written by James Monroe Roberts, as shared by James L. Roberts: The first husband of Jesse's wife (William Spires) drew a land pansion. The land was located in Lee County, GA. In 1928 Jesse made a trip there of look after the land on behalf of his wife. The County seat of the county of Lee was Oglethorp. The land was about 12 or 14 miles south of Oglethorp. After locating and looking over the land, Jesse began the journey back to his home in Monroe County. He had not gone far when he met an Indian on the trail. He told the Indian about seeing some turkeys across the road a few hundred yards back. The Indian reluctantly and likely some what doubtfully, passed on. Jesse had not gone far on his pony before a gun fired from behind, sending a bullet smashing through his body and the right arem which he was holding the bridle. The bullet lodged in his sleve. James Monroe states in the letter that he had seen the scar of the wound. Jesse did not fall from his horse and managed to escape. He soon cam to a small stream of water where he managed to get some water to drink. After drinking the water he felt better and resumed his journey. A short time later he me up with Nathan Powell who was sheriff of Lee County at that time and after whom Jesse's son, Nathan Powell Roberts, would be named. The letter does not state whether the Indian was captured or not.8 Jesse Hancock Roberts is head of household in the Us 1840 of Monroe County, Georgia. Enumerated with Jesse Hancock Roberts was.9 He and Margaret McCorkle immigrated after 1850 to Milo Community, Pike County, Alabama, from Monroe County.8 Jesse Hancock Roberts resided at Milo, Pike County, Alabama, in 1860 According to the 1860 Census of Milo, Pike County, Alabama (Eastern Division) page 102, line 18, J. H. lived next door to W.L.D. Crow and Nancy Roberts. According to the Troy Enquirer of June 21, 1884 of five sons four of them died during the civil war fighting for the confederacy. This would make five counting his son-in-law, W.L.D. Crow. Accoring to a record of deaths in Pike County from 1881 to 1892 (as published by the Pike County Historical Society) Jesse Roberts died on June 8th instead of June 7...he was born in Georgia, was age 86, was a farmer....died of paralysis from a fall...died and buried at Spring Hill cemetery. The above information was furnished by John P. Johnston of Troy, Alabama, whose uncle, Andrew Bryan, married Mildred Elizabeth Roberts, born in 1840 and died in Geneva County, AL, in 1927. Also according to the same above information, the year of Jesse's birth was 1798. I believe the information that he was born in GA is incorrect as, Martin de Vore, a ggg-grandson, confirms my own supposition that he was born in NC.1 Jesse Hancock Roberts is head of household in the Us 1860 of the eastern division, Milo, Pike County, Alabama J. H. Roberts is a 60 year old male and Margaret is a 60 year old female. His occupation is farmer; he has Real Estate valued at $1660.00 and a personal estate valued at $7800.00. His birthplace is given as North Carolina. Margaret's birthplace is given as Georgia. Enumerated with Jesse Hancock Roberts was Margaret McCorkle, Green S. Roberts, Mrs. A. A. Roberts, A. F. Roberts and Margaret Roberts.1 According to the 1870 census Jesse H. Roberts and Margaret were living in Milo, Pike County, AL; In the 1870 Census for Pike County, Alabama Jesse H. Roberts lived with his wife Margaret in house number 18 in the community of Milo, AL. He was a Farmer with $1,000 in asseset and a real estate valued at $500.00. He is listed as having been born in the state of North Carolina. He was 71 years of age at the time of the census. Margaret was 70 years of age at the time of the census and is listed as having been born in the state of Georgia.1 Jesse Hancock Roberts is head of household in the Us 1870 of Milo, Pike County, Alabama. Enumerated with Jesse Hancock Roberts was Margaret McCorkle.10 Jesse was living in Lincoln County, Graves Military District when he won a land lottery in 1821 in Monroe County, GA (193/15) the reference being the same as Arthur Roberts. He mosved to Monroe County before 1830 and to AL after 1850. He is listed in the 1830, 1840, and 1850 Monroe County censuses living with his wife and children and in the Monroe County Tax Digest in 1853 where he owned over 400 acres of land, four slaves and had a whole property worth of $5,985. He and his wife Margaret are listed in the 1860 and 1870 Pike County, AL censuses. In 1860 he was a farmer who could not read with a real estate valued at $1440 dollare and a personal valuation of $1000. He also owned seven slaves living in one slave house. In 1870 his real estate was valued at $7800 and his personal valuation was $500. He is listed in the 1880 census living with his second wife Mary W. He died without a will but there are numerous probate records in box 51 at the Pike County court house listing his children and assets of $1000.6

John Martin Sr.1,2

M, #398, b. between 1732 and 1734, d. after 1780

Relationship=4th great-grandfather of Rev. Melvin Ray Holt Sr..
Charts
Pedigree of Ray Holt
John Martin Sr. was born between 1732 and 1734 at County Antrim, Northern Ireland.1,3 He married Jane Hutchinson circa 1752 at County Antrim, Northern Ireland.4,1,3 John Martin Sr. died after 1780 probably in Jefferson County, GA Jefferson County was originally a part of St. George's Parish and, after Independence, a part of Burke County.5,1
John Martin Sr. and Jane Hutchinson emigrated in 1755 from County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Mollie Douglas Martin, a descendant who wrote one of the earlier histories of the Martin family, is probably right in her belief that John Martin, Sr., his wife Jane Hutchinson and their son John, Jr. came to the New World to escape the persecution Protestants were experiencing in their home country. Family tradition says the Martin family was of old Presbyterian faith and very firm in their beliefs. The New World offered new opportunities. The Martin family, like many others of the early settlers of the American colonies sought to find religious freedom on these shores. When John and Jane emigrated from North Ireland in 1755 they were coming to one of the newest of the colonies. It was establiehse in 1733 as a proprietary colony of General James Oglethorpe and was small in area, comprising only the tidewater lands between the Savannah and the Altamaha Rivers (including what are now Chatham, Bryan, Liberty, and McIntosh Counties and part of Effingham and Bulloch Counties), and had a small population estimated in 1753 at about 2,400. As a proprietary colony, General Oglethorpe selected the settlers. He established the city of Savannah and brought in settlers, mainly from the debtors' prisons of London, German Protestants, who settled in and aroung Savannah; and Highland Scots, who settled mainly along the Altamaha River. There was also some migration into the region from the New England region. In 1753 Georgia bcame a Royal Colony and restrictions on crops and trade and the importation of slaves were lifted. Immigragion both from Great Britian and the other American colonies increased. In 1761 the estimated population was 6, 000 whites and 3,500 blacks.4,6 John petitioned the Provincial Council of Georgia in July 1758 for 100 acres of land at Midway, setting forth the claim that he had been three years in the Province without obtaining any grant, wanted to cultivate land, and, if a grant was made to him, he would cultivate and improve the land. Along with several others, he received a grant of 100 acres December 1759. The land was located in St. Philip's Parish, north of Midway in what is now Bryan County.7,8 John Rae (Rhea) and George Galphin were land entrepreneurs who received the endorsement of the Royal Governor, Sir James Wright, to bring immigrants from North Ireland and settle them on land near the Ogeechee River in what was to be called the town of Queensboro. This town never developed but the town of Louisville did spring up and eventually became the county seat of Jefferson County. Between 1768 and 1773 four shiploads of immigrants from North Ireland arrived in Georgia and settled on the land. According to a family tradition recorded by Mollie Douglas Martin John Martin, Sr. became friends with Rae and Galphin and was able to secure land in the area. We know his family was there after the Revolutionary War and, in his will, John Martin, Jr., the oldest son of John Martin, Sr., left 400 acres in Jefferson County to his daughter, Margaret Jane. One tract of this land borderd on land owned by Alexander Carswell.9,10,11

Pedigree of Ray Holt
Jane Hutchinson was born circa 1734 at County Antrim, Northern Ireland.2,3,4 She married John Martin Sr. circa 1752 at County Antrim, Northern Ireland.2,5,6 Jane Hutchinson died after 1766 at probably in St. Philip's Parish, Georgia, The exact date of her death is unknown, but since her las child was born about 1766, we can safely say that her death was either on or after that date.2,7,4
Jane Hutchinson and John Martin Sr. emigrated in 1755 from County Antrim, Northern Ireland, Mollie Douglas Martin, a descendant who wrote one of the earlier histories of the Martin family, is probably right in her belief that John Martin, Sr., his wife Jane Hutchinson and their son John, Jr. came to the New World to escape the persecution Protestants were experiencing in their home country. In 1761 the estimated population was 6, 000 whites and 3,500 blacks.2,4

Pedigree of Ray Holt
James Patrick Martin was probably born circa 1758 at St. Phillip's Parish, Georgia, St. Philip's Parish was in what is now Bryan County, GA. The land was near the present day town of Midway.5,1 He was the son of John Martin Sr. and Jane Hutchinson.2,3,4 James Patrick Martin married Nancy McKenzie circa 1785 at Georgia.4 James Patrick Martin married Martha Nutt, daughter of John Nutt and Catherine Cowsart, on 25 March 1794 at Washington County, Georgia.2,6,7,8 James Patrick Martin died on 7 July 1811 at Georgia.9,10
James Patrick Martin enlisted in the 1st. South Carolina Regiment, commanded by Col. C. Pinckney on on 4 November 1775 Georgia was one of the last of the Colonies to become involved in the conflict with England that became the Revolutionary War. Unlike its neighboring state of South Carolina Georgia had no specific complaints against the crown. It was not represented in the Continental Congress of 1774. On January 18, 1775, however, a meeting was called in Savannah to select representatives. Only five of the 12 parishes were represented so the three representatives elected declined to serve. A second meeting was convened on July 4 and all 12 parishes were represented and a full congressional delegation was selected. So one can see that Georgia was not at all unified in its support of the Colonial revolt. There was strong opposition from those who supported the crown.
In this time of decision, the second son of John Martin, James Patrick, being about 17 years old, was the first of his fiamily to join the cause. He enlisted November 4, 1775 in the regiment being raised in Charleston by Charles C. Pinckney, a member of one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in South Carolina. A week later John Martin, Jr. joined the same regiment, seemingly as a replacement of James Patrick, the records also show that James served until Aug. 8, 1778.
So the sons of John Martin, Sr. made their decision for American Independence seven months before the Declaration of Independence.. There are records showing that John, Jr. was discharged Aug 3, 1778 and James Patrick was discharged August 8, 1778.
James and John both received bounty land grants for their service in the War. This land was located in Washington County. There is a letter in the Pension Office that places James Martin in Washington County where he lived in the early 1800's and also cites the family Bible records of his marriage to Martha Nutt and the date of his death and of Martha's death. This makes it possible to positively identify the James Martin and John Martin of the 1st South Carolina Regiment as our James and John. This is important because when you examine the Colonial Records of Georgia you discover that there were numerous James and John Martins and sometimes it is almost impossible to distinguish one from the other.11,12,13 He ended military service on 8 August 1778 at Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina.14 His nickname was "Pat."15
