Elizabeth Burgess Noble The wife of Lewis Noble was Elizabeth Burgess, born 6/9/1781 in Virginia and died 6/15/1859 and buried in New Boston Cemetery. To date her family in Virginia has not been identified. William and Sophia BurgesSee biographical material provided by Louis D. Wagner below. Although biographical material indicates that William Burges came early to Mercer County, the first census record we find is in the 1870 census in Eliza Township: William Bergis, 52, farmer, born Hanover; Sophia, 53, born Hanover; Susan, 20, born Il; Jane, 16, born Il; Sarah, 7, born Il. They had another child Henry who is found in Shields Cemetery in Eliza: Henry Burges 1860-1867 age 7 yr 9 mo. He is buried next to his mother: Sophia, wife of Wm Burges, died Dec 6, 1884, age 56 yr. There were additional children who may be buried there with no surviving tombstones when the cemetery walkdowns were done by the DAR in the 1960's.William Burges purchased land in Eliza Township in the 1860's and is listed on the 1875 Eliza Township Map in Section 23. The family is still in Eliza Township in 1880: William Burgess, farmer, 63, born Hanover, parents born Hanover; Sophia, 53, born Hanover, parents born Hanover; Sarah, 15, born Il. Daughter Jane had married and is also found in Eliza Township in 1880: Frank Frankinfield, farmer, 31, born Pa, parents born Pa; Jane, 24, born Il; parents born Ger; Hattie, 4, Il; Mary J., 2, Il; Mable M., 1, Il. With them is Frank's brother-in-law William Gaumer, 25, born Pa; and his niece Sarah Baggs, 14, born Pa. (There is more on the Gaumer and Frankinfield families on the Pennsylvania Families page). Daughter Susan Burges married Frederick Kruger on 2/1/1871 in Muscatine County, Iowa. The family moved to Fremont Township in Johnson County, Iowa before 1880 where they are found in the census: Frederick Kruger, farmer, 32, born Prussia, parents born Prussia; Susan, 31, born Il, parents born Prussia; Mary, 8, Il; Frederick, 7, Il; Sarah, 5, Il; William, 1, Il; Charles, 7 mo, Il. William Burges married Susan Watkins on 7/13/1885 in Muscatine County, Iowa. He apparently followed daughter Susan to Johnson County, Iowa and died at her home. (see link to obituary below). James and Amelia BurgessJames Burgess married Amelia Berthuram, daughter of James and Nancy Berthuram of Kentucky, on 6/3/1862 in Mercer County. They are found in Millersburg in 1870: James M. Burgess, 28, blacksmith, born Ky; Amelia A., 26, Mo; Arthur A., 7, Il; Willard H., 5, Il; Henry E., 1, Il. They are again found in Millersburg in 1880: James Burgess, blacksmith, 38, born Ky, parents born Va; Amelia, 37, born Mo, parents born Ky; Augustus, 17, Il; Willard, 15, Il; Eugene, 12, Il; Ruth, 5, Il. We have not followed this family further since it is not in our area of study but it is of interest that there is a notation in the Mercer County Cemetery records: Henry E. Burgess, President Board of Trustees, William and Vashti College (1907-1919). Born 1868, died 1920.Frank HenryWilliam BurgesBy Louis D. WagnerWm. Burges was my GG grandfather.The family history is somewhat of a puzzle due to missing,hidden,misspelled and lack of written records. Eliza township folk who are in Mercer County got and still get their mail through Muscatine, Iowa and Rock Island County Post Offices. Wm. Burges and his family were German people in an English Country. They held on to the 'Old Country ' culture as long as they could. Females were only expected to go to school until they could read and write a little bit. The Burges' lived in log homes in remote places, they were reported to be in the New Boston and Eliza townships several years before the census people recorded them. Many people that came to the 'west' in the 1800 time period paid for land that did not have a clear title. Some would just load up the wagon and move on, Wm. Burges did not. He might of attempted to sell the property, but it kept returning to him. Finally, his granddaughter Mary Wagner, in 1922 took the necessary legal steps to obtain a valid title. The land abstract shows a flow of Burges family history and family obits do likewise. Additional biographical material is included on the page with the obituary. August Lewis WagnerMy grandfather was born 12 Jan ,1866 in Germany {Prussia}. His date of Death was 17 Nov, 1921. His stepfather was August H. Wagner and his mother was 'Minnie' Lemkau [Lenkau] Wagner. His 2 half brother's were Ernest and Wm. Wagner. August Lewis married Mary Krueger on 11 Oct, 1890 at Nichols Iowa. Five children were born to this union,Albert, unknown daughter, Herman, Cora and August Louis. Uncle Albert died after falling from a train dismount on 15 Feb. 1921. Albert had 2 children, Cora had 3. Uncle Albert is buried in Greenwood Cemetery. August H., 'Minnie' and Wm. Are buried at Nichols Ia.and Ernest is buried at West Liberty. Grandfather is buried at Eliza Creek. Most of this information was obtained at the Essley- Noble Museum, Aledo, Ill.Mrs. Mary WagnerFuneral services for Mrs. Mary Wagner, 102, Joy, were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Olin Funeral Home in Joy. The Rev. David Eadie, pastor of the Joy United Methodist Church officiated .Burial was in the Eliza Creek Cemetery. Mrs. Wagner died Sunday July 7, 1974 at the Mercer County Nursing Home.Mary Krueger was born 18 Oct, 1871 near Petersville, Ill. The daughter of Fred and Susan Burges Krueger.On 11 Oct. 1890, she married August Lewis Wagner, son of August H. and Wilheminia Wagner, of Nichols, Iowa. [August H. was his stepfather] August Lewis died 17 Nov. 1921. Most of her life was spent near Eliza and she was a member of the German Lutheran Church. Surviving are a son August Louis, Aledo and a daughter Mrs. Cora Carlson,Joy, 11 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren and a sister Mrs. Lena Hank, Brighton, Iowa. Preceding her in death were her husband, a daughter, 2 sons, 15 brothers and sisters, a grandson and a great grandson. |
