SCHEURER DNA PROJECT

This genetic genealogy project for Scheurer ancestry will be open to any person who directly descends or suspects they descend from the Scheurer surname.

This is only for results of Y-DNA tests and is for males only. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA and acquire a new surname by way of marriage, so the tested individual must be a male that wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, or Y-DNA67 marker test. Females who would like to check their direct paternal line can have a male relative with this surname order a Y-DNA test. We are not tracking any mtDNA tests as that follows the maternal line.

The goals are to assemble in a public place a grouped and sorted representation of Scheurer ancestral DNA and associated surname variations for genetic genealogy purposes.

This project is for all male Scheurer descendants. There are many name variations with the oldest and original spelling of the name beimg Scheurer. Common variations are Shirer, Shirar, Sheirer, Shirey, Shearer, Scherry, Sherry, and others. The name shows up in many records with many variations some which are shared with unrelated lines. We must remind you that surnames were not always used and many, including the Scheurer surname, are occupational or trade surnames. From the time they became fashionable or necessary, two people in the same village or area with the same name may not be related. Since this period in history cannot be researched through normal genealogical methods, the DNA testing is the only way to tell if someone is related.

The Scheurer name has been found to mean different things depending on the location and dialect spoken. Generally it is believed that the surname originated in the area of Switzerland and in the dialect of that region, Scheurer means "shearer" and is related to the occupation of raising sheep and then taking their wool. It has been also found to be used by those who work with wool like Weavers and Tailors. Whether these were descendants who naturally evolved their trade into these areas is not know. We do know that many Scheurers were weavers and tailors but also farmers by necessity.

If you think your surname may descend from the Scheurers, please join our group and share your test results.
