Reuben Lamb, son of Henry Lamb, was born 4 July 1732, in Perquimans County, North Carolina.
He was reported 4 August 1756, in Perquimans County, to be married to Martha Moore, daughter of Robert Moore and Hannah Mainwaring. See Mainwaring and Moore, Part V
On 1 October 1760, Reuben and Martha transferred to New Garden Monthly Meeting, North Carolina.
In June 1766, they transferred to Perquimans Monthly Meeting.
In the 1779 tax list of Randolph County, North Carolina, it was written that Reuben and his brothers had not taken the oath of Allegiance, or refused to return inventories of their taxable property.
Reuben died before 1784, when Martha and her daughters were received 12 June 1784 at Cententnea Monthly Meeting, North Carolina.

Benjamin Lamb, son of Reuben Lamb and Martha Moore, was born 12 June 1760, in Perquimans County, North Carolina.
He was married 10 March 1783, in Randolph County, North Carolina, to Elizabeth Jackson, who was born about 1766, and died 5 February 1837. He died in April 1845, in Randolph County, North Carolina. The children were all born in Randolph County.
According to the AF this individual is the son of Reuben Lamb & Martha Moore; and alternately attributed in AF to have the DOB of the Benjamin Lamb documented to be the son of Joseph Lamb & Frances Beeson in genealogy records of Center Monthly Meeting, North Carolina.
Some researchers have also attributed the 1783 Civil Marriage to have occurred in 1787 at Center Monthly Meeting, North Carolina probably due to the attempt to attribute the marriage to the much younger Benjamin, son of Joseph Lamb.
Benjamin's will, dated 25 August 1831, was proved May 1845, Randolph County, North Carolina; mentions Children: Charity, Leah, Levinia, Sarah, Elizabeth, Wilmont, Joab, Henry, Fanny and Allen Lamb.
Obituary of Mrs Elizabeth Lamb, wife of Benjamin Lamb, died 5 February 1837, in Randolph County, North Carolina; published in Asheboro Southern Citizen on 25 February 1837.

Reuben Lamb (2), son of Reuben Lamb (1) and Martha Moore, was born 16 September 1769, in Perquimans County, North Carolina.
He was married about 1797. He was disowned 25 February 1797 for being out of unity with the church, when he married Mary Fincher.
On several Constable bonds preserved in the archives at Raleigh, North Carolina dated 1811 through 1814, he signed his name as "Reubin Lamm." In the Back Creek Monthly Meeting of Quakers, it was Reuben Lam. Information on this line comes from Mrs. Charles L. Lamb (Jo) 601 Dunham Dr. Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Grace Curtis, SR 2, Box 1073, Tularosa, New Mexico. (1993).
Reuben had purchased 178 acres on Back Creek, Randolph County from Ephraim Overman in 1789. This tract became know as his "home place." (Deed Bk 4/21) Among his personal property, was one "plad" cloak.
The duties of constable in those days required long hours of travel by horseback or by buggy over dusty or muddy roads and trails, up hills and down valleys, come rain or come shine. For many of those miles that plaid cloak had been Reuben's companion. Many times neighbors and acquaintances had become aware that Reuben was coming up some road by first seeing that plaid cloak.
He may have been married/2 to Margaret Brookshire who had 2 children fathered by him, Emsley and Hannah Brookshire, who were taken to Indiana in 1826, by Tom and Sarah (Brookshire) Newby.
When Reuben died he owned several tracts of land in Randolph County (including the home place) total 677 acres. The children were born in Randolph County, North Carolina.

Reuben and Patience lived in North Carolina, until about 1819, after the birth of their four oldest children, when they moved back to Ohio and were probably in Belmont County for a short time, but soon moved their membership to Darby Creek Meeting, in Logan County, Ohio, where the 3 youngest children were born.
"Howard County was first organized in 1844, a part of the Miami Indian Reserve. Reuben Edgerton with (#F-61.) John Lamb, one of the first county commissioners, laid out the town of New London in 1845. Investigation of Howard County records revealed the fact that he had owned a large tract of land in that county and town. From Meet the Edgertons, by J Howard Binns
"For many years Quakers in the southern States had been in varying degrees of disunity with the institution of Negro slavery. When, in the early 1800's the Northwest Territory became available for settlement free of slavery, many of these Quakers felt that a land of opportunity in an area north of the Ohio River had opened up for them. But to give up their comfortable homes and productive farms, make the long trek of 600 miles or more over the mountains and through almost unbroken forest trails, and finally to construct some crude log cabins in the wilderness, in which to live until better accommodations could be built, required stout hearts and resolute wills, and a grim determination that this was the course which a sensitive Quaker conscience demanded.
"Many of the Carolina Quakers felt the conviction that they must make this move. Soon great numbers of them were submitting to the hardships of the long journey and many of the thriving meetings were stripped of their members until it was necessary to discontinue or lay them down. On the other hand, Quaker meetings sprang up thickly throughout the area of Ohio and Indiana where the Carolina emigrants settled.
"The Edgerton family was caught in this movement. Joseph and James, the two eldest sons of Thomas and Elizabeth had both married in 1785, and each had a family of several children, some of them grown. James and Sarah moved in 1804 to Belmont County, Ohio. During that year Joseph and Martha, and their 5 younger children also made the move to the same part of Ohio. At that time, Joseph's older children were married and settled in North Carolina, and some of them remained there for some time, moving later to Ohio.
"Although Joseph and Martha went first to Belmont County, their sojourn there was short. Probably Joseph Edgerton had heard of fertile and more level land farther to the west and the rough hilly terrain of Belmont County did not appeal to him. Records of their membership in the Friends Meeting show that very soon this family moved on to Darby Creek Meeting in Logan County, Ohio. From there, in rapid succession, we find recorded their removal to Miami County, Ohio, then to Wayne County, Indiana, and to Henry County, Indiana.
"Reuben, the oldest, was married in the Captina Meeting, Belmont County, Ohio, but returned to live in North Carolina for several years before moving back to Ohio. Probably some of the others did similarly. No doubt they found it very difficult to give up their homes in an established community, and try living in the wilderness of the Northwest Territory."

"When Aunt Martha Frasier died, "Sary Anne," as everyone called her, took her place and kept house for her father, caring for the younger children until Uncle Daniel brought home another wife for "Sary Anne" to wait upon. Through the years she eased the death-beds of three successive wives and saw them depart for "Gloryland," leaving an ever increasing family for her to bring up. Like Washington, Providence left her childless---but she was a mother to many and her life was given to the service of others, and I hope her pure, simple, kindly Quaker soul goes marching on forever."......Ivie Rees Smith
"After Martha died, Daniel moved to a farm near Carlisle, 11 miles from Des Moines, where he died. The Rees family was familiar with Daniel's matrimonial ventures and Dr. Rees was the family physician. Ivie knew the later children and the family many years after Aunt Eliza Powell had moved to Kansas. She attended Daniel's funeral. I am grateful to her for the additional data incoporated herein, especially her tribute to "Sary Anne" Frasier. I often heard my mother make the statement: "Uncle Daniel Fransier married his fourth wife on his 16th birthday." The old boy was born on February 29---That's what kept him young. I personally knew Mrs. Joseph E. Frasier, Dan, Joe and Ella. They lived near Hamburg, Iowa, in the early 80's and later moved to Missouri. Attention is called to the fact that Joseph, Martha's brother, married Anna Frasier."...W.G.M.
"He was married 4 times. There were 3 children of his marriage/2: Aimee Frazier (born 1842/3) unmarried; Nancy Frazier, and David Frazier." W.G.M.

Mary Ann Edgerton, daughter of Thomas Edgerton and Mary Osborn, was born 1824, near Darby Creek Monthly Meeting, in Logan County, Ohio.
She was married contrary to discipline, 3 April 1842, Marion, Grant County, Indiana, to William Kelsay (See CE-3 Kelsay Family, Part V)
William Kelsay, son of Smith Kelsay, Sr. and Lydia Hewet (Huit), was born 1824, in Hampshire County, Virginia. (now West Virginia). William obtained a marriage license on 30 March 1842, and was married 3 April 1842, in Marion, Grant County, Indiana, by acting Justice of the Peace, Soloman Parsons, Esquire, to Mary Ann Edgerton. Parsons recorded the marriage on the 27 April.
William had a brother, John Kelsay, who was a witness at their wedding, who was a resident of Madison Township, Fremont County, Iowa, in July 1863, and swore to the above facts, when Mary applied for a widow's pension. Samuel Edgerton, Mary Ann's brother, was also a witness. This marriage was recorded 11 November 1842, Back Creek Monthly Meeting, near Marion. (See Back Creek Monthly Meeting records, Vol. 3. Quaker Encyclopedia) Mary Ann was noted as having married contrary to discipline, because they had been married by a Justice of the Peace, but not that she was dismissed from membership.
However, on 16 February 1843, she joined the Methodists, and then the following November, she joined another society, and then in January 1844, the Friends dismissed her.
The only record of William in Portage County, was when he witnessed his brother's sale of a piece of ground in Paris Township on 17 April 1848. William and Mary Ann, and family, appear on the 1850 Census Grant County, Indiana. They moved to Sidney, Fremont County, Iowa, about 1852, and appear on the 1860 Census there. The homestead filing shows that their property was lots in the city. William was listed on the 1850 Census as an engraver (stone cutter). At that time, they had living with them, Mary J. Chapman, age 33, born Virginia; George Chapman, age 17, farmer, born Iowa; Edwin Chapman, age 3, born in Kansas (No known relationship.) on the 1860 Vensus, he was recorded as a Lawyer.
William died during the Civil War. He entered the service of the United States, as a volunteer, on or about the 15th day of September 1861, in Omaha, in the Territory of Nebraska, as a First Lieutenant of Company A, commander, Captain M. Patrick, in the "Nebraska Cavalry," (which said company afterwards became Company A in the Regiment of "Curtis Horse," commander, Colonel Arizona.) William was afterwards Captain, and then Major William Kelsay of Company A, "Curtis Horse," He turned up in Fort Henry, Tennessee, on 2 February 1862, and was listed as a member of the 5th Regiment, of Iowa Cavalry Volunteers. He died at Fort Heiman, Kentucky, on 28th February 1862; the cause of death was listed as Typhoid Pneumonia. The present day Fort Heiman is in Calloway County, and partly submerged in Lake Kentucky. It is possible that the graves were moved to Fort Donelson, Tennessee, where there is a National Cemetery. A recent inquiry there did not find his name listed there, but they had many unmarked graves. The government could not give more information at that time.
The family tradition, which is in complete error, says that he died at sea, and was buried at sea. It seems strange that the family never had a record of his being an officer, or knowledge of his service. However, Mary Ann was known to be bitter because he volunteered for service, and that she was left a widow with a family to raise. It appears that her daughter Amanda died shortly after her father.

In the 1880 Census of Benton Township, of Fremont County, Iowa, Mary Ann was living with her daughter Sarah Ann and family. She sold some land there in 1883, not long before she and Sarah left. Mary Ann received her last pension check (Pension # 1481, Certificate 33809) of $25., on 4 March 1889. She died shortly thereafter, was then dropped from the rolls. She died at the home of her son Samuel in Norcatur, Norton County, Kansas, just south of the Nebraska border. She is buried in the Norcatur Cemetery, on the County Line toward Clayton. A flat stone says "Mrs. Kelsay 1889." Her Death Certificate records her death as 24 May 1899, that all she possessed was $75. (what she had saved from her widow's pension.) Children:
Samuel Edgerton, son of Thomas Edgerton and Mary Osborn, was born 24 February 1825, in Logan County, Ohio, moving to Wayne County, Indiana, as a child. His youth was passed in working on a farm. He was educated in a school conducted under the auspices of the Society of Friends. At age 16, he went to Grant County, Indiana, and lived there until 1852, when he moved to Dallas County, Iowa.
He was married 25 January 1844, to Winnie Lytle, who was born in 1828, in North Carolina, of southern Quaker stock.
They moved to Fremont County, Iowa, in 1851, settling near Riverton.
He enlisted in Company E., 29th Iowa volunteer infantry, at Sidney in August, 1862; was in all the battles in which his regiment participated except that of Saline. He ranked as corporal for two years. He was sick for some time, and finally after more than two years service, was discharged at New Orleans, and mustered out at Davenport.
He farmed 120 acres of well-improved land, in section 4, and raised stock. In 1907, he and Winnie were living in Goodland, Sherman County, Kansas. Samuel was Republican, and was a class leader and steward in the Methodist Church. Several of the children were deaf and some who died young. One speculation is that the family was stricken with diptheria.
Children:
John William Edgerton, son of Thomas Edgerton and Mary Elizabeth Osborn, was born 27 January 1837, Milford Monthly Meeting, Wayne County, Indiana. He and his mother went to Riverton, Fremont County, Iowa, in 1856 on a wagon train to live with his sister Mary Ann Kelsay. After the death of his mother in 1857, he moved to Guide Rock, Nebraska, with his sister and family. He went to Pawnee County, Nebraska, when he was 18, and helped cut the timber and raised the first 2 houses in that county.
He was married 27 February 1859, in Pawnee County, Nebraska, to Mary (Polly) Emily Rodgers, who was born 6 June 1840, in Clinton, Anderson County, Tennessee, the daughter of Rev. Pleasant Marshall Rogers (1809-1874) and Sarah Ann Beeler (1808-1885). Mary was born and raised with slaves in her home in Tennessee. She did exquisite handwork.

Children:
Owen Edgerton, son of William Edgerton and Nellie Frazier, was born 7 February 1822, Capitina Monthly Meeting, in Belmont County, Ohio.
He was married about 1841 to Mary Rich, who was born about 1825.
They both grew up in Indiana, their 2 oldest children being born there. About 1845, the family moved to near Des Moines, Iowa, where the four younger children were born.
Owen was a successful farmer and for several years operated a Nursery, propagating fruit and ornamental trees and shrubs. He was a shrewd business man of sterling honesty and integrity, highly respected in the community.
During the Civil War, Owen was a Deputy U. S. Marshal and at one time had charge of a large body of prisoners of war from the southern battlefields.
He died in August 1886; Mary died September 1901.
Owen Edgerton was a successful farmer and stock raiser and followed the avocation all his life. He and my father operated a Nursery for several years under the name of Edgerton & Means. In addition to propagating fruit and ornamental trees and shrubs, they grew millions of Osage Orange hedge plants. The entire face of the earth within a radius of 150 miles was fenced with those pesky plants. That nursery was the chief cause of the rural profanity in that section of the country during my boyhood days. Did you ever step on a hedge-thorn while plowing bare footed, or try pruning the pests? Only a Mexican brought up on cactus, horned toads and rattlesnakes ever experienced more real grief. Owen was a shrewd business man, yet generous and sympathetic toward his relatives, neighbors and acquaintances. I do not recall a time when there was not from one to five indigent relatives loafing at the ranch and feeding on his substance. I did not understand their system then. They were merely "on relief."
Grandfather was a man of sterling honesty and integrity and everyone was his friend. He had deep political convictions which he freely expressed, yet he offended none. He was "Uncle Owen" to all who knew him and he was a close rival to Abraham Lincoln as a story teller. He had a habit of riding his horse past the school house during the noon intermission and sowing broadcast of the yard handful after handful of peppermint lozenges. All the boys roundabout kept on the lookout for "uncle Owen" and they were for him 100 per cent. I believe Owen discovered a "system" and that he was the original "new dealer." However, the system is used on grownups now. Grandfather died of typhoid fever in August, 1886."......W.G.M.
"Mary Edgerton was a quiet little woman who rarely left her own fireside. She was kind and considerate to all and had but little interest in anything except her home, her children and the family welfare. She was an incessant worker and her thrift had no small part in keeping the family pocketbook replenished. After Grandfather's death, Grandmother lived with her youngest son, Owen Asahel ("Zel") until her death in 1901."........W.G.M.

From Roslyn Kelsay Dozier-
He was a kindly man, small build, and he loved to sit in his rocking chair on the porch and roll his own cigarettes and smoke all day. Grandma used to get real mad at him for sitting around and smoking all day in his twilight years.
He sure loved me and all children. I spent hours with him as a child playing under the avocado trees at his house on Walnut St. in Anaheim, California. I would make mud pies and pretend to serve Grandpa meals as he sat in the shade of those big old trees. We laughed and he told me stories. I was about 4-6 years old when we did that. I was the only granddaughter, so naturally I was spoiled by my Grandpa and Grandma!! They were very special to me.
Grandma was the best cook around and could whip up a huge meal in 30 minutes. She always had cooked rhubarb and apple pies. She made huge oatmeal cookies! I spend many hours with them as my Mother was a teacher and was at school every day. Grandpa and Grandma were my baby-sitters. I loved being with them!"

Roslyn Kelsay Dozier says:
"My Dad loved to sing and once participated in a Minstrel show at my school when I was in kindergarten. Mother was also my own teacher that year-that was rough because she wouldn't let me call her MOM. I had to call her Mrs. Kelsay like all of the other children. It made me mad!!
"My parents were very hard working people. Mom taught school and Dad did numerous things over the years. He worked for the Gas County in North Hollywood for a few years and we lived there until I was about 3 years old. We lived in Anaheim till 1950. Mom and Dad owned a motel and our house on Crone St. had a small orange grove behind it. Mom didn't teach while we had the motel. She changed the beds and did the washing for all the rooms.
"In 1949, they sold the motel and we traveled around the United States for nine months. We pulled a 24 foot house trailer with a new 1949 Lincoln and covered every state except the New England states. We even went down into old Mexico. It was a fabulous trip. David, Dan, and I were the children on that trip. Marshall was born not long after we returned to Anaheim.
"My Dad got real sick on the trip and had to have his thyroid gland removed at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. We were there for 6 weeks while he had surgery and recovered enough to travel. Those nine months were probably the most memorable years of my life!
"We were a very close family! I did resent the fact that Mother had to work. She was gone all of the time it seemed. She was a very dedicated teacher and she put her heart and soul into her students. They adored her! She was always really tired when she came home at night.
"In 1950, my parents bought 40 acres in Chino, California. They built a new, 3-bedroom home and Dad got into the cattle business. We had about 40 head of white-faced Herefords all the time. We'd buy them as calves, raise them to maturity, and then truck them to the Los Angeles stock yards for sale. Then Dad would start the process over. He didn't make any money doing that so he got a job at the Corona Clipper County, in Corona, California. He worked as a foreman there. He maintained the ranch too! What a busy time.
"Mother was teaching again, and it seemed it was always a struggle for them to make ends meet. Since Marshall was born in late 1950, I was old enough to be his caretaker while Mom worked. We had a Mexican live-in for a while, but Marshall was in my care after school and on weekends. We had many family get-togethers on that ranch! The fourth of July was always the big one and the grandpas always brought fireworks.
"They moved to Escondido in 1955 after they sold the ranch in Chino. They bought 34 rental units and for the next 13 years made their living from renting the duplexes and Mom taught school here in Escondido. She taught every grade from kindergarten through 6th grade during her teaching career. She even taught pre-school.
"She and Dad retired in 1969 and had 9 years of travel and retirement till their death. They went on a 4 1/2month cruise around the world in 1971. They spent much time going to Cottonwood Cove, Nevada to fish. Dad loved to lake fish or ocean fish. He would stand up all day and fish. He would skip lunch and never sit down. He was intense on fishing, but never caught that many fish! He was very stubborn!
"My parents were extremely strict and sometimes overdid it. They were a little bit legalistic. They were very honest and taught us kids to pay our bills before we paid ourselves. Unfortunately, that didn't carry over to every one of us kids. My brothers have had many problems in their lives and have turned away from some of the basic principles our parents taught us.
"I was named executrix to their estate when they died. It surprised me when I read their will! I thought it would be my oldest brother, David. I always have taken life almost too seriously because of my upbringing. Now I am learning to relax a little more and enjoy life. I tend to be a workaholic.
"In summary, I would say the Kelsay family could be known for their strong wills and stubbornness. In our family, there seems to be a tendency toward self employment or business ownership. Dad never liked working for someone else. My Dad was the only stable one in his family. He only had a 6th grade education but he knew what it was to work! He over-worked sometimes! He stayed in great physical shape till his death.
"My parents were killed in a car accident on 30 May 1978; a drunk driver "rear-ended" them, their car exploded, and they burned to death in the car. It was tragic!! They were both 67 years old and in quite good health. They always said they wanted to go together. The drunk driver got 6 months in the county jail! Today he would receive a much stiffer penalty with the new laws the way they are.
"My parents were loving, Christian people. They hardly ever drank and would do anything to help someone. They were active in the Congregational Church. Dad was an elder."
The children were born in Anaheim, California.
