William Hinshaw, parent of our William Hinshaw, has an interesting history in the Quaker records in Ireland which can be seen at the Hinshaw Web Site above. He was received at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, North Carolina, on 11/4/1769. He had a son Ezra, brother of our William, who was the namesake of son Ezra who married Jane Woodward.
On 2/3/1781 our William Hinshaw was granted a certificate to Center Monthly Meeting in Guilford County, North Carolina, and from there he was granted a certificate to marry at Deep River. Margaret Hunt Hinshaw was then granted a certificate back to Center. Center Monthly Meeting was the meeting of the Abraham & Hannath Thornbrough Woodward family (the subjects of this web site), so they likely lived near each other in Randolph County. Center Meeting was near the Guilford/Randolph County line so the Hinshaw's might have lived in Guilford County. The Hinshaw's were granted a certificate to Westfield Monthly Meeting, NC, on 1/21/1792 from New Garden Monthly Meeting "having removed to the waters of the Holston River." Westfield was the closest meeting to the Holston River at that time. There is some speculation they might have moved as early as 1787 so we do not know the birthplaces of some of the middle children. The children's births are all listed at Lost Creek Monthly Meeting in Tn. William Hinshaw, Jr. who married Matilda Doane, was grandfather of William Wade Hinshaw who authored the "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy." This is a monumental work of great importance to all those with Quaker ancestors (estimated to be one third of the people in the United States!). William Hinshaw, Jr. witnessed the will of Samuel Woodward in Hardin County, Iowa, in 1858. Wm Jr's daughter Mary Hinshaw was married to Samuel's son Samuel M. Woodward. William Hinshaw's obituary can be seen at the Hinshaw Web Site. For more on Samuel M. and Mary Hinshaw Woodward see Marion Monk's Web Site and use the back button on your browser to return here. |
