News/Obit | 1 October 1992 | Margaret Van Meter Margaret Van Meter, the former Margaret Bell, died Monday. She was 82 and lived in Newtown Square, Delaware County. Van Meter attended high school in Taos, N.M., and was graduated from Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M. Her late husband was Lt. Col. Donald S. Van Meter, a retired Army officer. Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Van Meter Lang-Ahmed and Ann Van Meter, and two grandsons, Adam and Joseph. Graveside services were to be held this morning at the Great Conewago Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Hunterstown, Adams County. News/Obit* | 8 October 1992 | MARGARET VAN METER, FORMER SCHOOLTEACHER Margaret Bell Van Meter, 82, of Newtown Square, a former teacher and a homemaker, died Sept. 28 at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Middletown Township. Born in Fort Defiance, Ariz., she attended schools in Taos, N.M., and graduated from Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M., with a degree in education. She taught in rural schools in New Mexico for two years and lived in Albuquerque for many years before moving to Newtown Square three years ago. "My mother enjoyed gardening, especially Japanese flower arranging," said a daughter, Margret Ahmed. "My father served with the Army of Occupation in Japan after World War II and they remained friends with some Japanese people," including a gardener who taught Mrs. Van Meter flower arranging. In 1938, Mrs. Van Meter married Lt. Col. Donald S. Van Meter, who became the marshal of the court at the Japanese war crimes trial after World War II. ''My father escorted prisoners to the docket and made announcements in the court, among other duties," Mrs. Ahmed said. "He was a career Army officer who had gone to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point." The Van Meters had been married 46 years when he died in 1984. Mrs. Van Meter is also survived by another daughter, Helga Ann Van Meter, and two grandsons. A graveside service was held last Thursday in Great Conewago Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Hunterstown, Pa. Memorial contributions may be made to the White Horse Village Library, Gradyville Road, Newtown Square, Pa. 19073. Arrangements were made by the Frank C. Videon Funeral Home in Broomall.
