His wife at the time of his death wa named Margaret and was possibly a widow of a Mr. Watson, since the witnesses for it were Charles Mooney, Union Watson and Mary Watson. Daughters by the second wife are named as Thamer, Polly, and Leah. A daughter-in-law (step-daughter in those times) is also named. She was Sarah Watson. (Maryland Wills, Bk. 27, p. 532).1

     William Asa Hargis purchased land from Thomas Lea Hargis in 1668 at Charles County, Maryland, In 1668 Tlhomas Lea and William, his brother, patented a tract of land in Charles County, MD, near Zachiah Swamp.      Shadrack Hargis served in theRevolutionary War in 1776 as a soldier in the Revolutionary War.1 Shadrack served as a captain in the North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution. For his service he was granted land in Tennessee. His grant was Number 3104 issued July 10, 1788 and enteed October 28, 1783 for 2100 acres on both sides of the Lessahatcher River. This rive runs from Memphis to Lacamie(?) on the present Route 64 Highway about 65 or 70 miles in length. It crosses Shelby, Hayood and Madison Counties.6,3

     William Hargis (3) was born on 16 July 1760 at Fairfax County, Virginia.3,2,5,1 He was the son of Abraham Lea Hargis I and Elizabeth Nalley.3,4,2,1 William Hargis (3) married Elizabeth Jay, daughter of James Jay and Mary Voss, on 12 September 1782.1,2 William Hargis (3) died on 11 March 1836 at Sparta, White County, Tennessee, at age 75.1,2,3,5
     William Hargis (3) served in theRevolutionary War as an ensign during the American Revolution and fought in the Battle at Guilford Courthouse, serving during August to November 1781. He was called into service while a resident of Caswell County, North Carolina. He drew $26.oo for eight months service as a private, and $30.00 for three months as an ensign. He served under Adj. Samuel Johnson, Capt. William White, Colonels Yancey and James Sanders, and was also in Col. Hugh Tinnings Regiment. Full information on his military service in the Revolutionary War can be found in his application for pension, Claim W82, obtainable from the General Service Administration, National Archives and Records Service, Washington, D. C.
After the War he lived in Caswell County for 20 years, then moved to Rutherford County, Tennessee. From there he moved to Knox County and then to White County, all in Tennessee. His children are named in his Revolutionary War Pension Application number 5851.2,3 The data which follow were obtained from the papers on file in Revolutionary War pension clai m, W. 82, based upon the military service in that war of William Hargis.
William Hargis was born July 16, 1760, in Fairfax County, Virginia. The names of his parent s are not known.
While living with his father in Caswell County, North Carolina, William Hargis volunteered, w as commissioned an ensign and served four tours as such officer in the North Carolina Troops , as follows, from November, 1778, to April 10, 1779, under Adjutant Samuel Johnson, Captai n William White, Colonels Yancy and James Sanders; three months, his services ending June 9 , 1780, in Captain Adam Sanders' Company, Colonel Hugh Tinning's Regiment, from some time i n 1781, in Captain Shadrach Hargis' (soldier's oldest brother ) Co., Colonel William left th e service a few days after the battle, having served three months, from August 19, 1781 to No vember 19, 1781, in Captain Moore's Company.
After the Revolution, he lived in Caswell County, North Carolina, for about twenty years, the n moved to Rutherford County, that state thence to Knox County, Tennessee, thence to White Co unty, Tennessee.
He was allowed pension on his application executed April 10, 1833, while residing in said Whi te County, about fourteen miles from Sparta, where he resided for about twenty-five years.
William Hargis died March 11, 1836, in White County, Tennessee.
The soldier married September 12, 1782, Elizabeth Jay. She was born April 22, 1766. The plac e of her birth and marriage and names of her parents are not stated.
Soldier's widow, Elizabeth, was allowed pension on her application executed April 11, 1838, w hile residing in White County, Tennessee.
