John Arthur Roberts was born circa 1769 at Caswell County, North Carolina.2,1 Tom Roberts says John Arthur was born either in Charlotte County, VA or Orange County, NC about 1766.4 He was the son of David Montgomery Roberts and Caroline Mills.2,1 John Arthur Roberts married Nancy Hargis, daughter of Richard Nalley Hargis and Mary Jones, on 25 March 1789 at Caswell County, North Carolina, David Roberts was the Bondsman.5,2,1,6,4 John Arthur Roberts died after 1 October 1822 at Lincoln Parish, Georgia, His will was written 1 Oct 1822 and was filed for probate in Dec. 1822, so his death was sometime between Oct and Dec of that year.1

The following was information given to Carlos Elmo Roberts by his father.

Arthur Roberts and wife Nancy remained in Lincoln County, Georgia untilhis death in the year 1822. He was living in Persons County, NorthCarolina during the war of 1812, but have no information as to whether heenlisted in that war. After that he moved down to Lincoln County,Georgia where he died as above stated. (A transcript of his will writtenon 1 October 1822 and probated on 9 December 1822 is in the possession ofJohn F. Roberts.) Here at this old home where his grandfather Davidsettled is where Arthur died. Arthur Roberts had five sons and fivedaughters.

The following is the results of research by Tom Roberts of Greenwood,Georgia.

Marriage of Arthur to Nancy in 1789 was witnessed by David Roberts, JohnRoberts listed in 1784-7 Caswell County, Caswell Dist., North Carolinacensus (3 males 21 - 60+, 4 females) Arthur Roberts is listed in the1790 Hillsborough Dist., Caswell County, St. James Dist., North Carolinaand the 1810 Person County, North Carolina census (males #/ages 2/0-10,1/11-16, 1/27-45; females - 2/0-10, 2/11-16, 2/17-26, 1/27-45). Thefamily had one loam and 200 quantity (yards) cloth. The 150 acres ofland sold to him by father David in 1803 and witnessed by three of hisbrothers (Person County, North Carolina Deed Book C page 382) was soldalong with 46 additional acres for $300 in 1816 (Person County, NorthCarolina Deed Book E page 163). Arthur listed in CaptainGraves district Lincoln County, Georgia in 1818 (spelled Arther Robert). Both he and a David Roberts are listed in the 1820 Lincoln County, andColumbia County, Georgia census (very difficult to read). Arthur andDavid, but not the wives ages are stated to be between 26 - 45 ratherthan over 45. Fourteen people are living inn Arthur's house while onlyfour are living in David's. Both families are farmers with one person inArthur's household working in manufacturing. Arthur Roberts of LincolnCounty, Graves Mil. The following paragraph was recorded by Carlos Elmo Roberts as told tohim by his father. This written document has been handed down throughthe family.

First we find David Roberts of Person County, North Carolina. While heresides at this place he became a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Inthe year 1814 he, his four sons and daughters moved to Lincoln County,Georgia (near Old Salem Church.) He moved from Lincoln County, Georgiato what is now known as Lowndes County, Alabama in the year about 1820,settling near the Alabama River, about half way between Catawba and thecity of Montgomery. His four sons were: Jerry, Jesse, George andArthur. I have no information as to the number and names of DavidRoberts' daughters. These children were reared in Lincoln County,Georgia near Old Salem Church where David first settled after moving fromNorth Carolina to Georgia.

The following information was provided in February 2001 by Tom Roberts asa result of his research on the Roberts Family.

He was born either in Virginia or North Carolina. He was a RevolutionaryWar veteran from Charlotte County, Virginia. David Roberts was not inthe Granville or Caswell County, North Carolina 1784-7 census. A DavidRoberts of Person County, North Carolina sold land in Lincoln County,Georgia in 1798 for 300 silver dollars. Deed on file Lincoln County,Georgia courthouse Book A page 175-6. In 1803 in Person County, NorthCarolina a David Roberts deeds land to a Richard and Andrew Peel (Deedbook C page 379 and 381) (son-in-laws?). A David Roberts also sold 150acres for 120 pounds to son Arthur (C page 382). Witnesses to Arthur'sland were three of the sons of David - George, Jeremiah and Willis. ADavid Roberts paid a poll tax of $0.3125 in Lincoln County, Georgia in1818. I found no will of David's in North Carolina or Georgia. AnotherDavid Roberts (Abt. 1740 - 1802) and his son David (Abt. 1760) lived inPerson County, during the same time frame; therefore, I question whichDavid sold what. See notes under son John Arthur Roberts. (2,3, 5).

The rest of the estate was divided equally.5
He resided at Resided in Granville County, North Carolina..5 A Richard Roberts is listed in the Granville County, NC tax file of 1769 living with two whites and one black person. He sold land in Granville County in 1764 (Book G p256), in 1771 (Book I p242), and in 1772 (Book I p324). There were a Richard Roberts, Sr. and Jr. listed on the 1754 Granville County Militia (The Georgians, Genealogy of Pioneer Settlers, Jennette Holland Austin). His will is on file in the Granville County, NC courthouse dated April 17, 1772, probated May 1772 and lists his eight children. He beguest 250 acres to David Roberts and other assets to his remaining children. He did not mention his wife, therefore she must have died earlier. He left 200 acres to his grandson, Richard Bridges.
There are some who claim that Richards parents were Robert Roberts (ID # 14960 in Tom Roberts' dataset) and Pricilla Johns (ID # 15902 in Tom's dataset), but there is no proof of this that I can discover.3

That middle name is Fernandoz - Fernandis and the only reason I can come to concerning that middle name is that it was a name that the family wanted to carry forward. The family Bible says that the mother of my granmother was a Susan Ansley. So I am assuming that this Fernandoz is the wife of William Ansley. I link them because Wiliam was a shoemaker and the family story says that my grandmothers grandmother was a shoemaker.
