GEORGE MAY, Academia, Juniata county, Pa., was born in Fayette county, October 18, 1834. He is a son of Leonard and Mary (Firestone) May. His grandfather, Michael May, was a native of Virginia, and served under General Washington in the war of the Revolution. From Virginia he removed to Pennsylvania, settling in Somerset County, where he passed the remainder of his life, cultivating his own farm; and there he died, after a long and useful life. He was a Democrat. His son, Leonard May, was born in Somerset county. He received no education, but at an early age began working on his father's farm. He subsequently removed to Connellesville township, Fayette county, where he owned a fine farm, to the cultivation of which he devoted all his later years. His wife, Mary (Firestone) May, was a native of Somerset county, where they were married. The children of this marriage are: Michael, deceased; May, Deceased; James; George; and two who died young. Leonard May was a Democrat. He and his wife both ended their days in Fayette county.

George May received no scholastic training there being no school within eight miles of his home. At the age of seven, he began to work, and passed his boyhood in laboring on his father's farm, and in clearing the land around his home, When he was a young man, he went to Connellsville, and worked with his brother Jacob at boat building, on the banks of the Youghiogeny River for fifteen years. For some time after, he worked as a laborer in Connellsville, and was then employed in the same place as engineer at the brickyard; still later, he was engaged in teaming, in which occupation he received five dollars per day. On March 22, 1887, Mr. May removed to Academia, Juniata County, where he purchased the Andrew Patterson farm, one of the oldest in the Tuscarora valley. Here he began to raise tobacco, in which he has been fairly successful. He has made many improvements on his farm, which comprises about 100 acres. In 1862, while working in the forest, he had the misfortune to cut off three fingers of his right hand. He cut the first tree used in the construction of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and worked on that road until the last nail was driven. His work was appreciated, being intelligently and faithfully performed; and but for his lack of education, Mr. May could have obtained a good position on the road. He has held the office of street commissioner in Connellsville. He adheres to the Democratic Party.

George May was married in 1861, at Connellsville, to Elizabeth, daughter of Moses and Annie (Murphy) Vance, both of Fayette county. Miss Vance was born near Connellsville. Of the ten children of Mr. and Mrs. May, two are dead, Frank and Appolos. Those surviving are: Mary A., at home; Charles and Lewis, twins, the former at home, the latter a farmer in Beale township; Homer, a blacksmith of Academa, Pa.; Edward; Joseph; James; and Daisy, all at home. Mr. May's good judgment leading him to set a true estimate upon the education which he failed to possess, he has been careful that all his children should enjoy its advantages. His excellent character and good sense win the respect and esteem of his associates in business and his general acquaintances. Mr. May attends the Presbyterian Church., Principal=George May2
