He married Mary, daughter of George Thornton and his wife Mildred Gregory, whose mother Mildred, was a sister of Augustine Washington, and Aunt of General George Washington.

Gen. William Woodford of Caroline County.Lived at Edmundsbury. Law office at Bowling Green. Some relatives moved to Kentucky. Fought in many revolutionary battles, ranging from New York to Charleston.

William Woodford was a nobel gentleman raised on the estate called "Windsor". His father had been one of the Knights of the Gloden Horseshoe (a party led by Governor Spotswood to explore the land to the Blue Ridge mountains and down the west side to the Shenandoah valley).

William was a good friend of George Washington and had fought with him in the French and Indian War. At the beginning of the Revolution, he was a colonel and in command of the Second Regiment. The British royal governor, Dunmore, and his troops fled Williamsburg and went to an area of Norfolk to await British reinforcements who would be coming by sea. The fort that Dunmore was in was called Great Bridge. Woodford and his men defeated Dunmore at the Battle of Great Bridge.

Later, at the Battle of Brandywine, in 1777, Woodford was wounded. He recovered and returned to combat only to be captured at the siege of Charleston. He was sent by ship to a British prison in New York where he died in 1780.

There is a lot of information on him in the book by T. E. Campbell titled "Colonian Caroline A History of Caroline County, Virginia" published by the Dietz Press, Inc., Richmond, VA.
