Tax Lists for Berks County, Pennsylvania 1770-1789

The Tax Indices for the years 1770 through 1789 were compiled from the original Tax records in the Historical Society of Berks County, Reading Pennsylvania.

Names are listed as they appear in the records, followed by the taxpayers status, the Township, and the year in which the taxes were paid.

After the initial entry, changes in spelling or status are listed only as they occur. Where there is no change indicated, the last previous entry applies.

(S) Single (LT) Lot
(T) Tenant (W) Woman
(L) Laborer (LL) Located Land
(I) Inmate (FO) Gorge Worker
(NR) Non-resident (FP) Furnace Worker
(SO) Soujourner (TL) Tradesman or Laborer
(WI) Widow

Comment: Many tax collectors did not record the status of the individual taxpayers, therefore the "M" (Married) becomes a catch-all for all married persons and other persons whose status the tax collector failed to record. However, it is safe to assume that the majority of the taxpayers listed under "M" were married persons. ed: From my own observation a soujourner is someone who is in the process of moving from one area to another. An inmate is not necessarily a criminal but also an inmate of an asylum, an infirmary, an orphanage, an old folks home, etc.
