     Richard Nalley Hargis was born circa 1750 at Fairfax County, Virginia.4 He was the son of Abraham Lea Hargis I and Elizabeth Nalley.1,3,4 Richard Nalley Hargis married Mary Jones, daughter of Frury Jones, circa 1760 at Fairfax County, Virginia.3,4,5 Richard Nalley Hargis married Jane Jacobs Long circa 1770 at probably Orange County, North Carolina.4,6 Richard Nalley Hargis died in 1800 at Person County, North Carolina.4,3
     Richard Nalley Hargis was also known as James Richard Hargis.3,6 He and Jane Jacobs Long immigrated circa 1770 to Orange County, North Carolina, from Fairfax County, VA.3 Richard Nalley Hargis left a will between 1799 and 1800 at Person County, North Carolina.1 He came to old Orange County before the division of the county into four counties, while his son, Oliver, was quite young, and soon after his son, William, was born in Fairfax County, VA in 1769. Richard apparently had been living here long enough to establish himself as a trustworthy man when in 1772 he was asked to sign a petition for the establishment of a new county - Caswell.3 He is listed in the Hillsborough District, Caswell County, St. Luke's District, NC 1790 census but not in the 1800 census. He bought and sold a lot of land in NC that are recorded in various county courthouses. The family plantation chaged from Orange to Caswell to Person County as the new counties were formed from older ones in the late 1700s. His will, on file in the Person County, NC courthouse, was filed in June 1800 (Book A p260-1) He left everything to his wife, Jane, and children, except Oliver and Nancy. His son William and his wife Jane were the executors.2 Richard Hargis and Jeannie Long Jacobs lived in Orange County, NC wheretheir first three chil dren were born. Orange County, NC was formed in1752. Caswell County, NC was taken from Orang e County in 1777, and in1792 Person County was taken from Caswell County. The Hargis familypl antation, referred to as "Harguess Hope" was cut off each time intothe newly formed county . He was a planter. His will dated August 02, 1799refers to William Hargis, Sr. as executor . Richard is listed withbrothers Abraham, Shadrack and Thomas on the 1790 Caswell County, NCc ensus, page 83.7

     Abraham Lea Hargis I and Elizabeth Nalley immigrated after 1739 to Prince County, Maryland, from Charles County, MY.4 Abraham Lea Hargis I and Elizabeth Nalley immigrated on 11 December 1764 to Fairfax County, Virginia, from Prince County, MY. They lived on a 161 acres farm near South Branch of Pohic Run. Abraham agreed to 60 pounds for it. When he failed to do so, a decree was issued on October 16, 1770 and the land was seized and sold.4 Abraham Lea Hargis I and Elizabeth Nalley immigrated in 1770 to Tryon County, North Carolina, from Fairfax County, VA. Abraham purchased land from the CROWN on Dec. 24, 1770. The abstract reads: "200 acres in Tryon on the North side of Broad River -- including an island, opposite thereto, joining the mouth and side of Doolittle Creek, the side of the said river, and Capshaws Line.4,6 Abraham Lea Hargis I and Elizabeth Nalley immigrated circa 1775 to Caswell County, North Carolina, from Tryon County, NC. The part of Caswell County where Abraham and his family settled later became part of Person County.4 The name may be spelled "Hargiss." It is found both ways in the census. He is listed in the 1800 Person County, NC census. He lived with 10 other family members and one slave, but his wife Elizabeth is not one of them. There is a Abrim Hargiss in the Hillsborough District, Caswell County, St. Luke's District, NC in the 1790 census. He purchased 100 acres of land in Person County in 1795 (Book B p80).7 There seem to be four different birth dates. All show Jan 7, but years are 1707, 1710, 1714,a nd 1717

ABRAHAM HARGIS LIVED IN PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, MARYLAND, THEN IN CHARLES COUNTY, MARYLAND, THE N IN FAIRFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA ABOUT 1750,AND MOVED TO NORTH CAROLINA ABOUT 1766. THE DATE O F HIS DEATH IS UNKNOWN. HE HAD FIVE SONS: SHADERACH, DOB: ABOUT 1740. RICHARD, DOB: ABOU T 1742.

Abraham was born in Charles County, Maryland on 7 January 1707, and married there in 1739. Th e family moved to Prince George County, Maryland, and then he and his family immigrated to Fa irfax County, Virginia where they lived on a 161 acres farm near South Branch of Pohic Run . Abraham had purchased the farm on 17 December 1764 and was to pay 60 pounds for it. Whe n he failed to do so, a decree was issued on 16 October 1770, and the land was seized and sol d.

The family then moved to Tryon County, North Carolina where Abraham purchsed land from the CR OWN on 24 December 1771. "200 acres in Tryon on the N. side of Broad river - including an Is land opposite thereto, joining the mouth and side of Dolittle Creek, the side of the sd. rive r, and Capshaws Line."

About 1765 the family moved again to Caswell County, North Carolina in the part that later be came Person County.

Smith circa 1665.2 Thomas Lea Hargis died circa 1715/16 at Charles County, Maryland.5 His estate was probated on 22 January 1716 at Charles County, Maryland, The will was witnessed by William Williams, Jno. Carrington, and Jno. Martin. It is recorded in Will Book 14, Page 336. For some reason the spouse is not mentioned in the will even though she survived him.2
     Thomas Lea Hargis purchased land from William Asa Hargis in 1668 at Charles County, Maryland, In 1668 Tlhomas Lea and William, his brother, patented a tract of land in Charles County, MD, near Zachiah Swamp. The patent, "Hargis Hope" is on file in the records of Annapolis, Maryland, as well as their wills.1,6
