Daniel and Anna Haines StroupDaniel Stroup came very early to Mercer County; perhaps as early as 1836 or 1837 per the birthplace and dates given for Daniel, Jr. in census records. We believe the David Stroup listed in the Eliza Creek Cemetery DAR records, died 10/8/1861, age 62 years 18 days is actually Daniel Stroup as there is no other record of a David in Mercer County. The old tombstones were hard to read and there are many errors in the records.Daniel Stroup is found in 1840 in Township 15N Range 5 W (future Eliza Township): 1 male under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 50-60 (should be 40-50?); 2 females 5-10, 1 female 20-30. In 1850 the family is #621 in Township 15N Range 5W: Daniel Stroup, 52, farmer, born Ky; Anna, 39, Ohio; William, 21, farmer, Indiana; Alfred, 18, Indiana; Eliza J., 17, Indiana; Jacob, 15, Indiana; Daniel, 13, Illinois; Sarah E., 9, Il; Amanda, 6, Il; Columbus, 3, Il. Daniel Stroup is found in Eliza Township next to the family of his son William in 1860: #2644 Daniel Stroup, 53, farmer, born Ohio; William Johnson, 26, laborer, born Indiana; Ruth Johnson, 20, born Indiana. The age of 53 is obviously an error compared to the 1850 census and his tombstone record; we looked at the original census record and it is clearly entered as 53. We have page 645-6 from the History of Guthrie County [Iowa] which tells us much more about the family. It is a biography of William Stroup, "son of Daniel and Anna (Haines) Stroup" who was born "in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, on August 24, 1827, where his father worked upon his farm until the summer of 1836, when they went to Mercer County, Illinois, where his father died, October 15, 1864. The Eliza Creek Cemetery record for David Stroup gives date of death as October 8, 1861 which could again be a result of difficulty in reading the old tombstone but it appears to be the same person. Daniel's daughter, Eliza Jane Stroup, had married Aaron Waters on 12/31/1854 and they had moved to Leavenworth County, Kansas by 1860 (more below). Eliza's mother, Anna Haines Stroup is also found in Leavenworth County, Kansas in 1860 with some of the other children: Anna Stroup, 45, farmer, born Ohio; Sarah, 18, Il; Amanda, 16, Il; Columbus 15, Il; Jacob, 25, In, farmer; Daniel, 24, Il. The Guthrie County History tells us in the biography of William Stroup "In 1868 his mother removed to Leavenworth, Kansas, where she died in December 1871." Clearly she went much earlier or perhaps the Stroup family had moved there with Eliza and then returned for a time to Mercer County. William Stroup and FamilyWilliam Stroup is found next to his father, Daniel, in 1860 in Eliza Township in Mercer County: #2645 William Stroup, 28, farmer, born Ohio; Emily J. Stroup, 26, Ohio; Alice, 6, Il; Charles, 5, Il. We had searched in vain for a marriage record for William and Emily to determine her identity. The Guthrie County, Iowa, history tells us William was married in March, 1851, to Miss Emily Griffith, daughter of Joseph and Mary Griffith. With Emily's surname in hand we found this interesting grouping in 1850 in Goshen Township, Clermont County, Ohio: #1380 Elizabeth Stroup, 28, no occupation, born Ohio; Nancy E. Stroup, 9, Ohio; #1382 Jacob Stroup, 80, no occupation, born Pennsylvania; #1383 Charles McGarvey, 32, born Ohio, with a large family and listed last in their record: Emily J. Griffith, 15, born Ohio. It seems likely this Jacob Stroup is Daniel's father and William's grandfather since Daniel named a son Jacob. It is also likely then that William met Emily Griffith on a visit to his grandfather and indeed the Guthrie County History mentions that William had returned for a time to Ohio and then back to Mercer County. The Clermont County Ohio marriage records are not included in the online Ohio marriage records on Ancestry.com so that explains the absence of a marriage record for William and Emily.Emily died March 6, 1865, age 28 ys 9 mo and 7 dys in Mercer County and is buried in Eliza Creek Cemetery next to her father and her husband. William then married Mary Atterberry 10 April 1866 in Muscatine County, Iowa. He married third to Jane Fyock, daughter of John and Elizabeth Wright Fyock on 1 January 1873 in Muscatine County, Iowa. William died 30 March 1883, age 55 ys, 7 ms, 6 ds. We find children for William and Emily Griffith Stroup in the 1870 census in Eliza Township where William and Mary Atterberry Stroup are enumerated: Mary Alice, born 28 September 1853 and married H. B. Reed Mar 1873, probably in Iowa; Charles Stroup, born abt 1855; A. Meda (Ameda?) Stroup, born about 1864; and Sherman Stroup born about 1865 (probably at Emily�s death). No children are listed for William and Mary. Aaron and Eliza Jane Stroup WatersWe did not find Aaron Waters in the 1850 census in attempting to identify his parents. They did marry in 1854 in Mercer County, however. They moved soon after to Leavenworth County, Kansas, and from the 1860 and 1870 census we have reconstructed this list of children: Thomas Waters, born about 1855, Illinois; Richard Waters, born about 1857, Illinois; Sarah Waters, born about 1858, Il; James Waters, born about 1860, Kansas; Charles Waters, born about 1862, Kan; Willie Waters, born about 1864, Kan; Alice Waters, born abt 1865, Kan; Jane Waters, born about 1866 Kan; Lille Waters, born abt 1869, Kan. |
