News/Obit 1 June 2011  Gladys Ellis Shaw, Stoneboro grad taught 21 years in area rural schools

SANDY LAKE Twp. — Gladys Ellis Shaw, a resident since 1965 of Sandy Lake-New Lebanon Road, Sandy Lake Township, died following an extended illness at 2:50 p.m. Sunday (5-29-11) in Orchard Manor, Pine Township. She had been a resident there since October. She was 97.

Born in Fredonia on Dec. 27, 1913, she was the daughter of Alfred Wilson Ellis and Gertrude Estella Hollibaugh Ellis.

Gladys graduated from the former Stoneboro High School with the Class of 1930, and in 1932 from Slippery Rock University.

She taught for 21 years in rural schools in Mercer and Venango counties, including 14 years in the fifth grade at Victory Joint Consolidated Schools. After teaching 35 years in Pennsylvania, she taught as a substitute in Pennsylvania and Ohio for five years.

For more than 84 years, she was a member of Clarks Mills United Methodist Church, and attended Wayside Community Church, Findley Township, where her stepson, Rev. G. Kenton Shaw, is pastor.

Mrs. Shaw was a member of Sharon Steel Retirees and Sandy Lake Senior Center, as well as the Lucky C.B. Radio Club.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband, who played music and sang at local social gatherings and in some western states.

Her husband, George Enos Shaw (whom she married April 23, 1965) passed away March 3, 1992.

Mrs. Shaw is survived by: seven stepchildren, Rev. G. Kenton Shaw and wife Sonya, Emlenton; Rev. James Shaw and wife Darlene, Nashville; Rev. Thomas Shaw and wife Wanda, Dawsonville, Ga.; Barbara Corbett and husband Kenneth, Nashville; Brian Shaw and wife Bonnie, Stoneboro; Karen McNatt and husband Don, Nashville; and Brenda Milom and husband Michael, Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; three nieces; three nephews; and her friend and helper, Steve Kosnac Sr.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Shaw was preceded in death by two sisters, Violette Haun and Elizabeth Gill.

Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. today (6-1-11) in Cunningham Funeral Homes Inc., 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City.

Funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday (6-2-11) in the funeral home, with the Rev. Jay F. Sterling, pastor of Clarks Mills United Methodist Church, officiating, assisted by Mrs. Shaw's stepson, Rev. G. Kenton Shaw.

Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake.

Gladys Ellis Shaw, a resident since 1965 of Sandy Lake-New Lebanon Road, Sandy Lake Township, passed away after an extended illness at 2:50 p.m. Sunday, May 29, 2011, in Orchard Manor, Pine Township, where she resided since October 2010. She was 97.

Mrs. Shaw was born Dec. 27, 1913, in Fredonia to Alfred Wilson Ellis and Gertrude Estella Hollibaugh Ellis.

Gladys was a graduate of Stoneboro High School Class of 1930, and Slippery Rock University in 1932.

As an educator, she taught 21 years in rural schools in Mercer and Venango counties, including 14 years in the 5th grade at Victory Joint Consolidated Schools. After teaching 35 years in Pennsylvania, she taught as a substitute there and in Ohio for five years.

She was a member of Clarks Mills United Methodist Church for more than 84 years, and also attended Wayside Community Church, Findley Township, where her stepson, the Rev. G. Kenton Shaw was pastor.

Mrs. Shaw was a member of the Sharon Steel Retirees and McQuiston Center by the Park senior center in Sandy Lake as well as the Lucky C.B. (Citizens Band) radio club.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband, George Enos Shaw, whom she married April 23, 1965, while he played and sang at social gatherings locally and in some western states. He died March 3, 1992.

Surviving are: seven stepchildren, the Rev. G. Kenton Shaw and his wife Sonya, Emlenton, Pa.; the Rev. James Shaw and his wife Darlene, Nashville, Tenn.; the Rev. Thomas Shaw and his wife Wanda, Dawsonville, Ga.; Barbara Corbett and her husband Kenneth, Nashville; Brian Shaw and his wife Bonnie, Stoneboro; Karen McNatt and her husband Don, Nashville; and Brenda Milom and her husband Michael, Mount Juliet Tenn.; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

She also is survived by three nieces, three nephews and helper and friend, Steve Kosnac Sr.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Violette Haun and Elizabeth Gill.
