My Coffin Roots

This site will trace the descendents of three COFFIN men born in or around Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York in the mid 1700's, whom, based on my information, I assume to be brothers, and furthermore, to be the sons of Isaac and Anna (CHURCHILL) COFFIN. Other researchers differ on these points, which will be discussed on the pages of this website. The parents of said Isaac Coffin are not yet known, and may not descend from the immigrant Tristram Coffin. The brothers are:

1. Edward Coffin - born about 1741 in Fishkill, Dutchess, New York, he enlisted in the New York provincial troops on 21 Apr 1761 under Captain Isaac Terbush, and probably also was a soldier during the American Revolution. He had 7 sons, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Abraham, John, Benjamin, and Edward, and one daughter, Anna. Edward married Sybil Tappen on 21 Mar 1779 in the Dutch Reformed Church of Hopewell, Dutchess, New York. He moved to Herkimer, New York, and then to Deerfield, Oneida New York, where he died on 13 Aug 1824.

2. Isaac Coffing - born probably in Fishkill, Dutchess, New York, he married Sarah Nichols on 18 Feb 1770, and served as Commissary in the American Revolution until autumn of 1775. He was later killed, possibly in Oak Neck, Huntington, Long Island, on 8 Sep 1778, leaving his widow, and son John Churchill Coffing. John Churchill Coffing had four children with his first wife Jerusha Fitch, namely Janette, Clarissa, John H., and Charles F.; and five children with his second wife Maria Birch, namely Churchill, Joshua B., Marcia, Maria, and George.

3. John Coffin - born in 1753 in Dutchess County, New York, he married Marytje Van Tassel in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York on 16 Jan 1772. He had at least one son, Isaac, on 4 Oct 1773 in Fishkill, who in turn had 6 children, Maria, John, Elizabeth, Isaac, Jacob, and Abraham. The family moved to Bethlehem, Albany New York before 1790, then to Acra, Greene, New York around 1803.
