Roy survived the Bataan death march and worked for NASA, and now lives on the farm that his father James Lewis had near West Plains, MO (I think it is actually in Oak Mound and there is an Oak Mound Cemetary where a lot of the Gatewoods are buried). (children Mary & Clyde)

See Harrison Repository for details abt this family - they had 14 children. Joseph came to Madison Co AL from Blount Co. TN in 1808. He purchased 200 acres and was on the 1810 tax list. One of the most prominent cotton farmers in the area. Largest # of cotton gins in Limestone Co, AL 10 slaves. He lived between Athens and Huntsville, near the Cambridge Presbyterian Church.


Deed Record Book 2 of Limestone Co. AL, Pages 49-50, Feb 28, 1826. Performance Bond for James Craig, Ruffin Coleman, John Davis, Andrew J. Edmondson, Thomas Martindale, Joseph Harrison and William F. Gamble are held and firmly bound unto Israel Pickens, Governor of the state of Alabama, in the sum of $15,000. The condition of the bond is that James CRAIG has been appointed assessor and tax collector for the county of Limestone for the year 1825. signed by James Craig and Ruffin Coleman. Recorded June 14, 1825. From "Valley Leaves Vol 25, Issue 1 page 30.


Joseph moved to the Huntsville area, Mississippi Territory, AL abt 1808. Joseph is on the Madison Co., AL census records 1809,
Glass is a close neighbor; 1810-1815 (Tax List), 1818-1820 (10 slaves, 1 m-O/21, 5m-U/21, 1m-O/21, 1f-U/21.


Joseph signed bond for James Craig as Deputy Sheriff of Limestone Co., AL, Probate Judge Record Book, Deed Book 2, p. 49 1819-1825.


Jospeh is on the Madison Co., AL Animals taken up-Limestone Co, Al #843 - Living at the Ford of the Meetinghouse Branch on the road leading from Athens to Huntsville, appraised 1828 by Paris Bell and Rich B. Ramsey.


Limestone Co 1819 - John T. Smith's book pg 1-38 missing. Joseph Harrison indexed as to view and mark out road; Joseph Harrison of Mooresville.


He removed to MO bef 1830 (not on AL census in 1830).


Removed from Athens, AL to MO 1829 with brother Jesse & Esther, and son, Harvey & Zilpha Bell Harrison. 2 or 3 Craig familes in same area in MO. possible brothers of Nancy Craig.


Joseph migrated to Lafayette Co. MO in 1829, from Limestone Co. AL; he later moved to Johnson Co. MO.


He is buried in the Harrison cemetery is in Section 21, Warrensburg, Johnson Co. MO. Thomas B. Harrison was the first one buried there in 1844. The land is owned by J. W. Stayer of Kansas City.


In MO - lst land deed in 1829 in Lafeyette Co MO near Jesse & Esther. 1832-1854 land deeds in Hazel Hill Township.
Applied for War of 1812 pension in 1872, Harvey wrote a letter to Washington as witness to fathers service, Joseph was 86 yrs old. Pension was denied due to 57 days service instead of 60 days required, because travel time not allowed.


Judge Harvey Harrison of MO wrote a letter in 1889 about family history.


When Joseph came to AL all the deeds show he paid cash. He was obviously properous. Gideon may not be his father only evidence at this time is Judge Harvey's letter, which in the possession of a relative in Virginia, and I have not seen.

someone joined DAR on ths line. Stated father of Joseph was JOHN of Hawkins Co. TN - from NC Line in Rev War. He had Rec'd land grant from NC. in TN - probably kin - but no evidence John is his father - Joseph named a son Gideon, Gideon, Rev War Soldier, could be father or uncle.

"The cemeteries of the township will be briefly noticed here. The pioneers often buried their relatives on their own farms and this accounts for the scattering of graveyards. Liberty cemetery is in section 24, on the Warrensburg and Fayetteville road and has been a burying place for many years. The Liberty school house stands close by on the south. arrison cemetery is in section 21. Thos. B. Harrison was the first one buried here. It was about 1844. The land is owned by J. W. Stayer of Kansas City. Hobson cemetery is the southeast corner of section 15. Mrs. Elizabeth Brooks was the first person interred. Now there are upwards of one hundred graves......"
