Robert BISHOPP

ABT 1640 - ABT 1677

ID Number: I10749

  • RESIDENCE: Old Rappahannock and 1638 To James City, VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1640
  • DEATH: ABT 1677, Old Rappanock, VA
  • RESOURCES: See: Notes [S324] [S979] [S2101]
Father: Cyprian BISHOPP "the Immigrant"

Family 1 : Mary
  1.  Robert BISHOPP Jr.

Notes

"Robert Bishop’s Will is not the Will of a grandfather. It is not even the Will of a married man or a man who has children. It mentions no wife or children (or grandchildren). It is the Will of a younger unmarried man in my opinion. Someone who is more of a contemporary to John Gregory, Jr., the named beneficiary of the 480 acres of land in his Will.

"On 21 April 1676 Robert Bishop of the Parish of Farnham, County of Rappahannock, VA wrote his Will, proved on 6 June 1677 in which is does not mention a wife or child. He mentions land, which he bought from Henry Newberry (Awbury) which he devised to John Gregory, Jr. He also appoints John Gregory, Jr. as executor. His witnesses were Thomas Wheeler, John Garner (Games?) and John Burnett. He also wrote a codicil to the will dated 24 May 1676 (same witnesses) in which he mentions his brother-in-law John Jones, presumably his nephew John Jones, Jr. (“when he comes of age”) and “John Gregory’s pen.”
Note: Since there is no evidence that this Robert Bishop was married, I assume that his sister married John Jones.

On 18 Feb. 1673/74 John Pigg and Thomas Hall received a land patent in New Kent Co., VA (Patent Book 6, page 502). One of the headrights was Robert Bishoppe.

On 3 September 1669 Henry Awberry received a land patent of 480 acres in Rappahannock Co., VA, joining the land of Awberry, Posrahian (Piscataway ?) Creek (Patent Book 6, page 245). This may or may not be the 480 acres involved in the Robert Bishop and John Gregory, Jr., Wills. This 480 acres was patented to James Taylor on 21 Oct. 1687. (Patent Book 7, Page 596)."

"James Taylor of New Kent County 10/21/1687 744 acres Rappahanock County Virginia Land Patents, Book 7, p. 625: South side of the Rappahanock River, 480 acres granted to Mr. Henry Abery, who sold to Mr. Robert Bishopp, who bequeathed to John Gregory, who gave to his sister Mary, now wife of said James Taylor; said land in danger of being lost was petitioned for by said Taylor the 1st day of the last Genrll. Court -04/15/1687 and granted by the Gov'r; beg. by the Indian Path alias Mr. Abrey's path, to fork of Gregory's Creek, on Richard Gregory's lyne, in sight of John Gatewood's plantation, to the Rowleing Roade. 246 acres for the transport of 5 persons: James Taylor, Hanna Martin, Robert Jones, Ursula Collis, Hanna Collier."

LDS X8KW-NF Shows Robert Bishopp as father of Elizabeth. He d. aft 21 apr 1676, Old Rappahannock, VA.; wife unk - one son listed Robert Bishopp with no details.
