Notes

"Chicago, Sept. 14, 1906. Miss Louise Pecquet du Bellet, Marco, La. I am informed by C. E. A. Marshall, of Shepherdstown, W. V., that you are writing a history of the "Ambler" family, and was told by him that probably you could be of assistance to me (or rather us) in our work in preparing a history of the Bickerdike family, for the two have come together on one or two occasions.
I find from old Virginia records that John Ambler married Elizabeth "Bikadike," both of York, England, and that their son Richard Ambler, of Virginia, acted as executor for the estate of Arthur "Bikadike," his uncle, in 1720, etc., etc. How the descendants of this Richard Ambler came to spell their maternal grandmother's name Burkerdike I have not yet discovered, but think it is due to an error in spelling, as the name "Bikadike" is evidently misspelled in the records; but the latter spelling, it is well known, refers to the name which is now universally spelled Bickerdike, with the exception of one solitary branch from the East Riding, Yorkshire, England, which persist in the old and indifferent spelling-Bickerdyke. This branch is represented in America by the family of the celebrated Civil War nurse, "Mother Bickerdyke," of which only a few remain.
In the United States there are six different Bickerdike families; one in Ireland, two in Canada, and many in England, most of them in Yorkshire. All originally of Yorkshire. There is a Chas. Bickerdike living in Bakersfield, Cal., who belongs to a branch of the family who had an Elizabeth Bickerdike marry a John Ambler May 18, 1682. Also an Arthur Bickerdike, son of Cornelius Bickerdike, who was baptized May 15, 1684. [These from Eng. Parish Registers.] As these names do not appear again in the register I am curious to know if they may not be the same who appear in Virginia shortly after these dates.

If you can throw any light on the subject in hand, and are so disposed, I would be very grateful for any information or suggestions along this line and would be more than pleased to render any assistance, if in my power, to you in your undertaking."
Very respectfully, R. J. Bickerdike." [S2066]

William and Elizabeth Morgan remained in Fauquier county until shortly before his death, when they moved to Lincoln county, Kentucky. There are several records of William buying and selling land in Fauquier county, the last sale in 1797.
That included land granted to his father Charles Morgan in 1824 and 1741.

William's will was dated 29 Apr 1797 and proved on 10 Oct 1797 in Kentucky.
The will is abstracted as follows: "To wife, to son Joseph, to my five children James, William, Joseph, Daniel, and Sally, and my daughter Hannah Bruce's children. To daughters Mary Settle and Elizabeth McCormick, to son Charles, to daughter Phoebe Fishback, to daughter Alice Fishback, to daughter Rosemond Settle, James Withers husband of my daughter Frances Withers."

William Morgan's will proven in Lincoln county Kentucky provides his wife the use of 200 acres of land on Skagg Beaver Creek bought on Swearingen together with slaves: Old George, Lewis, James, Bel, Sarah, Summerset, Young Daniel, and George with their increase and also two serviceable horses, one large waggon and gear, four chairs, one feather bed, and furniture. Also one forth part of all cattle, sheep, and hogs and the same part of all the household and kitchen furniture, carpenter tools, plantations tools, nailes, locks, hinges and steel. At her decease, 200 acres, old George, and any improvements on the land would go to his son Joseph with the remainder being divided six ways between his children James, William, Joseph, Daniel, Salley and the daughter of his daughter Hannah Bruce. Other items were given individually to the children. Slaves Harry, Beth, and her children were to be sold and the money divided six ways among various heirs.
